Aaron Bear is a filmmaker known for his unique storytelling style and ability to capture the human experience with honesty and depth. Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, his upbringing in a Midwestern town greatly influenced his perspective and fueled his passion for exploring diverse narratives. Have you ever been to the rustbelt region in Ohio? It's wild.
From a young age, Aaron felt a deep connection to the arts and expressed himself through various creative outlets.(theater/music/nature) However, it was at the age of 16 (in 1997) that he came out as queer. This pivotal moment in his life not only shaped his personal identity but also became a driving force behind his desire to tell stories that shed light on the LGBTQ+ community.
And dammit, he wanted to be a filmmaker. Aaron took matters into his own hands and funded his own film school education. With sheer dedication and unwavering commitment, Aaron honed his skills, immersing himself in the intricacies of the craft. This self-made approach not only showcased Mr. Bear's own resourcefulness but also laid the foundation for future successes.
After completing his education, life took a detour. Aaron moved to Seattle and his creative talents led him to secure a position at Xbox/Microsoft Studios where he got to utilize his skills in visual storytelling and narrative development. After 7 years at Microsoft Studios, Aaron transitioned to Starbucks Creative Studio. During his 5 year tenure there, Aaron collaborated with talented individuals from various backgrounds, working on thoughtful brand campaigns and pushing the boundaries of creative expression.
However, his filmmaking background kept itching at my brain. It was with his first feature documentary, "Finding Kim," that he felt like he truly made his mark as a filmmaker. The film intimately explores the life and journey of Kim, a transgender man navigating the complexities of identity and self-acceptance. With a signature blend of empathy, compassion, and keen observation, Aaron's directorial debut captivated audiences and earned critical acclaim. "Finding Kim" went on to receive numerous accolades and was praised for its compelling storytelling, shedding light on the transgender experience with grace and authenticity. The film's success solidified his position as a prominent voice in the world of LGBTQ+ filmmaking, and Aaron stands as an advocate for representation and inclusion.
Today, Aaron's work continues to push boundaries and challenge societal norms. He just released his second feature documentary - Yes I Am - The Ric Weiland Story. Starring Bill Gates & Executive Produced by EMMY-winning Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato at World Of Wonder. Zachary Quinto narrates. Give it a Google and watch on any of the streaming VODs.
My commitment to creating meaningful stories that amplify marginalized voices carries on. I'm striving to make a lasting impact on both the film industry and the communities I represent.
