Legend has it Renate Reinsve’s still running with a joyful expression, but Joachim Trier is soon bringing her back into the fold: with regular co-writer Eskil Vogt he’s penned Sentimental Value, their follow-up to your ex-girlfriend’s favorite movie The Worst Person in the World, and which starts shooting next August with MK2 aboard. [Variety]
Described by Agat Films’ Juliette Schrameck and Mk’s Nathanaël Karmitz as a story of “family, memory and how we need to rewrite the stories we tell about ourselves in order to survive,” it concerns Nora (Reinsve), an actor, and her sister Agnes as they grieve the loss of their mother––amidst which their father, Gustav, returns from a long absence. A “once-celebrated filmmaker,” he presents the script for his planned comeback to Nora, who “categorically refuses the role,” eventually turning to a Hollywood actress, and with shooting underway in Norway, he “seizes the...

One person’s “Worst Person in the World” is another filmmaker’s new favorite collaborator.
Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, director of the cult-favorite coming-of-age romance “The Worst Person in the World,” is reteaming with that film’s star, Renate Reinsve, for “Sentimental Value.” The show-business drama will be their second film together after she won the Best Actress award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for portraying a restless, mercurial spirit Julie. “The Worst Person in the World” was nominated for Best Original Screenplay (Trier with Eskel Vogt) and Best International Feature at the 94th Academy Awards.
As first reported by Variety, “Sentimental Value” follows an actor named Nora (played by Reinsve) and her sister Agnes (yet to be cast), both grieving the death of their mother. Meanwhile, their estranged father, a formerly successful filmmaker named Gustav, re-enters their lives with a comeback script, offering the leading role to Nora. She refuses.

“Sentimental Value” will follow Nora (Reinsve), an actor, and her sister Agnes, who are grieving the loss of their mother while their father Gustav reappears in their lives after a long absence. Gustav, a once-celebrated filmmaker, has written a script for a comeback movie and offered the main part to his daughter Nora, but she categorically refuses the role. During a career retrospective in France, Gustav meets an adoring Hollywood star and offers her the part intended for Nora. MK2, the venerable family-owned film group which operates a leading arthouse multiplex chain in France and Spain, is emerging from the pandemic stronger, cooler and more ambitious than ever.

France’s Oscar selection committee today set a shortlist of five films that are in contention to be the country’s official submission to the International Feature Film category at the 2021 Academy Awards. Among the titles is Cuties, the Sundance award-winning debut drama from Maïmouna Doucouré that was well-received in France when it released this summer, but also was collaterally involved in an online backlash spurred by Netflix’s early marketing campaign.
Bac Films released Cuties in France while Netflix began rollout elsewhere on September 9. The story follows Amy, an 11-year-old girl who joins a group of dancers named “The Cuties” at school, and who rapidly grows aware of her burgeoning femininity — upsetting her mother and her values.

Paris-based powerhouse MK2 Films has picked up international distribution rights to Felipe Gálvez’s Chilean Western “Los colonos” (“The Settlers”), one of the most buzzed-about projects to come out of Chile in recent years.

“Having MK2 on board gives us a final boost for the financing process but also confirms what we always believed: that ‘The Settlers’ is a film of the highest artistic standard together with being audience appealing,” Nasi said.
Nasi described the film’s co-producers – Argentina’s Rei Cine, Denmark’s Snowglobe and France’s Cine-Sud Promotion – as a “dream team,” who have a record of backing important Latin American films.

After switching things up and flirting with genre territory with his last film Thelma, Joachim Trier is returning with his next feature, one that will see him return to his roots of sorts. Following Thelma and his English-language debut Louder Than Bombs, his new film–titled The Worst Person in the World–will close out his Oslo trilogy, which includes Reprise and Oslo, August 31st, Variety reports.
Written by Trier and his usual collaborator Eskil Vogt, it is not a political satire of America today as the title may suggest, but rather the film follows the character of Julie over four years as she “navigates the troubled waters of her love life and struggles to find her career path, leading her to take a realistic look at who she really is.”

Japanese auteur Koji Fukada’s “A Girl Missing” tops the slate of MK2 Films. The shingle also has Agnes Varda’s “Varda by Agnes” and “Jessica Forever” playing at the Berlin Film Festival. MK2 is introducing “A Girl Missing” to buyers at the European Film Market.
“A Girl Missing” reunites Fukada with the star of his Un Certain Regard prize-winning “Harmonium,” Mariko Tsutsui, in the story of a private nurse who has become part of the family she works for until a fateful day when one of the daughters disappears. The media soon reveals the kidnapper to be the nurse’s nephew.
“Anchored by Koji Fukada’s meticulous dissection of flawed and failing family relationships, ‘A Girl Missing’ is a carefully crafted film which will surprise audiences as the story unfolds,” said Juliette Schrameck, the managing director of MK2 Films.
“The sobriety and quiet beauty of the seemingly tranquil setting...
