Over the past half-decade, M.C. Taylor has released four new albums (and a slew of outtakes compilations and live records) under the moniker of his country-soul recording outfit, Hiss Golden Messenger. But more impressive than the sheer quantity of the North Carolina singer-songwriter’s output is the degree of spiritual sensitivity, compositional craft, and high-stakes emotional urgency Taylor has been able to bring to each collection in such quick succession.
Rarely do songwriters who release original music so often manage to make each release feel as necessary as Taylor — And...

Is the years-long “The Voice” instant save curse about to be broken? If Blake Shelton‘s Americana singer Jordan Matthew Young ends up winning Season 20 during Tuesday’s grand finale, he’ll make history as the first artist to prevail who was previously saved by social media users. Since the instant save twist was first created in Season 6, none of its recipients have ever gone on to win “The Voice.” Britton Buchanan (Season 14) and Toneisha Harris (Season 18) came closest by each placing second behind their winners, but all of the other times the saved artist finished near the bottom of their respective finales.

Muzz, the new band fronted by Interpol’s Paul Banks, perform underneath a museum in the video for their new single “Knuckleduster.”
The song is brighter and more reminiscent of Banks’ alt-rock roots than Muzz’s prior singles, and the visual, shot in the basement of the American Treasure Tour Museum near Philadelphia, is a masterclass in how to dynamically film a rock band performance.
Starting off with some solid drum work by Matt Barrick (of the Walkmen, Jonathan Fire*Eater and Fleet Foxes’ touring band), the clip intercuts his...

The new folk supergroup Bonny Light Horseman (Anais Mitchell, Eric Johnson of the Fruit Bats and Josh Kaufman) have already given a few teases from their upcoming eponymous debut album, slated for early 2020. But “Jane Jane,” the trio’s third preview, offers the clearest portrait of the type of folk re-imagining at the core of the band’s mission statement.
Sung by Johnson and Mitchell, “Jane Jane” is a Southern traditional, first captured as “Jane-Jane (Three Mocking Birds)” in a field recording by a singer named Lila May Stevens in Vicksburg,...

Season 16 of “The Voice” recently concluded with Maelyn Jarmon from Team John Legend winning the latest title in the long-running NBC competition series. (Watch our video interview with Maelyn.) Although the songbird from Team John was Gold Derby’s odds-on favorite to win, it was Blake Shelton who coached three of the four finalists including country singers Gyth Rigdon, Dexter Roberts and Andrew Sevener. That brings us to an impressive statistic for Shelton. Not only has he won more titles than any other coach, with six total, but he’s also had more runners-up and finalists as well.

In the past 16 seasons, Shelton has coached nine artists to second place and a staggering 24 to the finale. Season 5 was the only one that Team Blake failed to reach the finale altogether.

After spending six seasons playing budding songwriter Scarlett O’Connor on the ABC/Cmt series drama Nashville, Clare Bowen will release her own debut album this summer.
Due July 12th, the self-titled LP features tracks like “All the Beds I’ve Made,” “Tide Rolls In,” with a guest appearance by Americana singer-guitarist Buddy Miller, and the lead single “Let It Rain,” an upbeat, soulful song that Bowen has already been performing live.
Songwriters Lori McKenna, Nathan Chapman and Wyatt Durrette all have tracks on the album, which was produced by Josh Kaufman.

Craig Finn delivered a rousing performance of his new single “Something to Hope For” on Late Night With Seth Meyers. The song is a highlight from Finn’s fourth solo album, I Need a New War, which the singer released this month.
I Need a New War is the third part in a kind of trilogy of records Finn made the past few years with a group of collaborators that includes Josh Kaufman and Joe Russo.
“These three records are really about the same kind of people,” Finn recently told Rolling Stone.

Ask a Craig Finn fan to picture the contents of the singer’s brain on a given day, and they might imagine a steady stream of the sort of first-pumping underdog tales he’s spent 16 years shouting onstage as frontman of the Hold Steady. But these days, the singer often fixates on a different kind of narrative.
“Honestly, where my head’s at, as far as what I think about when I walk around, is the more mundane stuff, more the people in these songs,” Finn says.

The season 14 winner of “The Voice” Brynn Cartelli returned to perform her new single, “Last Night’s Mascara,” on Tuesday’s results show. Minutes later it was revealed that Chevel Shepherd took the season 15 title. Let’s hope that Brynn, who like Chevel was coached by Kelly Clarkson, has more success than the season 13 champ Chloe Kohanski.
Chloe had returned to “The Voice” to debut her new single “Come This Far” on last spring’s season 14 finale. While she had made it to No. 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her winner’s song “Wish I Didn’t Love You” the previous December, that second single didn’t even chart. That might be why we have yet to get an album from Chole, the sixth champion for coach Blake Shelton who has been with the show since the start.

One thing was a near certainty heading into The Voice Season 9 finale: No mention would be made of the NBC reality juggernaut’s prior eight winners — Javier Colon, Jermaine Paul, Cassadee Pope, Danielle Bradbery, Tessanne Chin, Josh Kaufman, Craig Wayne Boyd and Sawyer Fredericks.
