As expected, a group of pro-TikTok influencers made a joint statement in Washington, D.C. on March 22. Upon their arrival, the short-form content creators took to Capitol Hill, where they urged Congressional leaders not to ban an app that supports their respective careers.
TikTok announced earlier this week that it would cover travel expenses to send dozens of creators to the U.S. capital. The initiative is timed to serve as a prelude to TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew‘s appearance before Congress, which will occur on March 23. The app’s chief is expected to argue that his company does not deserve a nationwide ban because its data collection practices are not as big of a security risk as lawmakers seem to believe. The bipartisan Restrict Act, which has received praise from the Biden White House, was introduced during the first week of March.

A textbook case of how vital production design can be to creating and sustaining the mood of a movie, Beck Rainford's work on Richard Billingham's film is so intense you can almost smell it. She recreates, alongside Billingham a snapshot of the bleak side of Thatcher's Britain, as he draws on his own childhood and photographic studies of his family to depict a dysfunctional family. Presented as a triptych, we see his alcoholic father Ray (Patrick Romer), in a framing device, elderly and alone after Liz (Deidre Kelly) has left him. The film then flashes back to two more periods in the family's life with the focus falling on Richard's little brother Jason - first seen as a toddler and then as an older child (when he is played by Joshua Millard-Lloyd...

The first person we meet in “Ray & Liz” is elderly Ray (Patrick Romer). Alone in a tiny room, abandoned by his wife Liz (Deirdre Kelly), he has taken to his bed seemingly permanently, waking only long enough to drink as much as it takes to keep himself drunk. He keeps a photo of himself as a young man with his bride stuck to a mirror next to a religious pamphlet that delivers the only foreshadowing this film feels like giving: a Bible verse instructing children to “obey [their] parents in everything.”
“Ray & Liz,” Richard Billingham’s debut feature, punctuates its main action with visits to this room, with the rest of the quietly downcast story taking place during the 1980s, as Ray and Liz descend into poverty, despair, and alcoholism in a council flat outside of Birmingham, England. Their children — Richard and his younger brother Jason — are along for the ride,...

The following essay was produced as part of the 2018 Nyff Critics Academy, a workshop for aspiring film critics that took place during the 56th edition of the New York Film Festival.
Photographers Richard Billingham and Bill Cunningham, across decades and continents, made themselves invisible as they captured people with their cameras. They constantly played with distances — and ideas of distancing — and that allowed their photos to develop into historical documents of their times, capable of collapsing the personal and the social, the indoor and outdoor, and — most startlingly — the private and the public.
Both artists set out on a journey of self-exploration and self-determination that is determined through a long process of photographing others, and both artists created biographies for thousands of nameless people by focusing on the intersections of history, politics, and geography. And now, both artists have inspired films that turn the camera around and do the same for them.

Art imitates life “Ray & Liz,” the autobiographical debut feature by Turner Prize-nominated artist Richard Billingham; that’s nothing new. But it’s the way art imitates, reflects and recomposes other art — specifically, Billingham’s much-discussed photography — that lends complex layers of memoir and mimesis to this singular spin on the British kitchen-sink drama, preserving both the director’s childhood and his creative evolution in gorgeous, grainy amber. Collating multiple visual and thematic preoccupations from the director’s fine-art oeuvre (notably his bleakly intimate portraiture of his working-class parents) and filtering them through the ingenious compositional eye of d.p. Daniel Landin, “Ray & Liz” is formally arresting and rigorous, though not at the expense of its direct emotional force. Commercially, this Locarno competition entry is an uncompromisingly hard sell, though festival bookings will come thick and fast.
Familiarity with Billingham’s photographic output is by no means vital to an appreciation of “Ray & Liz,...

If there is an image to best introduce audiences to the grimy cinematic world of Ray & Liz–the remarkable debut feature of Turner prize-nominated visual artist Richard Billingham–it might be, fittingly, the very first one to hit the screen: that of a cracked, burnt-out light bulb filmed dangling beneath a nicotine-stained ceiling. Billingham has spent much of his career as an artist documenting and, in his short films, dramatizing the lives of his father Raymond and mother Elizabeth (Deirdre Kelly and–best of all–Ella Smith) and Ray & Liz could be viewed as a culmination of that work. It’s an immersive poetic-realist dive into the artist’s fractured memories of his parents during the time he spent growing up in Birmingham in the ‘70s and ‘80s.
One could say that the main strength of Ray & Liz is the vividness of those memories. Billingham’s screenplay cuts between three time periods,...

One of our most-anticipated films in the Locarno Film Festival lineup is Ray & Liz, the directorial debut from acclaimed U.K. photographer and artist Richard Billingham. Shot by Under the Skin cinematographer Daniel Landin, the film is divided into three chapters as Billingham recalls his memories of growing up, and specifically his parents’ relationship. World premiering today, the first trailer, clip, and poster have now arrived which shows off the film’s distinct style and promising drama.
“Ray & Liz is a concentration of my own lived experience of growing up in a tower block on a council flat during Thatcher-era Britain. By sticking true to real life, lived experience and observation I want to recreate a world that can only have come about from my being a witness to it,” Billingham said. “Throughout the film Ray and Liz’s relationship is tested by poverty, addiction and being sold short...

Consolidating as one of key sales agents at the Locarno Festival, Fiorella Moretti and Hedi Zardi’s Paris-based Luxbox has acquired sales rights to Richard Billingham’s awaited Golden Leopard contender “Ray & Liz” and “Suburban Birds,” from China’s Qiu Sheng, screening in Cinema of the Present. “Suburban Birds” is Luxbox’s first Chinese title. Both titles were announced July 11 by the Locarno Festival as its unveiled its full lineup. Rapid Eye Movies has already acquired German distribution rights to “Ray & Liz,” meaning Luxbox’s world sales rights deal is for outside the U.K. and Germany.
World premiering in Locarno’s main international competition, and produced by Jacqui Davies at her new production house, Primitive Film, “Ray & Liz” returns to the same bedrock inspiration which launched Billingham’s photographer career in the 90s as the first recipient of the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize: His own family – parents Ray and Liz and younger brother Jason.

White Dee has hit out at last year's controversial documentary Benefits Street, claiming that the people featured in the programme have lost "everything".
The show - which aired in January and February 2014 - followed the residents of James Turner Street in Birmingham but Dee Kelly has now told BBC Radio 5 Live that it had a negative effect on the community.
Speaking on The Stephen Nolan Show yesterday (March 29), she said: "There's absolutely nothing left now of what we had before.
"People aren't talking to each other. People have moved... It is all because of the show. The James Turner Street that I knew and loved, we used to have barbecues in the summer where we'd all chip in and every child on the street would come. We'd all chip in, we'd all buy the stuff, we'd cook it, the kids would have fun."
She added: "It was like one great big massive happy family.

George Gilbey has finished in fourth place in the Celebrity Big Brother final.
After the exits of White Dee and Edele Lynch, the battle is now between James Jordan, Audley Harrison and Gary Busey.
Speaking to Emma Willis after his eviction, George said he was "overwhelmed" by his time in the house.
He said: "I can't even believe I was in the final. It was something that I never expected."
George carried on to say: "Edele is lovely. We'd been cuddle buddies for a little while.
"It was crazy. I didn't have any preconceptions, and I judged everyone on face value."
The Gogglebox star revealed that at times "you just forget the cameras are on you".
Talking about James, he said: "I think sometimes he'll stir a situation when it wasn't necessary."
He concluded by saying that he is rejuvenated after his Big Brother experience, adding: "I got my confidence back!

The Celebrity Big Brother housemates paid tribute to one another at their final supper last night.
Audley Harrison was the first to stand and told James Jordan that they have "battled" a lot - though now he has "come to respect" his rival.
"[I'm] still trying to understand you but I definitely think you've got a good heart in there," he continued. "A lot of what you do is tongue in cheek and you're an okay guy."
The next person to give a toast was White Dee, who chose to direct her comments towards Gary Busey - or, as she put it, "Big Man Mr Busey".
"I'd only ever seen you on the big screen, while watching my movies," She said. "Very starstruck when I came in. It's a pleasure to sit and talk to you and listen to you and learn from you. You're an absolute font of all knowledge.

Whatever George Gilbey puts in his aftershave, we want some.
The Gogglebox star is at it again, it seems, as he was seen getting extremely cosy under the sheets with Edele Lynch last night (September 11).
"You haven't over seasoned yourself," Edele cooed to George in reference to his mystery love potion.
"I have a little bit. Am I still smelling?" he asked. She replied: "Could be worse. I'm not choking."
The pair then enjoyed a kiss under the covers, as George joked: "We're behind the bike sheds!"
After Dee asked them to keep quiet, George responded: "Your favourite son is about to lose his virginity, you keep quiet!"
George has already enjoyed a mini-romance with Made in Chelsea star Stephanie Pratt during his time in the house.
Celebrity Big Brother concludes this evening (September 12) at 9pm on Channel 5, as George, Edele, Gary Busey, White Dee, James Jordan and Audley Harrison battle it out.

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Gary Busey upset some of the housemates yet again after last night's double eviction.
Ricci Guarnaccio and Lauren Goodger left the house yesterday (September 10) after receiving the fewest votes from the public, leaving some of the group surprised.
While White Dee was emotional that Ricci had gone, James Jordan confessed: "I'm shocked, because he's such a nice guy."
However, they were taken aback when Gary replied: "He got voted most boring... He's gone and the rest is history, let it go."
James complained about Gary's rudeness, and later with Dee they agreed that the actor has "no respect".
Meanwhile, Gary told Edele Lynch that he always knew he would be in the final because of what he's "been through", adding that the word "rude" stands for "riding upon defaming energy".

Celebrity Big Brother contestant Gary Busey has rowed with an emotional Edele Lynch.
After housemates Edele and George Gilbey chatted loudly in the garden and James Jordan asked them to be quieter, Gary said: "That's their hobby, to be very loud."
Edele retorted: "Don't you dare brand me as rude," before explaining she was only talking to her friend.
She then apologised to Gary, and demanded that he return the favour, only for him to say: "I apologise… see ya."
Edele took off to the bedroom in tears, and talked to George, bemoaning Gary "think[ing] he's right all the f**king time".
Gary came onto the bedroom attempting to apologise, but Edele left him alone with George.
The Gogglebox star then said to Gary: "Sometimes I find you intolerable… you took it one step further."

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Lauren Goodger has apologised to Ricci Guarnaccio following their argument.
Ricci previously complained that he felt "used" by Lauren after she implied he was fake.
Lauren apologised to Ricci in the garden, saying: "I don't want to row with you, I'm sorry."
Ricci echoed the Towie star's sentiment, and the pair seem to have patched things up for the time being.
The rest of the housemates also discussed last night's arguments. While George Gilbey defended Lauren, stating he didn't like Ricci from the start, Edele Lynch said: "You know what Lauren's like when she's had a drink though... she has to say what she's feeling."
James Jordan suggested that Lauren is playing a game, saying: "She's definitely not the sharpest tool in the box, however she's very well media-trained... she knows how to create a story."

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Ricci Guarnaccio complained that he felt "used" by Lauren Goodger yesterday (September 8).
The Geordie Shore star took offence in a conversation with Lauren, in which she explained that she would rather be alone than be in a group of fake people.
"I'd rather stand solo than be something I ain't," she added.
Ricci appeared to take the comment to heart, and later accused Lauren of suggesting that he was fake - prompting George Gilbey, Edele Lynch and James Jordan to leave the "deep" conversation.
While Edele suggested that both Lauren and Ricci were paranoid and having "a conversation about nothing", Lauren promised that Ricci would be her friend for life.
However, the argument continued into the garden, as Ricci admitted he was upset with Lauren for siding with Gary Busey instead of their friend White Dee.

Celebrity Big Brother housemates Gary Busey and White Dee made up yesterday (September 8) after an explosive row earlier this week.
The morning after the argument, there was still tension in the air as Edele Lynch suggested that the duo could "get to the point where they'll be civil".
Meanwhile, Audley Harrison spoke to Big Brother in the Diary Room and admitted that he was surprised there wasn't more empathy for Gary among the other housemates.
James Jordan, for instance, was still annoyed with Gary, telling Dee: "The Hollywood legend is a complete and utter arsehole."
Dee later went to the Diary Room to speak about Gary to Big Brother, complaining: "He has lied to me and called me a liar."
She added that she gave him the benefit of the doubt at first and her opinion has changed gradually, though she seemed to soften as she acknowledged: "He can be the nicest person ever.

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Gary Busey offended White Dee by exposing himself yesterday (September 7).
The contestant was in the kitchen with Dee, James Jordan and George Gilbey when he was experiencing discomfort with his knee injury.
Attempting to rearrange his leg brace, Gary pulled down his trousers, revealing no underwear. He then sat down on a chair.
James reacted with shock, while Dee was particularly annoyed by what was happening and asked James to sort it out.
George remarked: "What can you do? I'm not a professional. I don't know how to deal with that situation."
Gary tried to explain that his knee had to be fixed, but James responded: "I wear underpants. I don't sit on chairs with my bare bottom.
"That's not right, Gary. And there's ladies in here who shouldn't see your c**k and balls."
Gary shot back: "You exaggerate so much that a therapist would have a ball with you.

In groups of four, the housemates worked a shift in the Big Brother call centre, dealing with tough questions from callers.
White Dee was criticised for sitting "with no make-up on" and looking "like you're chewing a wasp", while her caller told her to smile more and stop following Ricci Guarnaccio around the house. The Benefits Street star accepted the complaint and promised to "certainly try" to deal with the issues.
A fan of Audley Harrison's asked the boxing champion to be more entertaining, explaining that he needed to show his "wonderful personality" more. Audley impressed his caller by seeking guidance on how he could be more entertaining for viewers.
Edele Lynch's caller identified themselves as a "huge, huge fan", but called for a return of the "strong woman" she called her "idol".

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Gary Busey was the centre of yet more arguments yesterday (September 3).
The actor began the day well, telling Big Brother in the Diary Room that he felt "exceptional, wonderful, together, balanced, even" and that it is "wonderful to be where I am now, within myself of truth".
Gary even revealed that he wasn't concerned about being evicted, saying: "If I'm not evicted, it will just go on. And if I'm evicted, I won't really be evicted because my heart and soul will be in the Big Brother house. Big Brother will be in my heart forever and I'm just the messenger of hope, truth and love."
However, some of the housemates were talking less positively about Gary, as Kellie Maloney suggested that he was "playing" all of the housemates and noted: "Days before the eviction and when the cameras are on, he comes to life... he's a born actor.

Audley Harrison, Kellie Maloney, Edele Lynch, Stephanie Pratt, Gary Busey and James Jordan have been nominated for eviction from Celebrity Big Brother on Friday (September 5).
The six housemates will face the public vote, after the group took part in face-to-face nominations following last night's eviction.
Gary received the most nominations, picking up six in total, while Kellie followed with five. Edele had four, James and Audley had two, and Stephanie had one.
Edele did not seem to take the news well, noting incorrectly that she received the same number of nominations as Gary and joking: "I'm not cleaning any of your toilets anymore - you can clean up your own s**t, people!"
White Dee, who nominated Edele because she "needs to be with her kids", later apologised for throwing a vote her way.
Giving her a hug, Dee said: "It just came out wrong, and as a mum, I know myself.

"I'm just me, I'm just a normal person," she said. "I just beat myself up all the time."
As James joked that he is "just a dancer" with a "big gob", Dee admitted that she is insecure but that it is "pointless" trying to be someone else.
Dee's tears returned some time later, as she began to talk to Ricci Guarnaccio and Lauren Goodger about who could be evicted tonight (September 3).
"None of my babies are going... I love you guys," she said, before beginning to sob.

Kellie Maloney has threatened to ''knock'' James Jordan's ''lights out''. The former boxing promoter - who was known as Frank Maloney before he revealed he'd been living as a woman for the past year - has been clashing with the former 'Strictly Come Dancing' professional in the 'Celebrity Big Brother' house. Speaking to her fellow housemate, 'White Dee' Kelly of 'Benefits Street', on the Channel 5 reality series, she said: ''I can't be in the same room as James. ''The more I'm around James, the more I want to knock his lights out.'' The 61-year-old star added that she hoped the public would vote...

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Kellie Maloney has completely lost her patience with James Jordan.
Kellie appeared to spend much of yesterday complaining about the former Strictly pro, beginning at the start of the day when she told Audley Harrison that James has no personality.
She added that he is an "arrogant arsehole", and when Audley acknowledged he has a chip on his shoulder, Kellie joked that it was more like a sack of King Edward potatoes.
Later, Kellie told White Dee that she couldn't be in the same room as James, adding that she wants the public to vote her out and saying: "The more I'm around James, the more I want to knock his lights out."
She also told Lauren Goodger that she wants James to know she doesn't like him, and she clashed with the dancer during a conversation about Lauren's relationship with Ricci.

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Lauren Goodger was accused of leading Ricci Guarnaccio on in the house yesterday (September 1).
The duo have had a confusing relationship so far this series, while Ricci expressed concerns earlier this week that Lauren is "playing games".
Lauren woke up yesterday feeling the effects of the night before - when she got drunk and exposed her breast in the pool - and Edele Lynch advised her that Ricci had been trying to look after her.
However, Lauren's drunken behaviour was the talk of the house as James Jordan revealed: "She tried to jump into bed with me last night in her G-string and I was f**king straight out of the door."
Gary Busey wanted to know if James had "had a chance with Lauren", but James told Lauren about her wardrobe malfunction as George Gilbey said: "Don't worry, Lauren, you've got lovely tits."

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Frenchy caused a stir yesterday when she decided to sunbathe topless.
The model stripped off in the garden - but not all of her fellow celebrities were happy about it.
"When she turns over, I might be sick," George Gilbey complained. "I'd rather see your bells, Dee!"
When Frenchy did indeed turn onto her back, James Jordan remarked that the weather was a bit "nippy" - which Dee couldn't resist changing to "a bit nipply".
However, Frenchy wasn't the only one to expose her breasts yesterday, as Lauren Goodger suffered a wardrobe malfunction while enjoying herself in the pool.
Despite warnings from Ricci Guarnaccio about her swimming costume, the former Towie star couldn't resist jumping in the pool - with eye-opening results.
Ricci appeared unimpressed with the turn of events, choosing to leave the garden as Lauren spotted his bad mood and said: "Okay then.

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Frenchy launched a scathing attack on Ricci Guarnaccio and Lauren Goodger in the Diary Room yesterday.
The model, who had an argument with Lauren over the weekend, told Big Brother that she thinks of Ricci as a "dead fish".
"He's boring," she said, explaining that he's only interesting when he's had a drink. "He doesn't have a personality."
Frenchy also set her sights on Lauren, complaining that she always tells the same story.
"Change the record, it gets really boring," she said. "[Lauren] doesn't have confidence and constantly needs me to reassure her... after a while it gets boring.
"She's a gorgeous girl, she's beautiful and very well-spoken, but personality-wise, I don't have anything in common with her."
Frenchy continued to cause controversy with her housemates later in the day, as she chose to sunbathe topless in the garden.

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Ricci Guarnaccio seemed to be souring on his love interest Lauren Goodger yesterday (August 31) as he accused her of playing games.
The couple's potential romance was the talk of the house in the morning, as White Dee asked Kellie Maloney if she had seen the pair flirting.
"No, not in the way the other two [Stephanie Pratt and George Gilbey] do," she replied. "There's a little bit of chemistry there but Lauren is that sort of girl, I think. Ricci does like her..."
Dee agreed that Lauren has "no interest in him whatsoever" but the pair suggested she hadn't led him on, with Kellie saying: "If they wanted to, they could rival the other two for a romance. The other two is so phoney. I'd hate to see George get hurt. I quite like George."
Later on, Ricci's feelings for Lauren continued to become clear,...

Kellie Maloney has clashed with fellow Celebrity Big Brother housemates Stephanie Pratt and James Jordan.
The latest house drama occurred during a task as Leslie Jordan became a ventriloquist who had to speak for Stephanie.
When housemates were allowed to ask questions, Kellie brought up a row between Stephanie and Audley Harrison, asking why she had called him a "passive-aggressive p***k". Stephanie was left frustrated as Leslie failed to answer as her.
James, who was controlling Angélique "Frenchy" Morgan, then jumped in to defend Stephanie by asking Kellie why she goes to the Diary Room to attempt to win a sympathy vote after nominations, and also by asking why she has threatened to walk on numerous occasions.
Stephanie later contfronted Kellie about the incident. After accusing her of "sh*t-stirring", the Made In Chelsea star remarked: "Frank is back."
Discussing the incident with George Gilbey, Kellie remarked: "I've made another enemy.
