New Wave of Accusations Ignites MeToo Reckoning in France: ‘Women Are Fed Up. The Anger Is Enormous’
France’s film industry is undergoing a new MeToo reckoning, dominating news cycles, policy debates and even the goodie bag of the Cesar Awards’ nominees dinner, which included a flyer headlined, “The cultural sector together against sexist and sexual violence.”
The French #MeToo movement also made its way into the Berlinale, where actor Nora Hamzawi said that director Jacques Doillon’s upcoming film “Third Grade” — in which Hamzawi stars — shouldn’t be released due to the sexual misconduct allegations recently filed against the filmmkaker.
France’s major producers guilds have also issued a statement demanding the National Film Board (Cnc) and the Minister of Culture to put specific guidelines in place. Those demands include the appointment of “experts specialized in the prevention and management of sexual violence to set up a safe environment at the start of every shoot;” additional resources for organizations fighting sexual misconduct; and setting up an...

Suzanna Andler
Benoît Jacquot, whose perennial output was also delayed by the pandemic, turns to Marguerite Duras for inspiration for his next film, Suzanna Andler, based on the famed writer’s 1968 play. Charlotte Gainsbourg (reunites with Jacquot after 2014’s 3 Hearts) headlines the film which is produced by the director’s long-time collaborator Kristina Larsen. Niels Schneider, Nathan Willcocks and Julia Roy complete the cast.
Since the mid-1970s, Jacquot has been a mainstay on the film fest circuit. He’s competed in Cannes once, with 1998’s The School of Flesh, returning to the festival in Un Certain Regard in 2004 with A Tout de Suite and in 2016 as co-director of the documentary Gentleman Rissient (out of competition).…...

There was a minor kerfuffle during the Berlinale press conference for Benoît Jacquot’s “Eva” when a journalist asked star Isabelle Huppert how she achieved such a degree of eroticism in the film without getting nude. “You have a very bizarre idea of eroticism,” came the actress’ withering second-degree burn of a reply.
And, to Huppert’s credit, it was a ridiculous question. Ridiculous because French cinema has spent more than a century illustrating that T&A has precious little to do with screen sensuality, ridiculous because Huppert could make a Haneke movie feel erotic, and ridiculous because Jacquot’s overblown melodrama is a film about people who disguise themselves by how they dress.
A limp, sudsy adaptation of James Hadley Chase’s 1945 novel “Eve” (a potboiler that Joseph Losey once spun into a Jeanne Moreau vehicle of the same name), “Eva” begins with an engaging sequence that instantly sets the...

If the reception to Ewan McGregor’s American Pastoral has shown us anything, it’s this: those who adapt one of the great living authors would be best-advised to go small or, at the very least, head into their endeavor with a bit of experience. Benoît Jacquot is doing both with a big-screen take on Don DeLillo‘s slim and, in all honesty, little-loved 2001 novel The Body Artist. It’d previously been in the hands of Luca Guadagnino, who’d, at various points, cast the likes of Isabelle Huppert, Sigourney Weaver, Denis Lavant, and David Cronenberg, the one man who’s already taken a DeLillo text to the big screen. (Game 6 doesn’t quite count, though it’s a Cosmopolis first draft nevertheless worth seeking out.)

We’re still sulking over the initial plans Luca Guadagnino had for adapting Dom Delillo’s novella The Body Artist back in 2013, a project that fell apart soon after a cast comprised of Isabelle Huppert, Sigourney Weaver, David Cronenberg, and Denis Lavant was announced. Producer Paulo Branco reassembled the package for French director Benoît Jacquot, who re-wrote the screenplay with actress Julia Roy (If You Don’t, I Will, 2014), deciding on a different approach for the material, now featuring notables such as Amalric and Balibar. Jacquot, often an underrated filmmaker, has had a prolific few years following the success of Farewell, My Queen (2012), competing in Venice a year later with 3 Hearts (2014) and popping up in competition at Berlin 2015 with an adaptation of The Diary of a Chambermaid (previously filmed by Jean Renoir and Luis Bunuel).
