Exclusive: Artists Equity has come on to Kiss of the Spider Woman, serving as the main studio and producer of the feature adaptation of the 1993 Broadway musical based on Manuel Puig’s landmark 1976 novel. Diego Luna and Tonatiuh will star in the adaptation as Valentin Arregui and Luis Molina, respectively. They join Jennifer Lopez, who was previously announced in the titular role. Puig’s novel was, of course, previously adapted for the screen by Héctor Babenco. That 1985 version was nominated for four Oscars, with William Hurt winning Best Actor.
The show, which won seven Tony Awards, was written by Terrence McNally with a score by composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb. The film is scripted and directed by Oscar winner Bill Condon, with Barry Josephson, Tom Kirdahy and Greg Yolen producing alongside Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for Artists Equity, which has secured independent financing for the film.

Pressure often mounts on directors with a breakout debut to double down on what made their first feature so acclaimed. Lila Avilés, on the other hand, ran in the opposite direction. Her debut feature, 2019’s The Chambermaid, follows a quiet hotel housekeeper in Mexico City from an austere remove as she strives to improve her station in life. Avilés’s follow-up, Tótem, leans into chaos by capturing the rambunctious energy of a family over a single day as they attempt to prepare for a big celebration.
And yet, the two films, aesthetically different as they may be, feel of a piece with one another. Be it through a claustrophobic close-up or from a sterile long shot, Avilés always brings us into an emotional communion with her characters’ innermost thoughts and desires. She’s comfortable operating within paradoxes, such as the central one at the core of Tótem: the birthday party...

When Tonatiuh was at school, he was voted his year’s “Beach Boy,” a prank version of Miss Universe. As part of a town parade, hunky Tona was a “vision, slinking down the street,” remembers an old classmate in one of many stories being swapped at the now 30-something beach boy’s birthday party.
Things are in full swing, but Tona (Mateo Garcia Elizondo) has yet to make an appearance. He is in the quietest bedroom in the family home, struggling to get dressed for the second time. He was slowly making his way to the garden when he lost control of his bowels. Shit happens, as you might say. He is resigned to it.
Tona is dying. Everyone knows it, but his 7-year-old daughter Sol (Naima Senties) clings to the belief that if she holds her breath and makes a wish often enough, her still-beautiful dad will survive. Sol...

Writer-director Lila Avilés’s tender film, told largely through the eyes of a seven-year-old girl, is a minutely observed ensemble piece in which grief and celebration go hand in hand
“When will the world end?” There’s a great deal of uncertainty in the life of seven-year-old Sol (Naíma Sentíes) right now, so she takes her mother’s phone to a quiet corner away from the bustle in her grandfather’s house and puts her big question to Siri. The little girl has picked up enough from the fragments of conversation of the adults thronging in the house to understand that, while the end is still a way off, her world, or at least part of it, is about to change for ever.

This is Day 109 of the WGA strike and Day 36 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA teamed up for its first bicoastal picket in Los Angeles and New York on Friday, and Latino Hollywood showed up in droves.
At Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, more than 2,000 actors, writers and supporters hit the sidewalks as temperatures hit the high-80s. Salsa and Bachata music blasted through the speakers near Gates 2 and 3 as patient strike captains including Vida star Chelsea Rendon, kept everyone moving safely. One captain was overheard saying, “You have to keep moving, but you don’t have to stop dancing!” And so they did.

Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired North American rights to the Berlin-premiering family drama “Tótem,” written and directed by “The Chambermaid” helmer Lila Avilés.
Winner of the festival’s Ecumenical Jury Prize, the film follows seven-year-old Sol, who spends the day at her grandfather’s home, helping her aunts Nuri and Alejandra with the preparations for a surprise party they’re throwing for her father, Tonatiuh, who is terminally ill. However, as night descends, a strange and chaotic atmosphere takes over, shattering the bonds that hold the family together, and Sol will come to understand that her world will change dramatically.
Sideshow and Janus Films are planning a theatrical release later this year.

Tótem, the 2023 Berlinale competition title that amassed solid reviews and eventually won the festival’s Ecumenical Jury Prize, has found a home in North America.
Frequent art house distribution bedfellows Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired the feature, from Mexican filmmaker Lila Avilés and the follow-up to The Chambermaid. A theatrical release later this year is planned.
The family drama — produced by Tatiana Graullera, Lila Avilés and Louise Riousse — introduces newcomer Naíma Sentíes in her first role and also stars Montserrat Marañon (Bardo), Marisol Gasê, Saori Gurza, Mateo García Elizondo, Teresita Sánchez (The Chambermaid, Dos Estaciones), Francisco Maldonado, Iazua Larios and Alberto Amador. Presented largely from the point of view of two children, Mexican director Lila Avilés’ intimate, emotionally rich Berlin competition entry “Tótem” immerses audiences in a boisterous family gathering, where a handful of adult siblings have gathered to celebrate the birthday of their brother, a painter named Tonatiuh (Mateo Garcia). “Tona” is barely seen for most of the movie, confined to a back room where he refuses visitors. Naturally, this confuses 7-year-old Sol (Naíma Sentíes), who spends the day wandering the house alone, building a pillow fort in the living room or collecting snails in the garden.
“Sometimes I feel like my dad doesn’t love me when he says he doesn’t want to see me,” Sol confides to her father’s trusted nurse, Cruz. Your heart can’t help but break a little in that moment, for by this time, Avilés has already provided enough clues for us to...

Mexican writer-director Lila Aviles’ justly acclaimed 2018 debut The Chambermaid unfolded in a fancy Mexico City hotel whose rooms the titular heroine was always striving to clean, perpetually trying to erase the evidence of guests. Her follow-up, Totem, in the main competition at this year’s Berlinale, also unfurls mostly in one large space, but it’s a kind of looking-glass inversion of Chambermaid’s clinical austerity. This time, the environment is not an anonymous hostelry, but a well-loved, thoroughly lived-in family home teeming with relatives, clutter, pets, foodstuffs and memories that drift through the sunlight like dust motes.
Noisy, joyous and as exhausting as the multi-generational bash at the heart of its story, Totem packs a hefty wallop for a film that’s only 95 minutes, and should further solidify Aviles’ reputation as an auteur with a unique vision and remarkable skills with actors, especially non-professionals.

It takes a lot to be a bombshell. Emmy Rossum transformed into busty billboard queen Angelyne for the eponymous Peacock series, premiering May 19, but the physical embodiment of the performance artist took a toll on the “Shameless” alum.
Rossum, who also executive produces the series alongside husband and “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, revealed that she spent an average of four to five hours in makeup every day and bleached her eyebrows for the role. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Rossum also got blisters from the fake breasts and suffered tear duct issues from wearing two pairs of contact lenses.
“The physicality of the character was challenging,” Rossum told the outlet. “The body is heavy, yet it has to feel light and effervescent…I found it to be completely liberating to look in the mirror and not see myself at all. At first, it’s unnerving. But feeling lost gives way...

“Promised Land” has been pulled from ABC’s primetime schedule after just five episodes. The drama will move to Hulu and finish its 10-episode run there.
The series, which focuses on a Latinx family in Sonoma Valley, has been very low rated in its short run — but critical reviews remain strong. “Promised Land,” which currently averages 2.9 million total viewers per episode, including one week of (mostly) DVR catchup, has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, though it’s only based on seven critics.
That viewer tally ranks the show 88th on broadcast TV, between ABC game show “The Chase” and NBC sitcom “American Auto.”
“Promised Land” is technically not canceled — yet. There has been no decision about a potential Season 2, an ABC insider told TheWrap.

The new ABC drama “Promised Land” is moving over to Hulu.
The drama series premiered on the broadcast network on Jan. 24. Beginning March 1, it will move to the streaming service for the final five episodes of Season 1. The show has been far from a ratings breakout during its initial episodes. Season to date in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings, it is averaging just a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 2.9 million viewers per episode.
“‘Promised Land’ is a beautifully executed and tremendously entertaining series of which everyone at our company is extremely proud,” ABC said in a statement. “We know it has a passionate audience that is very invested in this show, and those viewers will be able to stream all subsequent episodes exclusively on Hulu every Tuesday for the rest of the season.”
As a result of the scheduling change, medical drama “The Good Doctor” will return earlier than expected for its midseason premiere.

. It has a sprawling cast spread across two timelines that intersect in a way that sets the show apart, but which ABC nonetheless has barred coverage from mentioning before the show’s Monday premiere. Over the course of the first two episodes screened for critics, “Promised Land” explores the promise and poison of the American dream — a typical lens through which to view wealthy dynasties, but one that has more pointed resonance on this show, which specifically centers Mexican and Mexican-American characters. With beautiful shots of southern California deserts and vineyards, heightened acting, and a sweeping score by Gustavo Santaolalla and Kevin Kiner, “Promised Land” immediately distinguishes itself.
The pilot introduces two storylines: one about Mexican teens (played by Katya Martín and Andres Velez) risking everything to cross the border into the United States to work at a near-mythical vineyard, and another about the rich and powerful people who own it.

ABC likes to have a sudsy primetime soap on its midseason roster, and Promised Land looks like a winner.
In the past, we've had one-and-done but highly watchable shows like Grand Hotel and The Baker and the Beauty, so we're hoping Promised Land stands the test of time.
The series is an epic, generation-spanning drama about two Latinx families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley.
The first trailer dropped at the network's panel during the Winter TCA tour, and there was another big announcement regarding the series:
The first two episodes will be available on Hulu the day after the series premiere on ABC, marking the first time ABC programming will be released on Hulu before debuting on the network.
The series premieres Monday, Jan. 24 (10:01-11:00 p.m. Est), on ABC, out of The Bachelor.
Will Promised Land and The Bachelor be a match made in TV heaven?...

An epic love story will not be taking flight at ABC.
The network has officially scrapped its fairytale drama from Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis.
The cast of the potential series was set to be led by Brittany O’Grady (Little Voice), who played cynical princess Luna, and Eleanor Fanyinka (Holby City), who played a mysterious character known as The Seer.
Modern Family's Sarah Hyland was also set to appear in the project as a princess named Rose.
O'Grady was set to be the lead as Luna, with it being revealed that the character is changed by a broken heart.
She does not believe in love stories, but “she is about to find herself caught in the most epic one of all — her own.”
Epic was described as “a romantic anthology series set in the fairytale universe of Disney… taking place in a Disney-like Enchanted Forest.

Tanya Saracho performed no small feat trying to tie up the complex character relationships in her Starz comedy “Vida” in a six-episode final season. But even as she was juggling tumultuous familial relationships with Lyn (Melissa Barrera) and Emma (Mishel Prada) learning their father is actually alive with equally rocky romantic relationships for each sister, and an increasingly volatile activism storyline that involved Ice, she didn’t want to forego hosting a couple of big events.
