Tuesday night on “The Voice,” Kelly Clarkson suffered a blow to her team when Gymani was eliminated in the Top 11. However, a majority of viewers think the instant save voters got it wrong and that Jim & Sasha Allen of Team Ariana Grande should have been cut instead. The father-son folk duo from Connecticut earned a leading 61% in our overnight poll asking who deserved to go home, compared to only 9% for Gymani. Here are the complete poll results:
61% — Jim & Sasha Allen
9% — Gymani
7% — Lana Scott
6% — Joshua Vacanti
6% — Jeremy Rosado
4% — Holly Forbes
Less than 3% — Wendy Moten, Girl Named Tom, Hailey Mia, Paris Winningham, Jershika Maple

With Monday’s episode, Season 21 of The Voice went live, teeing up make-or-break performances by the Top 20 — though I expected a Top 21, to be honest. After last week’s reveal that viewers could vote for a coach-picked contestant to return to the competition — either Team Ariana Grande’s Vaughn Mugol, Team Blake Shelton’s Hailey Green, Team Kelly Clarkson’s Aaron Hines or Team John Legend’s Samara Brown — I thought extra space would be made for a comeback kid. Not yet, apparently. (Tuesday, during the Wild Card Instant Save.) Keep reading, though, and we’ll discuss all of Monday’s performances.

As it loves to do, The Voice threw us a curveball Monday, revealing in its final moments that coaches Blake Shelton, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Ariana Grande had each been allowed to nominate an artist who’d been eliminated during the Battles or Knockouts to make a comeback during the live shows. Which one of them would get to return? That, as you might have suspected, would be up to viewers. (To vote, tweet #VoiceComeback and your chosen artist’s first name.)

Over and over again, Monday’s episode of The Voice teed up the saddest kind of mic-drop moment — the kind in which a singer’s asked to drop the mic on their way not just off the stage but the show. Along the way, Ariana Grande got goosebumps galore, John Legend retained a purple-haired competitor who reminded him of Pink, Kelly Clarkson stole a 13-year-old dark horse from Ari, and Blake Shelton was left so awestruck by a performance, he remarked, “I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anything like that.” Spoiler alert: It’s the first one up.

Night 2 of “The Voice” battles aired on Tuesday night with the four coaches getting some much-needed help from superstar advisors Camila Cabello (Team John Legend), Kristin Chenoweth (Team Ariana Grande), Dierks Bentley (Team Blake Shelton) and Jason Aldean (Team Kelly Clarkson). The episode began with Jershika Maple choosing her new team, as both John and Ariana had pushed their “steal” buttons after Kelly let her go on Monday night. So which team did Jershika join? “The Voice” entered the next stage of the competition, the battles, during Monday’s all-new episode. Per tradition, each coach brought along a superstar advisor to help mentor their aspiring artists. They were: Jason Aldean for Team Kelly Clarkson, Camila Cabello for Team John Legend, Kristin Chenoweth for Team Ariana Grande and Dierks Bentley for Team Blake Shelton. In this round, the coaches choose the pairings and the songs, and they also name the winner of each battle. The losing artist can then be “stolen” by a rival coach or “saved” by their own coach. So how did the first set of battles play out?

The blind auditions of the 21st season of “The Voice” came to a close last week with a whopping seven four-chair turns from coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and first timer Ariana Grande. Kelly was queen of the dais, nabbing four of those artists, while Blake claimed two, John one and Ariana couldn’t bring any to her team.
The first artist to perform for the judges this season was Girl Named Tom, a trio of siblings that wowed the coaches with their harmonizing on “Helplessly Hoping.” At the time we didn’t know that season 21’s blinds would be dominated by groups (a total of five made the show), and yet somehow Girl Named Tom remained the strongest of the bunch and one of the best auditions overall.

As The Voice’s Season 21 Blind Auditions came to a close Tuesday evening, the NBC sing-off teed up performances by a John Legend fan who, despite his admiration for the Egot winner, chose Kelly Clarkson to be his coach; a rocker whose Train cover made Blake Shelton hear the Black Crowes; a trio of sisters who made Ariana Grande do a triple take; and an R&b powerhouse who was likened to a Bruno Mars/Beyonce combo platter. And if you read on, we’ll discuss all of their performances and more…
