New York Times reporter Joe Coscarelli‘s new book, Rap Capital: An Atlanta Story, is a thorough account of the rise of Atlanta hip-hop as a business and a culture. Through vignettes with the city’s eclectic cast of characters — rappers and businesspeople alike — Coscarelli paints a vivid portrait of the city’s unique wealth of talent. The book’s concern with 2013 until 2020 lands right as the forces of racism and capitalism, a constant source of tension within hip-hop, confronted the dawn of the streaming era. In the chapter on Migos,...

On Monday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert kicked things off with a cold open gag inspired by the recent uproar over Spotify’s deal with podcaster Joe Rogan, because of the the huge amount of factually incorrect information about vaccines and Covid-19 featured on his show.
The gag was simple: A Spotify playlist where each selected song formed part of a sentence advancing lies about Covid-19 vaccines.
Of course, if you need a quick catch up: Last week Neil Young removed his music from Spotify in protest of Rogan. The same week, more than 200 scientists and medical experts released an open letter urging Spotify to quit promoting vaccine misinformation. And on Friday, Joni Mitchell announced she would be removing her music from Spotify to show solidarity with Young.
This has resulted in Spotify taking a huge stock market hit, and now it says it will add content warnings to podcasts touching on Covid.

‘’I was saying that they had amnesia about everything: The Cocaine City DVDs, the Coke Boys era, from Chinx to the Max B collaborations,” French Montana tells me. “I felt like they have had amnesia about my accomplishments.” The rapper spent the past couple of years out of the spotlight, in part to focus on fatherhood, in part to focus on his health. He quit drinking after being hospitalized in 2019 for exhaustion — or, as he put it, “turning up too much.”

An Avengers-style posse cut arrived today, unexpectedly. On it, J. Cole outrapped Young Thug. Merely looking at that sentence is painful. Up until this point, the only person to indisputably best Jeffery Lamar Williams on a song was Rich Homie Quan, about half a decade ago.
Then “The London” happened.
Produced by T-Minus and also featuring Travis Scott on moody chorus duties, the track is a prime example of how far Cole has ventured from his curmudgeonly comfort zone and into interesting stylistic territory. His single “Middle Child” is among...

It isn’t clear when rappers started singing better than pop stars. Maybe the opportunity was always present, just never fully cultivated. Maybe it was when waves of artists like Ja Rule and 50 Cent, T-Pain or Future, Kanye or Drake began bursting onto the scene. It might just be a byproduct of the democratization of the production process, thanks to Fruity Loops, Garageband, and even Playstation’s MTV Music Generator. Whatever the case, the trend is in full effect now. It’s close to a prerequisite for rappers to...

The rapper Yella Beezy was barely known outside of Dallas just six months ago, but when Beyoncé and Jay-z’s On the Run II tour came to town in September, they invited the 26-year-old to open for them. That’s thanks to “That’s on Me,” which is both a great single and a prophetic one: “You can snooze if you want to,” Beezy warns, “but not on me, baby.” And sure enough, the week ending September 22nd, almost a year after it originally came out, “That’s on Me...

Since February, the young Atlanta rappers Gunna and Lil Baby have become one of the most talked-about combos in hip-hop. On a string of releases — “Oh Okay” with fellow ATLien Young Thug, “Sold Out Dates” and the latest, “Drip Too Hard” — the pair have relied on a simple and beguiling formula: We-made-it boasts delivered in the tone of plaintive ballads. They match slippery vocal patterns that keen and decay with instrumentals full of flickering guitars and biting bass, often produced in part by producer Turbo.

Elton John is no Rich Homie Quan, 6lack is the anti-Gunna and On The Rvn is a pit stop that could been an entire road trip. Young Thug’s latest Ep, which dropped late Sunday night, is a pop-leaning journey where the Atlanta rapper cedes the spotlight to a Rolodex of more streaming-friendly guests. The gambit works, and creates an intriguing conundrum in its wake: Where does Thugger go from here?

Ask a casual fan what they like about Travis Scott, and you’re likely to hear one thing again and again: “He has the best live show in hip-hop.” It’s a cliché, a familiar refrain that hints at Scott’s talents without giving him his full due. Ultimately it’s a backhanded compliment that means little, considering how many rappers still perform over MP3s of their vocals and hire their weed carriers to crowd the stage.
