The colossal creatures from the world of King Kong could be coming to the small screen, as a King Kong Skull Island TV series is in the works, and although it has a nearly identical name to the recent feature film Kong: Skull Island, it bears no connection to the new movie from Legendary and Warner Bros.
According to ScreenDaily, the King Kong Skull Island TV series is a collaboration between MarVista Entertainment and Im Global Television, with Jonathan Penner and Stacy Title (the husband / wife duo who teamed up for The Bye Bye Man film based on a story by Robert Damon Schneck, with Penner writing and Title directing the horror film) on board as executive producers and writers for the series, which is described as a "serialised, contemporary continuation of Cooper’s classic 1933 monster film to feature a female-led, multicultural ensemble." MaryAnn’s quick take… One of the most inept films I’ve ever seen. Cheaply made, poorly directed, badly acted, oddly edited, and ultimately insultingly stupid. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of most mainstream horror movies
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
So, three university students in Madison, Wisconsin, rent an absurdly large and ridiculously rambling off-campus house. Inside is a haunted night table — that’s right, I said “haunted night table” — that summons the most feeble boogeyman horror movies have ever seen. He’s called the Bye Bye Man, and he’s like Slender Man without the catchy memes. He drops coins on the floor, makes you hear the sound of a train in the distance, scratches up your walls, and — this is the eeriest bit of all — he makes...

A horror movie slated to open in October means buzz and solid expectations. It used to be you rarely saw the genre at any other time — back before studios discovered how cheap they were to produce and how palatable they were to teens looking for something to do on a Friday night whether it proved enjoyably worthwhile or not. Securing this coveted spot was therefore a win for Stx Entertainment and their film The Bye Bye Man, either through hard work or sheer luck. Watching it shift up from October 14th, 2016 to June 3rd may have even been a testament to its success until yet another shuffle to January 13th, 2017. Don’t let the connotations Friday the 13th conjures fool you. The Bye Bye Man was dumped.

If someone got drunk, read the Wikipedia entry for “It Follows” and decided over the next morning’s hangover to write a screenplay, “The Bye Bye Man” might be the result. In reality, this horror film is based on a “strange-but-true” story by Robert Damon Schneck, but it lacks any of the terror or the details that cause the best ghost stories and urban legends to haunt us.

Don’t think it. Easy enough, no one seems to have thought about much here. Don’t say it. Don’t worry, I won’t be recommending this one. Don’t watch it! That’s just my warning to you. Welcome to the desolate cinematic wasteland of January, my weathered friends.
The Bye Bye Man is an unfathomably inept horror film; one that’s an obvious byproduct of The Babadook/It Follows brand of horror success. It is, without apology, one of the emptiest, nonsensical haunted thrillers ever to fail genre audiences. “So bad it’s good” would be a tremendous improvement in quality, as you’ll end up laughing for spells simply out of maddening boredom. Nothing is funny, just disjoined, utterly senseless and cataclysmically misguided – we’re talking every single aspect. I mean, you can’t fault a team for attempting something new and iconic in horror. You...

This year may very well be one of the best for the horror genre in recent memory. In 2016 alone, we had The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, The Blair Witch, Don’t Breathe, and 10 Cloverfield Lane. Okay, admittedly the last two aren’t technically horror films (they may be more low-key thrillers), but seeing as they were heavily advertised as such, I don’t think it’s unfair to lump them into the category. This steady stream of decent horror flicks has definitely done a lot to help me become more open to the genre, which I’d never been too crazy about due to its tired jump-scare tropes.
Hollywood seems to have figured out that in order to truly excel in horror, the focus needs to be on the creepy idea more than snazzy filmmaking and audio design techniques. Does this mean that every film will be a home run?...

“Don’t think it. Don’t say it.” Hitting theaters this winter is The Bye Bye Man, a new film from Stx Entertainment that features a killer who can really get into your head. In anticipation of the movie’s premiere, TarcherPerigee has just re-released the book the film is based on, Robert Damon Schneck’s The Bye Bye Man: And Other Strange-But-True Tales (formerly published as The President’s Vampire), and we have an excerpt for Daily Dead readers to enjoy.
Synopsis: “The True Story behind the Terrifying Movie
Don’t think of his name…
In 1990, three college students spent a long Wisconsin winter experimenting with a Ouija board; it turned out to be the deadliest mistake of their lives.
The board brought them into contact with a psychic serial killer, known only as the Bye Bye Man. Learning his name makes you vulnerable, but thinking about it...

Earlier today I posted the trailer for Evolution, a new horror film from French director Lucile Hadzihalilovic that's shaping up to be one of the most intriguing genre imports of the year. The evocative spot manages to draw us in completely while giving away very little of the plot -- an art that's been all but lost in the business of Hollywood marketing, which regularly advertises films as if they were cars, sacrificing any semblance of mystery as they cover every gleaming inch of the product being peddled. Case in point: the "teaser" for The Bye Bye Man, a new horror film that looks sort of like A Nightmare on Elm Street meets Final Destination meets Sinister, with all the genre box-checking that description implies. I'm all for "original" ideas in horror, but this one doesn't inspire much hope thanks to a subtlety-free first look that should just call itself what it is: a trailer.
