Remi Wolf is feeling the funk — both musically and emotionally — in the music video for her latest single “Cinderella,” an offering from her forthcoming sophomore studio album Big Ideas, out July 12.
“‘Cinderella’ is a lyrical collage of the ups and downs and mood swings and transient lifestyle I was experiencing while writing this album,” Wolf shared in a statement. “Constant travel and rapid changes led me to feel such a rollercoaster of emotion- moving from feeling really insecure to feeling really good to feeling manic and depressed and then feeling Ok again,...

Feist stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday to perform “Hiding Out In the Open,” a cut from her new album Multitudes. Watch her appearance on the show below.
Taking over the late night stage with a four-piece backing band, Feist sounded just as good — if not better — than the studio recording of “Hiding Out In the Open,” an acoustic ballad that attempts to navigate the baggage that’s brought into a romantic relationship: “Maybe he’s gonna let me down/ Love is not a thing you try to do/ It wants to be the thing compelling you,” goes some of the track’s standout lines. Although the stage backdrop emulated the seemingly-infinite images of the Multitudes album cover, the one real Feist was the true focus. Check it out below.

Ethan Hawke and Maya Hawke are just a couple of over 20 musicians who’ve contributed to Light in the Attic & Friends, a covers compilation that’ll be released for Record Store Day’s annual Black Friday event. As a preview, the father-daughter actor duo have shared their rendition of Willie Nelson’s “We Don’t Run,” featuring production from Christian Lee Hutson and mixing by Jay Som’s Melina Duterte.
Considering the delicate indie folk Maya releases on her own, it’s not too much of a surprise that Nelson’s classic outlaw country would be a staple of the Hawke household while she was growing up: “This song is off Willie’s brilliant album Spirit, which has been a mainstay in our home since it was released in 1996,” Ethan said in a statement. “Everybody needs a good anthem song. This is one of the best.”

The Strokes invited Regina Spektor on-stage for a rare rendition of their 2004 collaboration “Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men” at Queens, New York’s Forest Hills Stadium on Saturday.
The reunion was not only notable for its meeting of two cherished hometown acts, but also the live revival of the duet that first appeared as a b-side on the 2004 “Reptilia” single. The Strokes and Spektor last performed the song in-concert at New York’s The Theater at Madison Square Garden in 2003.
“It only took 20 years but look who showed up,” The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas teased as Spektor stepped up to the mic. “They love you, kid.”
Spektor answered the crowd’s uproarious approval by shouting, “My favorite band in my favorite city!” Then, gauging their palpable anticipation, Casablancas added, “Y’all know the song” before diving in. Watch the homecoming performance of “Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men” below.

It looks like Alan Palomo has shed his Neon Indian moniker for the foreseeable future: The electro-pop musician has announced World of Hassle, his debut album under his real name. Ahead of the LP’s September 15th release via Mom+Pop, Palomo has shared its latest single “Stay-at-Home DJ.” He’ll celebrate with a North American tour throughout Fall 2023.
World of Hassle first manifested as the next Neon Indian record following 2015’s Vega Intl. Night School, but naturally, things changed once the height of the pandemic hit; that album concept and the Neon Indian moniker both began to feel a bit restricting, so Palomo dropped them both.
But longtime fans can still expect a pretty familiar sound from World of Hassle. It combines elements of vaporwave, rock, and cumbia, which backdrop his biting, politically-charged lyrics. Like your favorite black comedy, Palomo wraps his dead-serious topics with a playful exterior. Pre-orders for physical copies are ongoing.

Dee Snider was recently dropped as a performer at the upcoming San Francisco Pride Parade & Celebration after he showed support for a controversial statement made by Kiss’ Paul Stanley about sex reassignment treatment for children. Now, the Twisted Sister frontman has issued a response, citing his long history of support for the Lgbtqia+ community.
After Stanley stated that “normalizing” sex reassignment for children has “turned it into a sad and dangerous fad,” Snider chimed in, “You know what? There was a time where I ‘felt pretty’ too. Glad my parents didn’t jump to any rash conclusions! Well said, @PaulStanleyLive.”
While San Francisco Pride did acknowledge that “Dee has always been a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights,” the organization pointed out that it was “heartbroken and angry” when the singer “expressed support for Kiss’s Paul Stanley’s transphobic statement.”
In a Facebook post on Friday (May 5th) titled, “So I Hear I’m Transphobic.

Alan Palomo of Neon Indian and Mac DeMarco have teamed up for a new coastal, chill bop, “Nudista Mundial ’89,” marking Palomo’s first release since 2019.
Palomo has kept a relatively low profile in recent years, but “Nudista Mundial ’89” — his debut single under his own name — is seemingly the start of a new era. Though it may mark the end of the Neon Indian moniker as far as the music is concerned, Palomo is at the top of his game, and he seems to be having fun, especially with DeMarco.
“While working on a few tunes, I was trying to get a hold of this certain piano,” Palomo said in a statement. “My keyboard player told me Mac had one at his studio so I hit him up. And on one breezy day in May, we sang a duet about two guys going to a nude beach together in Ibiza.”

Mac DeMarco has cracked his vault wide open with a 199-song collection spanning roughly nine hours. Titled One Wayne G, it’s mostly comprised of demos and sketches of material recorded between 2018 and early 2023. Fill your day with music by streaming it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
As Pitchfork points out, the title appears to be a tribute to Edmonton Oilers great Wayne Gretzky, who famously wore the number 99. Mac’s Record Label posted two photos of the Hockey Hall of Famer to its Instagram Stories, one of which had the caption, “There is only One Wayne G.” DeMarco was raised in Edmonton, where Gretzky led the Oilers to four championships in the ’80s.
One Wayne G follows DeMarco’s 2022 instrumental album Five Easy Hot Dogs, which he will support with a four-city tour beginning in July. Grab your tickets now via StubHub, where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.

Conductor Simon Rattle has spoken out about the existential threat facing the UK’s classical music scene.
Rattle, who currently serves as the music director of the London Symphony Orchestra, is set to conduct at a protest concert this week that will object to planned cuts by the BBC and Arts Council England (Ace).
It was recently revealed that the BBC Singers, a longstanding vocal ensemble that Rattle describes as the “best in the world”, is facing abolition as part of wider predicted cuts across the BBC’s classical music ecosystem.
Speaking to The Times, Rattle said: “The BBC and Arts Council England, the two largest funders of musicians in the country, seem to be operating a pincer movement against our art form.”

Ed Sheeran has released “Boat”, a new single described as a metaphor for depression.
The release follows “Eyes Closed”, the singer’s 14th chart-topping single in the UK.
Composed by the English seaside in the depths of winter, “Boat” is the opening song on the singer’s forthcoming album, Subtract.
An accompanying video, directed by Mia Barnes, shows the 32-year-old being engulfed by waves, echoing the singer’s comments on Instagram last month.
In a post announcing the album, Sheeran explained that Subtract reflects a period of turmoil. “I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety, I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up not but being able to break through for air.”
Sheeran recorded Subtract with Aaron Dessner in February last year, after experiencing various personal struggles.

Mac DeMarco has shared a surprise new album with fans – and it’s 199 tracks long.
Titled One Wayne G , the record was released on streaming services on Friday (21 April).
Comprising nearly 200 songs recorded between 2018 and 2023, One Wayne G lasts for a total of nearly nine hours.
The songs are listed on the album in the chronological order of recording, with the majority titled simply by their recording date, eg: “20190826.”
Some, however, also have more conventional song titles, such as “No Doubt About It”, “Inside the Beavers Dam”, “She Get The Gold Star”, or “The Truth”. The majority of the songs are instrumental tracks.
Fans reacted in shock to the nature of the new release, sharing their thoughts on social media.
“I’m going to be feasting this weekend let’s goo,” one person wrote.
“This is crazy,” wrote another. “I’m going to slowly make my way through this album.

Mac DeMarco is bringing all five of his easy hot dogs on the road this July. The singer-songwriter has announced a handful of live tour dates in support of Five Easy Hot Dogs, his 2022 instrumental album.

In 2016, a 19-year-old Lil Yachty emerged as a fresh-faced, red-haired maverick eagerly planting Generation Z’s flag in hip-hop. Songs like “Minnesota” intrigued many, but rap traditionalists denigrated him as a “mumble rapper” — an upstart who, they claimed, was insulting the essence of hip-hop one warbled vocal run at a time. That didn’t stop Yachty, though. In the years since, he’s kept trying new things, even as many other artists have gotten stuck retreading tired formulas. “Who cares?” he says now. “It’s going to go, or it’s not.

On Wednesday, Spotify hosted a cross-generational conversation between popular Gen Z content creator Emma Chamberlain and The Ringer founder and CEO Bill Simmons. Both have podcasts in common: Chamberlain’s Anything Goes podcast has been hosted by Spotify for only two weeks as part of an exclusive deal (and has already more than doubled in listenership, the company said), and as part of Spotify’s purchase of The Ringer for $250 million in 2020, Simmons’ network has over 50 podcasts on the platform.
Interviewed by Spotify’s global head of public affairs Dustee Jenkins, Chamberlain and Simmons shared insights about the importance of authenticity in audio, why a pivot to video in podcasting makes sense, and where they see the industry heading.
“It’s always been so exciting to me to just be vulnerable in a new way online … I started podcasting because I thought that the medium would be perfect for me.

If it’s true that good things come to those who wait then Willie J Healey is due for greatness. The indie-funk artist has quietly been chipping away at the music industry for the past decade. But now, with all his ducks in a row, Healey is ready for recognition. At this present moment, though, he and I are trying to wangle our way into a private dining room in a London restaurant for some peace and quiet. One white lie from the sympathetic waitress to her manager and we’re in. Luckily, Healey is dressed the part. The Oxfordshire-born artist is wearing a smart jacket and black trousers; his red hair is slicked back. Shiny black cowboy boots peek out from underneath his hem.
The indie-funk artist is no newbie. Healey, 28, has two records already under his belt and his third forthcoming album is his most refined yet. Due in August,...

Mac DeMarco — fresh off his annual Christmas cover — will kick off 2023 with his first new album in four years, Five Easy Hot Dogs. The instrumental album will arrive on Jan. 20 on digital/CD, while a vinyl drop is scheduled for May 12 via Mac’s Record Label.
The album serves as a kind of musical diary of an extensive road trip DeMarco took last year. It began last January, after a show in California, with DeMarco driving north into Canada, turning back to the United States, and continuing until he arrived back in Los Angeles.

This year’s Grammy nominations for Best New Artist were … unexpected, to say the least. If you look back at the odds for the Grammy nominations on Gold Derby, only five of the expected 10 contenders actually made it in, those being Latto, Muni Long, Anitta, Wet Leg, and Omar Apollo. There were definitely a lot of surprises when it came to more niche genre-specific artists, and perhaps two of the biggest surprises were jazz artists Samara Joy and Domi and Jd Beck. But don’t count out the jazzists for the win here.
Samara Joy and Domi and Jd Beck represent different branches of jazz. Joy is more of a traditional jazz vocalist. Her sophomore record, “Linger Awhile,” which is nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album, features a collection of timeless standards sung by Joy with her phenomenal voice. One of the greatest remaining bastions of Hollywood’s golden age, Musso & Frank has been beloved of everyone from Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe to Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones. The latest star to call herself a regular at the storied restaurant is North America’s premiere whistler, Molly Lewis. It’s a fitting match, as Lewis’s unique, wryly camp confection of tiki-bar blues is quite unlike anything else that’s been released since the heady days of the 1950s exotica boom. Lewis’s high-pitched birdsong is endlessly fascinating, sounding not unlike ear-piercing coloratura soprano Yma Sumac, who was the whistle-toned Ariana Grande of her day. Want a musician who seems like they might soundtrack Quentin Tarantino’s next movie? Molly Lewis is your woman.

Hoping to get to the root of his unfinished business with his nineties teenagehood, Tim Heidecker is heading back to high school. The comic actor will release his latest retrospective solo album fittingly titled High School on June 24. The first stop on his journey to the past comes on the record’s lead single “Buddy.”
The “Buddy” music video lands Heidecker in a nondescript shopping strip parking lot that could realistically be anywhere, but for him it’s a call back to the Allentown, Pennsylvania area he adventured as a teen.

Mark, Mary & Some Other People represents a leap for Hannah Marks, the 28-year-old director premiering her first solo directorial narrative feature at the Tribeca Film Festival. After writing the acclaimed, easy-going Banana Split and co-helming After Everything with Joey Power in 2018, Marks returns with an effort aimed at a similar topic: young love. Staked in the evolving and devolving of a relationship between 20-somethings, Mark, Mary & Some Other People finds the director exploring polyamory through the lens of an open relationship.
Like Marks’ previous efforts, her latest work features quippy writing based on realistic, observant portrayals of young people, like those who met at an undie run in college. Mark (Ben Rosenfield) encounters Mary (Hayley Law) at a pharmacy as the latter buys a pregnancy test, attempting to remember his face and his name. He comforts her while she pees on a stick by singing an original, loud, gravelly song—sweet,...

Mac DeMarco tackled “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” for his annual holiday tune, adding a soft-rock sheen to the seasonal staple.
The singer-songwriter adopts just the right amount of crooner vibrato on the track, pairing nicely with his woozy keys and loping drum groove.
In a lo-fi, reliably playful video, DeMarco sings, smiles and sways in front of mountains and next to a massive inflatable Santa Claus. He even plays the breezy guitar solo in the clip, which features the location tag of “Santa’s Workshop, North Pole, NY.

Crowded House have dropped their first new music in more than a decade with their new single, “Whatever You Want.” The accompanying video stars Mac DeMarco.
In the endearingly goofy Nina Ljeti-directed clip, DeMarco awakens on his couch half-dressed, contemplating the night before. As he studies himself in a mirror disapprovingly, he receives words of encouragement from a statue. Other items — including a garden gnome,...

Will This Make Me Good, the second album from Brooklyn musician Nick Hakim, begins with the Earth on fire. Cities crumble, tides rise, and yet “All These Changes” is a climate catastrophe dirge that swaddles and rocks you with its bobbing guitar strum, sighing strings and Hakim’s own tender croon, which assures, “She’ll flood us out her heart is flaming/Pretty soon we’ll be underwater.” By the song’s end, the sea’s subsumed us, but the Earth has taken pity, allowed us to adapt and beat on through the current,...

Mac DeMarco marked Christmas with a no-frills rendition of the holiday staple, “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.”
On YouTube, DeMarco said he recorded the song Wednesday, December 25th, at his own Jizz Jazz studios. The cover moves with a delightful, stripped-down swing as DeMarco croons the tune over a mix of soft drums, electric keys and a particularly tasteful acoustic guitar solo. Julian Casablancas is going to spend the rest of his time on earth being asked to talk about the first two Strokes albums. That’s the price of making music that connects with people, but you can’t blame him for chafing a little at all those questions about the work he did in his early twenties. Sometimes he runs as far as he can from that sound, as on the completely bonkers choose-your-adventure prog-noise debut that he made with his new band, the Voidz, in 2014; at other times, he...
