Netflix had a big year in 2022, surpassing more than 223 million paid streaming subscribers globally, and there’s plenty on tap in 2023 to be excited about — including new seasons of “You” and “Shadow and Bone.”
However, the streamer also saw its first subscriber loss in over a decade in its second quarter in April, prompting massive budget cuts and the loss of multiple TV projects over the course of this year.
Below is a recap of the major Netflix shows canceled in 2022, from beloved series to shows that hadn’t even aired yet.

Exclusive: Actor and producer Karrie Martin Lachney signed with Paradigm for representation in all areas.
Lachney made a splash with her portrayal of Ana Morales in the Netflix dramedy Gentefied, created by Linda Yvette Chávez and Marvin Lemus. The series followed a multigenerational, Mexican American family living and loving in Los Angeles, co-starring Joaquin Cosio, J.J. Soria, and Carlos Santos. It ran for two seasons before it was canceled in January.
Lachney’s portrayal of Ana represented experiences that mirror that of many second-generation Latinos whose parents sacrificed everything in search of the American dream— a point of view rarely shown on television.

Netflix has canceled “Gentefied,” a half-hour Latino comedy-drama from Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, produced by America Ferrera. Season 2 of “Gentefied,” starring JJ Soria, Carlos Santos and Joaquin Cosio, was just released on the streamer this past November.
“Gentefied” followed the lives of three Mexican American cousins in Boyle Heights who must tackle gentrification, borders, babies and family separation, all while attempting to save their grandpa’s taco shop. “Gentefied” also starred Karrie Martin, Annie Gonzalez, Julissa Calderon, and even Ferrera herself played a character on the show.
Critics overwhelmingly liked the series when it debuted in 2020. The review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes gave “Gentefied” a score of 96% on the “Tomatometer,” and an average audience score of 76%. The last highly-rated Latino-focused sitcom that Netflix slashed from its programming slate was Gloria Calderón Kellett’s reboot of “One Day at a Time.”

Netflix's dramedy Gentefied, which debuted on the streamer in February 2020, is back for another round! Created by Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, and executive produced by America Ferrera, the series follows the story of a Latinx family in East Los Angeles as they grapple with saving their family's restaurant, Mama Fina's Taco, while staying ahead of the rapid gentrification in their neighborhood, Boyle Heights. Three cousins - Ana (Karrie Martin), Chris (Carlos Santos), and Erik (J.J. Soria) - and their Abuelo Casimiro (Joaquín Cosío) continue to fight the odds stacked against them in the second installment, which hit Netflix on Wednesday, Nov. 10. But will their journey span past this season?
Though Netflix has not canceled the series thus far, they have not renewed it for a season three yet, either. But that's par for the course for most of the shows on the streaming platform.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched Season 2 of “Gentefied,” streaming now on Netflix.
When “Gentefied” co-creator Marvin Lemus was a teenager, he testified on his undocumented mother’s behalf so that she could receive her green card. Decades later, under the administration of President Donald Trump, he found himself “terrified” that she’d be ripped away from him.
“I was hearing all of these stories that even green card holders were getting taken by Ice and sometimes being held for long periods of time,” Lemus tells Variety.
After spending a long time “pestering her to get her citizenship,” she finally did — while Lemus was breaking the second season of his Netflix series. “It was such an emotional release,” he recalls. “I was just so used to this being a part of my life — knowing that my mom’s status wasn’t always stable or safe or meant security.

It’s been over a year since audiences met the Morales clan and their Boyle Heights, Los Angeles taco shop, Mama Fina’s. At the end of Season 1, the group knew that Mama Fina’s was on death’s door, set to be bought out by a gentrifying white woman interested in turning it into a pop-up shop. On top of that, family patriarch Casimiro, aka Pop (Joaquín Cosio), had been picked up on a routine traffic violation and was being detained by Ice. With so much tension built up, creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez could have made this a heavily dramatized season. And it is, no doubt, but “Gentefied” always retains the sense of heart and community that made Season 1 so special.

The journey for Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez‘s Netflix series Gentefied started off as a web series that premiered at Sundance in 2017 that never saw its time on the Internet — at least as a web series it didn’t. Instead, it premiered on the streaming giant as a full-blown series putting a spotlight on the Latinx community and, as the title suggests, the hot topic of gentrification.
The series, which is executive produced by America Ferrera and has Monica Macer as showrunner, is drenched in Latinx identity as it features brown love, intersectionality, the importance of community and the nuanced arguments that come with the topic of gentrification as well as displaced communities.

America Ferrera: ‘For a Very Long Time, I Felt Very Alone and Isolated as a Latina in This Industry’
Even though she won Hollywood’s top TV awards, including an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award for her lead role in “Ugly Betty,” America Ferrera felt on her own as a Latina actress.
“For a very long time, I felt very alone and isolated as a Latina in this industry,” Ferrera said Friday at the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s 2020 Impact Awards Gala in Beverly Hills. She won the outstanding series producer impact award for her producing work on “Gentefied” and “Superstore.”
“I know many of us in this room have felt that way,” Ferrera said. “But we can write the new mandate for Latinos in this industry. Every detail from the live mariachi band to the fresh esquites and pupusas served at the Los Angeles premiere of “Gentefied” at Los Angeles’ Plaza de la Raza on Thursday night reflected the Netflix series’ aim at authentically representing the culture of the Latinx community in today’s modern age. Exec producer America Ferrera has been in the business for nearly two decades and reflected on her experience as a Latinx actor in the industry and the shift she’s witnessed in Hollywood over her career.
“I feel like for most of my career I felt so alone and so isolated from other Latinos in this industry,” Ferrera told Variety. “But now, today, I get to work with incredibly talented Latinos and bring to life a story that is so close to our hearts at a time when other creators that we love, admire and respect so much are getting to do the same.

The Los Angeles that TV and movies portray is rarely, as anyone who’s actually from Los Angeles can tell you, particularly accurate to life there outside the entertainment industry. The sprawling city is dense with its own culture, much of which, thanks to sharp influxes money and new (whiter) residents, is perpetually in danger of getting pushed out. Netflix’s new comedy “Gentefied,” from creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez based on their 2017 webseries of the same name, aims to spotlight the very people who keep getting relegated to the margins of their own city. Its central Mexican-American family has lived in Boyle Heights for decades. Now, they have to adjust to the reality of creeping gentrification and stay afloat without sacrificing their own cultural identity in the process.

America Ferrera had directed before, but not like this. She and her crew were shooting scenes from a massive burner party — think a miniature Burning Man, complete with drugs and costumes and bad dancing — for Netflix’s upcoming series “Gentefied.” Though she wouldn’t appear on camera, Ferrera was dressed for the occasion in a sheer robe, her face and chest covered in glitter and plastic stick-on jewels. The shoot presented the most significant logistical challenge she had faced behind the camera. The party, which takes up much of the fourth episode of the show was meant to give the impression of hundreds of people packed into a small Los Angeles warehouse. But Ferrera had too much soundstage and too few extras.
“I had to tell the story and do it really, really fast, screaming through a megaphone at the extras,” she says. “We only had 75 extras that had to look like hundreds.

When the TV landscape was much smaller and lily-white, any series that centered on minorities had to shoulder an unfair burden of representing that entire group. Margaret Cho’s short-lived Nineties series All-American Girl couldn’t just be a goofy family sitcom, because it was also the very first one about an Asian-American clan. Netflix may have disappointed Latinx viewers when it canceled the beloved “One Day at a Time,” but the streamer is hoping the dynamic new series “Gentefied” will help mitigate the pain. The brand new series, which is set in the rapidly gentrifying East Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights, began as a web series before making its way to Netflix. Written by first generation Chicano writers Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chavez, “Gentefied” is the latest TV show to develop from a web series, which made waves when it premiered at Sundance in 2017.
Per the official synopsis: “Created by two Chicano first-gen writers, ‘Gentefied’ is a half-hour dramatic comedy adapted from the 2017 Sundance digital darling of the same name. In this badass bilingual series about family, community, brown love, and the displacement that disrupts it all, three Mexican-American cousins struggle to chase the American Dream, even while that same dream...

Netflix is leaning into its strengths in 2020. Not only is the streaming giant pumping out dozens, if not hundreds of new shows, but many of their original series meet the demand illustrated by past successes or fill holes left by departing favorites.
So is there a new “Stranger Things” on the horizon? Perhaps a worthy follow-up to “Orange Is the New Black?” What about a replacement for syndicated sitcoms like “The Office” and “Friends”? You better believe Netflix is working to give subscribers what they want, and the below 2020 preview should illustrate exactly that.
With more competition than ever from Disney and Apple, and even more services on the way (hello HBO Max and Peacock), 2020 will be a critical year for the current king of streaming. So here’s what they’re working with:
“Locke and Key”
Release Date: Friday, February 7
