When Alison Brie read the scripts for “Apples Never Fall,” she knew she had to do the show and read Liane Moriarty‘s book on which it’s based. “It was Amy Delaney. It was love at first sight,” Brie tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above) of her character. “If I’m being totally honest, by the third episode — Amy’s episode and kind of the history of the character and everything she had been through emotionally — and you start to realize every episode was really fleshing out these characters and this family, and nothing was what it seemed or things were what they seemed but much more complicated and detailed. And of course the juicy mystery of it all. I think the mystery of it made me wanna read the book and everything I’m saying about the writing and those episodes made me wanna do the show.

The 2010s ushered in the golden age of television: the production of TV series became more expensive, scripts were on par with high quality feature films, and Hollywood actors forgot the cliché that "acting in TV is the end of a career."
At some point, there were even too many TV shows, and while some of them won the audience's love and achieved hit status, such as Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, others went almost unnoticed.
It is generally accepted that the heyday of sitcoms remained somewhere in the 1990s and 2000s. But such successful shows as Schitt's Creek or, for example, Abbott Elementary prove the opposite. Unfortunately, not every good sitcom has found an audience due to the abundance of projects.
Such a fate befell Catastrophe, which was released in 2015 and received unconditional love from a narrow circle of fans. The sitcom currently has a 98% rating from critics...

Exclusive: Apples Never Fall is off to a strong start on Peacock.
The series debuted on March 14 and, in its first weekend on the platform, it racked up 400M minutes watched, according to Nielsen data.
That’ll place it at No. 5 among streaming originals on the upcoming Nielsen streaming charts. The series is also the No. 3 streaming original drama series in the U.S.
The Nielsen charts won’t be publicly available for another month, so it’ll be quite a while before there’s more details on how it stacked up against competitors’ streaming originals.
Since only four days of viewing were captured in this measurement interval, it’s possible that the series will maintain this spot or even move higher in its first full week of availability. It’s worth noting that all seven episodes were released at once, which usually means a series will fall off the...

Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, which is based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel, tells the story of the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family. However, when Joy (Annette Bening) goes missing and dark secret after dark secret is revealed, we quickly see just how twisted this competitive family truly is. While it is in our nature as an audience to attempt to put the puzzle pieces together until the very end, this series gives us the answer fairly quickly, hiding it in plain sight as it throws other suspects in the path to distract us.
Why do we choose to ignore what’s clearly wrong right in front of us? It’s not only a question that the members of the Delaney family, specifically the kids, should be asking themselves when Joy does return, but the audience as well. While we could not...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Apples Never Fall finale.] Apples Never Fall spent seven episodes unraveling the mystery of Joy Delaney’s (Annette Bening) disappearance, and as it turns out, no one’s theories about whodunnit were right. In fact, the explanation was overwhelmingly simple. Each episode of the Peacock melodrama focused on a different member of the Delaney family. It featured flashbacks from “then” and “now” to show how the family’s rift happened, how it led to Joy going missing, and the aftermath. While her absence caused shockwaves and was splashed across the news, the truth was ultimately pretty anticlimactic. Joy wasn’t dead; she just left. Finding out why she left answered every lingering question the series posed. By the time we got to Sam Neill‘s Stan-focused Episode 6, everyone in the family and the court of public opinion (including the West Palm Beach police) believed he was responsible for her disappearance.

Editor’s note: The below contains spoilers for the series finale of “Apples Never Fall.”
Still reeling from that “Apples Never Fall” ending? Well, actor Sam Neill is about to take a bite out of just how that shocking finale came to be – and (surprise) it wasn’t even the original conclusion planned by showrunner Melanie Marnich.
“Apples Never Fall” strayed from the Liane Moriarty novel source material, and due to the WGA strike in 2023, production was halted in Australia. Showunner Marnich told IndieWire that due to the strike, she was no longer on set as a writer and executive producer, but that the directors and actors continued until the SAG-AFTRA strike subsequently went into effect.
“They were true to the scripts which I really appreciated and they were so respectful,” Marnich recalled. “But then the actor strike hit and we of course shut down. Honestly, when we came back,...

The Liane Moriarty cinematic universe has now come to Peacock, but how does one adapt the author behind “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” work for the screen?
“Apples Never Fall” showrunner Melanie Marnich told IndieWire that maintaining beloved novelist Moriarty’s “page-turner energy” was key for adapting the twisted family drama starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill.
“The pacing of those kinds of moments was to make the TV show have the same page-turner energy of the book,” Marnich said. “It was something I had to really be aware of. In the writer’s room, we worked really hard to craft the sort of constant turn of the story. It was so juicy. I’m a huge fan of Liane. I really, really worked to capture that same page turner energy in the show to keep things moving, but also never at the sacrifice of character development.”

The finale of “Apples Never Fall” on Peacock fills in all the gaps left behind by the six episodes before it by pulling back the curtains of what happened to missing matriarch Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) from her own perspective.
After Joy, mother and core of the Delaney family, goes missing, her husband Stan (Sam Neill) and four children — Amy (Alison Brie), Troy (Jake Lacy), Logan (Conor Merrigan Turner) and Brooke (Essie Randles) — are forced to hash out long-simmering resentments and regrets while trying to figure out where Joy went.
The series is divided into standalone episodes through each family member’s perspective, with Stan and Joy’s episodes being the climactic final two as the mystery finally comes together.

Alison Brie’s character Amy in “Apples Never Fall” does not operate like your typical eldest sibling. She lacks a steady source of income, is emotionally erratic and her housing situation is one shared with a group of graduate students.
But as the Peacock limited series’ third episode shows, she’s also perhaps the only Delaney with a healthy amount of emotional intelligence.

Australian author Liane Moriarty is known for her layered characters, complex family dynamics, and intriguing mysteries. After the success of her book-to-screen adaptation of Big Little Lies on HBO in 2017, she's been in high demand.
In 2021, Hulu adapted another novel, Nine Perfect Strangers, which expanded on the characters' arcs from the book. It became a hit because of the humor in the series.
Peacock's Apples Never Fall combines the best of both, but it was most like the book and a fun, binge-worthy watch. I couldn't stop watching because I couldn't wait to see the next twist.
Apples Never Fall explores the complexities of marriage and family when you peel back the layers. This isn't a cookie-cutter happy family. The Delaneys are raw and honest, but they love each other deeply.

Liane Moriarty’s body of work is ripe for TV adaptations, and Peacock’s Apples Never Fall is a perfect illustration of why with a tale so juicy, you’d think it fell right off the tree.
This isn't your run-of-the-mill adaptation, either. This series is a complete package – a beginning, middle, and an oh-so-satisfying end. It's like Moriarty handed us the apple pie, not just the apples.
Every character gets their moment in the sun (or should I say spotlight?), evolving right before our very eyes. Talk about character development goals!
Showrunner and Executive Producer Melanie Marnich says Moriarty captures the essence of love, marriage, and family with raw honesty. “I think she had things to say about the contradictions within love and family, the complexity, the moral complexity within love and family that were just very true.”
Joy and Stan Delaney raised their four children amidst the background...

In the opening scene of Apples Never Fall, Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) takes a leisurely bike ride through West Palm Beach, Florida. She’s got the time, having recently retired after decades of coaching tennis alongside her husband, Stan (Sam Neill). Joy cycles by palm trees and mansions and stops to browse stands of impossibly perfect fruit. But as she passes tennis courts bustling with players, her mouth curves into a wistful frown.
A sense of melancholy nags at the superficial idyll of Joy’s excursion, only to burst into outright dread when we see her bike overturned in the street, its back wheel still spinning and its frame splattered with blood, and Joy nowhere to be found. This scene introduces an alluring air of mystery regarding Joy’s inner life and the nature of her seemingly utopian environment. Unfortunately, that intrigue proves incredibly short-lived—a victim of Apples Never Fall’s plodding pace,...

Exclusive: Melanie Marnich is a huge fan of Big Little Lies scribe Liane Moriarty’s work, but when showrunning an adaptation of Moriarty’s Apples Never Fall, Marnich blocked the HBO hit from her consciousness almost entirely.
Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, which stars 2024 Oscar-nominee Annette Bening, launches tomorrow and is in international competition at next week’s Series Mania, was made with a Big Little Lies-free lens, Marnich explained to Deadline.
“I admire Big Little Lies and think it’s brilliant but I had to literally put it out my mind,” she said in the days leading up to the Lille market. “I knew I had to quite quickly ignore all [Moriarty’s past work] and ask what this book wants to be and what the best way is to honor it. How do I ignore all that came before to find the best voice and vision for this translation?”

Oscar-nominated “Nyad” star Annette Bening on Peacock? Well, sometimes miracles do happen.
“Apples Never Fall” creator Melanie Marnich wanted to swing big when it came to pitching her take on the Liane Moriarty thriller novel adaptation. Despite never having showrun before, she was determined to cast A-lister Bening as Joy Delaney, a tennis pro coach matriarch who goes missing. While all signs point to her husband Stan (Sam Neill) as the most likely culprit, Joy’s case unlocks further Delaney family secrets swirling around their four children, played by Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, and Essie Randles.
Bening, in fact, was at the center of Marnich’s initial pitch to Peacock.
“When [producer] David Heyman was looking for writers for the project I was like, ‘I’m going for it. I want this one,'” Marnich told IndieWire. “I think in my initial pitch to him, I was like, ‘I see Annette Bening as Joy.

Apples Never Fall marks the first time Sam Neill and Annette Bening have ever worked together. The Jurassic Park star admires her work so much, he was determined to make sure the actors playing the Delaney family in the Peacock limited series understood the talent they were working with. The actor tells TV Insider that while filming Apples Never Fall for five months on Australia’s Gold Coast, he hosted a three-week “Annette Bening film festival” with the Oscar nominee in attendance. “Because we were all on location, none of us were living out of home, I decided to have on Sunday nights a mini Annette Bening film festival,” Neill tells TV Insider. “I’d bring my wine (I’m also a wine maker). We’d watch an Annette Bening movie and then discuss with the star.” The “mini” festivals, as Neill describes them, were attended by Neill, Bening, and...

When comedian and actor Rob Delaney landed a role in Mission: Impossible 7, he was understandably thrilled to work with legendary star Tom Cruise. But what blew Delaney away most was the sheer depth of Cruise’s filmmaking knowledge on set.
There is no doubt that Cruise has an extensive knowledge of every bit of work he does. Delaney plays an agent working to apprehend Ethan Hunt. As part of a special operations group, Joint Special Operations Command (Jsoc). His character is determined to stop Hunt’s team though their motives may differ.
What did Rob Delaney reveal about Tom Cruise?
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick
While Tom Cruise is widely popular for the authentic stunts he does in the Mission Impossible franchise, there is a lot more to him on set.
Did a week on MI7 & it was *prettay* crazy how much he knew everything about every aspect of filmmaking.
