In scientific terms, double blind refers to an experiment in which neither the subjects nor those in charge of the experiment know who is getting the drug and who is getting a placebo. The new Irish thriller Double Blind, not to be confused with another medical thriller of the same name, revolves around one such experiment, a first stage trial of a drug that might eliminate the need for sleep. And if that sounds familiar, it might be due to another recent Irish film, The Sleep Experiment, based off of the creepypasta The Russian Sleep Experiment. But while there are echoes of that here, the two tell their stories in very different ways.
Double Blind follows Claire, a broke young woman who volunteers for a clinical trial run by Blackwood Pharmaceuticals.

With mistrust in science and healthcare being so out of hand these days, the timing of Double Blind couldn’t be better. Real-world misgivings about Big Pharma, experimental medicines, and scientific ethics fuel this Irish horror movie where human lab-rats must follow one important rule: don’t fall asleep. Otherwise they will die. The concept is improbable, but director Ian Hunt-Duffy and writer Darach McGarrigle go that extra mile when getting under people’s skin. The end product is both clever and stylish, not to mention unrelentingly suspenseful.
The movie’s titular setting — a hush-hush clinical trial where neither the participant nor the experimenter know who is receiving a certain treatment — is ideal for creating unease and terror. The seven unaware test subjects are locked away in a cold and secluded facility, then fed mysterious drugs by a small staff led by Pollyanna McIntosh’s impersonal character. "Everyone - stay awake, whatever you do! Don't even close your eyes...!" Epic Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie horror film titled Double Blind, which is a reference to the drug test study concept of even keeping the researchers in the dark. This first premiered at last year's Neuchâtel Fantastic Film Fest, then it also stopped by the FilmQuest Fest in the US. After an experimental drug trial goes awry, the test subjects face a terrifying side effect: if you fall asleep you die. Trapped in an isolated facility, panic ensues as they try to escape and somehow stay awake. Fighting off sleep, and each other, to stay alive. Starring Millie Brady, Pollyanna McIntosh, Kate Ashfield, Diarmuid Noyes, Akshay Kumar, and Brenock O'Connor. Set for release in February if anyone is interested in finding out who makes it out alive... This looks intense, not sure why they're attacking each other.

“Ted Lasso” breakout Phil Dunster’s role in the second season of “Surface” has been revealed.
Dunster joining the second season of the Gugu Mbatha-Raw-led Apple series was reported in early March, but character details were being kept under wraps at the time.
Variety can now exclusively report that Dunster will star as Quinn, the older brother of Eliza (Millie Brady). Quinn is described as “the privileged scion of a troubled, old-money family who’s attempting to blaze a new trail for the younger generation – all the while struggling against his own darker tendencies.”
As previously announced, “Surface” Season 2 will see Mbatha-Raw’s character Sophie return to her hometown of London and “rediscovering the unfinished relationships that have haunted her memories – as she finds out where she really came from, and what made her the flawed person she was.”

What would you do if you couldn't remember the day you almost died?
The new Apple TV+ drama series Surface aims to answer that question.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays a woman named Sophie who is left with severe memory loss after falling into the ocean.
Everyone wants her to believe she tried to kill herself, but Sophie has questions.
“But if my life was so perfect, why did I try to end it?” she wonders.
It's a logical question, and if the trailer is any indication, this will be a big psychological thriller with more questions than answers.
According to the description, Sophie is "a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss, believed to be a result of a suicide attempt."

“If my life was so perfect, why did I try to end it?”
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars in and executive produces the psychological thriller “Surface,” premiering on AppleTV+ July 29. The drama series is the latest Apple-produced show alongside Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company. “I May Destroy You” Emmy-nominated director Sam Miller helms four episodes of the series, including the pilot, and also executive produces the series; actress Jennifer Morrison, Kevin Sullivan, and Tucker Gates also directed episodes. Veronica West created the eight-episode series.
“Surface” centers on a botched suicide gone wrong. Mbatha-Raw plays a woman who is believed to be named Sophie, despite her ID saying otherwise, who jumped (fell?) off a boat in the San Francisco Bay. Sophie now has amnesia and struggles to recount the moments before her “accident” as a conspiracy unravels before her.
“Do you know what it feels like to not remember anything?...

Apple TV+ has unveiled a first-look at ‘Surface,’ the new eight-episode psychological thriller from Veronica West
Set in high-end San Francisco, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“The Morning Show”) stars as Sophie, a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss, believed to be a result of a suicide attempt. As Sophie embarks on a quest to put the pieces of her life back together with the help of her husband and friends, she begins to question whether or not the truth she is told is in fact the truth she has lived.
Through twists and turns and an unexpected love triangle, this sexy, elevated thriller asks: What if you woke up one day and didn’t know your own secrets? “Surface” is a story of self-discovery which contemplates if we are pre-programmed to become who we are, or if we choose our own identity.
Set in high-end San Francisco, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“The Morning Show”) stars as Sophie, a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss, believed to be a result of a suicide attempt. Spoiler Alert: Do not keep reading if you have not finished Season 5 of “The Last Kingdom.”
“The Last Kingdom” is coming to an end.
Although a two-hour movie followup is currently filming, Season 5 of the Netflix historical drama wraps up the story of its central character, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, played by Alexander Dreymon, in a very satisfying way — as the sins of Uhtred’s past collide head on with his present and the future of England.
Uhtred finds himself in an unusual place at the beginning of the season — unable to be with Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), the woman he loves and the Lady of Merica, he presides over a Mercian border town at her request. But strange things are in the air, as Brida (Emily Cox) is determined to have her vengeance once and for all and the enemies of the House of Wessex are gathering.
