Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has received an official release date in theaters — Dec. 5, 2025.
The move was among a handful of key additions and changes Universal and prolific partner Blumhouse made to their 2025 theatrical calendar, including pushing back the release of M3GAN 2.0 by a month, from May 16 to June 27.
Previously, The Black Phone 2 was set to open on June 27, 2025. It will now go out months later on Oct. 17, 2025.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel wasn’t the only pic getting a release date for the first time.
Blumhouse’s original horror-thriller The Woman in the Yard will open on March 28 of next year, followed quickly by Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse’s thriller Drop on April 22.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Update: At CinemaCon, Universal confirmed they’ll be releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in Fall 2025.
The original article follows:
The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So of course they’re developing a sequel, even if one hasn’t been officially announced yet. Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson already said back in January that they were “nailing down the story” and hoping to get into production as soon as possible. Now Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has shared a picture that was taken at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company that provided the...

We've got a huge and exciting news announcement to make fresh out of CinemaCon 2024, the highly-anticipated sequel to "Five Nights at Freddy's" will be heading to theaters in 2025. /Film's own Ryan Scott was in attendance when Universal made the announcement, a shocker to absolutely no one considering Blumhouse and Universal were fast-tracking a sequel to Emma Tammi's film adaptation of Scott Cawthon's impossibly popular video game franchise of the same name before the animatronic murder machines had a chance to recharge.
The decision was a result of the film's astronomically huge success at the box office, outperforming every other horror release of 2023, including Blumhouse and Universal's massive legacy film, "The Exorcist: Believer." What's even wilder is that "FNaF" went day-and-date with a streaming release on Peacock, meaning audiences had the opportunity to stay at home and scare themselves silly without having to dig into their pockets for tickets,...

Is it time for six nights at Freddy’s? A sequel to horror hit Five Nights at Freddy‘s is in the works, Universal revealed at CinemaCon Wednesday.
The first film was a surprise sensation that weathered poor reviews and a day-and-date release on Peacock to land Blumhouse’s top opening of all time with $78 million. The feature from director Emma Tammi was based on the video game and counted creator Scott Cawthon as its screenwriter. It centered on a security guard played by Josh Hutcherson, who took a job at a pizzeria with murderous animatronic animals.
Tammi previously told The Hollywood Reporter of a potential sequel: “We have some loose ends that I think are going to have to come back in a sequel to be tied up.”

Turn on the security cameras, because Freddy Fazbear is on the loose again. “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” one of 2023’s most unexpected box-office sensation, is getting a sequel from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse.
Jim Orr, Universal Pictures President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, announced the news on Wednesday, during the company’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. No other news about the film — such as a release window, creative team, or cast — was unveiled.
The announcement comes six months after “Five Nights at Freddy’s” became a hit at the October box office, where it grossed $297.2 million on a mere $20 million budget. A sequel film was probably greenlit by Act 3 of the first one.
The success of the film, an adaptation of the viral indie horror video game franchise by Scott Cawthon, was especially impressive given Universal’s decision to release it simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service Peacock. The...

Based on the insanely popular video game of the same name, Five Nights at Freddy’s was an incredible movie despite not being revered by the critics. The movie went on to become an incredible success at the box office even while film critics brutally chewed it out for being a baffling pot of shallow plot and no real entertainment.
Five Nights at Freddy’s
While fans would rather laugh at those critical reviews, there was a common ground that both fans and critics agreed upon: the movie’s lack of real jumpscares and its excessive focus on trauma. And so since the sequel is in the works, it is being reported that the second part will focus more on quality jump scares and horror elements.

From its modest beginnings as a railroad link to Los Angeles, CA and Salt Lake City, Ut in 1905 to its mob-led urbanization in the 1930s as a gambling mecca (and later a family-friendly mega resort with the arrival of Howard Hughes in the 1960s), Las Vegas, Nevada has long served as a draw to those with an entrepreneurial spirit and a keen sense of showmanship. It’s an established fact that popular video games rarely make good movies, and so it proves with Five Nights at Freddy’s. Produced by Blumhouse and co-written by game creator Scott Cawthorn, the film should have been a fun little scarefest packed with creepy suspense moments, but instead it’s a drab disappointment thanks to a dismal and messy script that fails to capitalise on the game’s core appeal.

"Five Nights at Freddy's" is getting a sequel. As expected, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse are wasting no time in getting a sequel to last year's hit video game adaptation going. While the studio has yet to make a formal announcement, star Josh Hutcherson recently revealed that a follow-up to the horror flick is in the works as we speak, and it sounds very much like the brass wants to get the ball moving sooner rather than later.

From Stu Macher in Scream to Shaggy in Scooby-Doo, Matthew Lillard is no stranger to iconic roles — but the fervent fanbase that accompanied his casting as William Afton in Five Nights at Freddy’s came as a surprise. Emma Tammi's new horror film "Five Nights at Freddy's," based on the popular line of video games, is one of the more impressive success stories of the year. The film is about a somnambulistic night watchman named Mike (Josh Hutcherson) who takes a gig watching a disused children's pizzeria, closed since the late 1980s. The pizzeria, called Freddy Fazbear's, is outfitted with an animatronic band of anthropomorphic animals like one might have seen as Showbiz Pizza back in the day. Perhaps predictably, the animatronic animals spring to life at night and slay any ne'er-do-wells in the pizzeria. The film, rated PG-13, doesn't lean into gore and mayhem, sadly, but it does contain numerous references to the original games as well as several cameos from popular YouTubers whose online commentary made the "FNaF" games popular back in mid-'10s.

Not that it wasn't already clear, but "Five Nights at Freddy's" has become a ridiculously big success story for both Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions. To further fuel that fire, with the money the video game adaptation pulled in over the weekend, it has officially crossed the $300 million mark at the global box office. All of this happening while "Five Nights at Freddy's" has been readily available to stream on Peacock at no additional cost to subscribers. A remarkable feat, to be certain.
"Freddy's" made $400,000 in its sixth frame domestically, per The Numbers. That now puts its running total at $136.9 million domestically and $163.4 million internationally for a grand total of $300.3 million. The film is certainly running out of gas and it probably won't add too much more to its total from here on out, though it still has a release in Japan set for February. Either way, this is a home run for all involved.

In the realm of horror and suspense, Blumhouse Productions has struck gold with its latest release, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (Fnaf). The movie, adapted from a popular video game, has now become the studio’s highest-grossing film in its 23-year history. Surpassing the record previously held by M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” Fnaf has earned an impressive $295.5 million globally.
The film’s success is a testament to the captivating storytelling and the effective blending of horror elements that have appealed to a wide audience. The movie opened at No. 1 on October 27, pulling in a record-breaking $80 million domestically. This marked the biggest horror opening of 2023 and the second-best opening ever for a video game movie.

It was a very crowded holiday weekend at the box office, with Disney's "Wish" and director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" taking the lion's share of attention, while Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" ended up topping the charts for a second weekend in a row in a surprise upset. While all of that was going on, Blumhouse's smash horror hit "Five Nights at Freddy's" quietly became the studio's biggest hit ever. Yes, as hard as it may be to believe, the video game adaptation now stands alone as the biggest of big hits from a studio that has delivered a great many hits over the last decade.

Blumhouse Productions has been one of the biggest names in horror for several years now, putting out movies like The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises, among many others. October 6th saw the theatrical release of their Exorcist sequel The Exorcist: Believer, which is meant to be the first entry in a trilogy… and the poor reception that movie got from movie-goers and critics alike wasn’t exactly what Universal and Peacock were hoping for when they forked over around $400 million for the rights to distribute that trilogy. But Blumhouse’s luck turned around three weeks later. That’s when their video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) reached theatres – and that movie has officially become their highest-grossing production!

Made on a production budget of just $20 million, Five Nights at Freddy’s is proving to be a big time moneymaker for the studio,...

Spoilers for "Five Nights at Freddy's" follow.
The old Hollywood adage, "Pain is temporary, film is forever," is normally reserved for the on-set hardships endured while filming swords-and-sandals epics like "Gladiator" or the sprawling "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Now, it seems that turn of phrase could also apply to this year's highest-grossing horror film, "Five Nights at Freddy's."
Based on the immensely popular video game series created by Scott Cawthon, "FNaF" (for short) became an online phenomenon mostly due to viral videos of YouTube influencers playing the liminal horror game that's carefully designed to produce as many jump scares as humanly possible. Set in the fictional kids restaurant Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, "FNaF" harkens back to a time when full-size animatronic bands like Showbiz Pizza's Rock-afire Explosion entertained (and slightly terrified) children of all ages.
To recreate the baked-in tactile terror of these supposedly amiable monstrosities, "Five Nights at Freddy's...

While several big-budget movies have experienced quite a bit of trouble at the box office both this year and since the pandemic first started in general, one genre continues to stay afloat consistently: horror. And when such movies are geared toward younger audiences and inspired by source material with a rabid fanbase to begin with? Well, that's when you know you probably have a hit on your hands.
That's exactly what happened with "Five Nights at Freddy's," the movie based on the cult video game franchise that promptly smashed box office records the weekend of its release. Not even a thorough critical lashing could stop this runaway hit in its tracks, adding another appropriately irreverent layer to a phenomenon that's likely to become a gateway film for young horror fans everywhere. But in an interesting wrinkle, "Five Nights at Freddy's" opted for a hybrid release both in theaters and on...

In Emma Tammi's new horror film "Five Nights at Freddy's," based on the popular video game series, a night watchman (Josh Hutcherson) is stalked through a disused, 1980s pizza restaurant/arcade called Freddy Fazbear's by the restaurant's animatronic animal band. By the all-too-complex mythology of the film, taken from the games, the animatronics have been brought to life by the souls of missing children, kidnapped and murdered by an evil stalker in a yellow bunny costume. It's best not to delve too deeply into the "FNaF" canon, as it gets very complicated very quickly. Focus on the fact that people are being stalked and killed by robotic Chuck E. Cheese-style pizza mascots, and you'll be on surer footing.
The Freddy Fazbear's band consists of the bear Freddy (Kevin Foster), the chicken Chica (Jessica Weiss), the red fox Foxy (voiced by Kellen Goff), and the blue rabbit Bonnie (Jade Kindar-Martin). Kindar-Martin,...

"Five Nights At Freddy's" is a global phenomenon. There is a reason why this particular video game franchise, created by Scott Cawthon, still inspires endless "Let's Play" videos on YouTube, while its expanding lore is subjected to dedicated scrutiny and theory-crafting. So, when a Blumhouse-produced "Fnaf" movie was first announced, fans were over the moon, and for good reason. For one, director Emma Tammi chose to adapt a property that is a treasure trove for eccentric horror storylines that would not only translate well onto the big screen, but would also double as the perfect getaway to horror for younger audiences invested in "Fnaf" to various degrees.
Despite some fandom misgivings about whether the film would be able to successfully capture the essence of everything that makes "Fnaf" so unique, "Five Nights At Freddy's" managed to get almost everything right. The film wastes no time setting up its intriguing premise...

Matthew Lillard is in his Renaissance era.
His latest film, Five Nights at Freddy’s, is smashing box office and streaming records, he has a new improv show premiering on Amazon’s Freevee next week, his Quest’s End whiskey sold out its first drop, and he runs a luxury gaming company, Beadle & Grimm’s, with four of his close friends.
“This is a really lovely little comeback moment for me,” Lillard tells The Hollywood Reporter, before reconsidering that sentiment. “I sort of want to quote LL [Cool J], ‘Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years.'”
Lillard is no stranger to a successful franchise, of course, having starred in Scream and Scooby-Doo — but the overwhelming success of the film adaptation of a popular video game about a haunted restaurant called Freddy Fazbear’s isn’t lost on him.

It's no surprise that Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria struggled with repeat customers, especially after the Bite of '87. It's also no surprise that "Five Nights at Freddy's," the movie adaptation of the original horror game by Scott Cawthon, has dropped sharply in its second weekend at the box office, despite a lack of fresh competition.
Variety reports that "Five Nights at Freddy's" is on track to gross $17.8 million this weekend, a drop of 78% from its monstrous $80 million opening last week -- which was the third-biggest debut for a horror movie of all time, behind only "It" and "It: Chapter Two." As huge as this drop is (50-60% is more typical for a second weekend), it's neither a great shock nor something that the studio is likely to worry about. In fact, NBCUniversal almost certainly anticipated this when the decision was made to give "Five Nights at Freddy's" a day-and-date release on its struggling streaming service,...

Today, Universal/Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy‘s is clocking past the $100M domestic mark, a box office milestone for the studio when it comes to its experimental theatrical day-and-date releases on its Peacock streaming service.
That’s not only the highest that Uni has seen from a pic that’s been distributed via such means at the box office, but it’s also per the conglom the most viewed movie or series ever for the Ott paid service in its first five days, outstripping the debuts of Halloween Ends, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Bel-Air and The Best Man: The Final Chapters.
Among those day-and-date theatrical releases which played simultaneously on streaming services, Freddy‘s crosses the $100M mark in eight days, the second-fastest type of dynamic release to do so after Marvel Studios’ Black Widow which did it in six days while streaming on Disney+ back in...

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a movie directed by Emma Tammi starring Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio, and Elizabeth Lail. Based on a video-game by Scott Cawthon.
As we can see in “Five Nights at Freddy’s”, there are options for everyone, and the combination of genres offers, although it may not always seem like it, almost infinite combinations that never cease to surprise us. This time we have come across this horror movie which, based on its script, should have been a blood-soaked slasher but turned out to be a “family-friendly” film that, to be honest, won’t be the go-to choice for any avid fan of raw cinema.
However, cinematically speaking, it is very well-crafted and showcases impressive shots, atmosphere, and framing.
Five Nights at Freddy’s Plot
A boy who suffers from insomnia and is responsible for his sister has to take care of an old pizzeria that is already closed.

The bold decision to release Five Nights at Freddy’s in theaters and on Peacock on the very same day is paying off big time for Universal and Blumhouse, as the gateway horror movie is performing extremely well on both fronts. In the wake of smashing box office records and passing $135 million in theaters, Five Nights is also breaking records for Peacock.

In another example of how streaming success doesn’t have to come at the expense of box office glory, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is Peacock’s most-watched film or television show within the first five days of availability, according to the streamer. While no raw viewership numbers have been offered up, whatever milestone the Blumhouse horror movie achieved came alongside a sky-high $80 million domestic and $133 million global opening weekend.

Five Nights at Freddy’s filmmaker Emma Tammi has now set the opening weekend record of $80 million for a Blumhouse film, and she’s keenly aware that her journey to this point was an unlikely one.
Tammi started out as a documentary filmmaker, tackling such subjects as endurance running in Fair Chase (2014) and the 2016 Presidential Election in the Jason Blum-produced Election Day: Lens Across America (2017). From there, the producers of Fair Chase approached her about the supernatural horror film, The Wind (2018), after seeing the way she and co-director Alex Cullen captured New Mexico in their doc. They wanted Tammi to bring those same instincts to The Wind’s own New Mexico backdrop amidst the Old West.
The Wind ended up being well received, which signaled to Blum that Tammi could also be a viable genre director. He eventually thought of her for the long-in-development...

Some of those have included fun houses, and others include creepy animatronic kid’s entertainment. In an era of complicated first-person shooters, detailed world-building, and dueling consoles, one of the internet’s most popular games built a gaming fandom with a simple point-and-click.

There's an endless debate between film fans on what it is exactly that makes a film "camp." For some, it's a shorthand to mean "so bad, it's good," while others (like myself) view it as a sacred form of presentation. Camp films are often exaggerated to the point of absurdity, tiptoeing the line of the uncanny, and with a sense of humor that is either unintentionally brilliant or delivered with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Of my 15 favorite movies of all time, more than half of the titles could be argued as camp classics. While there are plenty of universally understood camp films, the intentional lack of a formal metric means that a film's camp status will change from viewer to viewer, determined by vibes and a "you know it when you see it" attitude.
My first camp film was Tim Burton's oft-maligned alien comedy,...

It’s been a long journey to the big screen for the popular video game franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s, and fans of the game damn sure showed up to support the killer animatronics.
Universal and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s movie had a Massive opening weekend, scaring up $78 million and topping the box office here in the United States.
Worldwide, the film opened to $130.5 million in its debut weekend!
What’s particularly impressive about this massive debut is that Five Nights at Freddy’s was also released on Peacock the same day it hit theaters, shattering the notion that day-and-date releases are bad for the box office. Even with the film available at a low cost at home – Peacock starts at just $5.99 per month – audiences turned out in droves to see it in theaters.
But just how incredible is that $130.5 million opening? Well, it’s Blumhouse’s best worldwide debut of all time,...

This post contains spoilers for "Five Nights at Freddy's."
Matthew Lillard is a horror legend and we don't say it enough. We know him and we love him from films like "She's All That," "Slc Punk," "Without a Paddle" ... any "Love's Labour's Lost" fans out there? But the man got his start in horror and his irrepressible comic spirit and fearless willingness to switch to pitch-black menace on a dime have made him an extremely effective and underrated horror star, as you can see in films like "Scream," "Scooby Doo," and "Thirteen Ghosts."
Lillard has just added another glinting badge to his vest in the form of "Five Nights at Freddy's." We meet him as Steve Raglan, the career counselor that our hero, Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), is sent to after he beats up a dad in front of his son while on the job. Mike is a man of few words,...

Once upon a time, the Halloween box office belonged to Freddy Krueger. Now it belongs to Freddy Fazbear as Universal/Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is on pace to set a new studio record for Blumhouse with a $78 million opening.
If that figure holds, it will pass the previous Blumhouse record of $76.2 million set in 2018 by the revival of “Halloween.” Even if Saturday and Sunday numbers slip, it is set to more than double the record for the highest weekend total posted by a film on Halloween weekend, a record that previously belonged to “Saw III” with $33 million in 2006.
The adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s indie horror video game series also passed the record for the highest opening weekend set by a film released simultaneously on home platforms, topping the $49 million opening of fellow Blumhouse film “Halloween Kills” in 2021. Like that film, “Five Nights” was released day-and-date on Peacock,...
