We loved The Infinite Noise, the first speculative fiction novel adapted from Lauren Shippen’s popular fictional podcast universe The Bright Sessions. And now we have another standalone literary installment to look forward to bringing us back into the supernatural world. A Neon Darkness tells the dark and twisted origin story of Robert Gorham (better known to Bright Sessions listeners as Damien), the atypical with the power to manipulate people to do his will and share his desires.
The standalone novel won’t hit bookshelves until September, but we’ve got an exclusive first look at the gorgeous cover for the Ya novel, as well as an excerpt. Check it out…
And here is a peak inside A Neon Darkness…
Prologue: The Fire
There are benefits to driving without a map.
This country is sprawling and full of detours. The “Best Specific Local Food Item” here and the “World’s Largest Mundane Object” there.

Exclusive: As the true-crime podcast market continues to heat up, could a musical interlude be the next hot area? That’s the hope of musical theatre writers Brett Ryback, Jeff Luppino-Esposito and Matt Sav, who have teamed with podcast studio Atypical Artists on a Serial-meets-Broadway-style scripted series.
Ryback, who wrote the music and lyrics to stage show Passing Through and Nickelodeon writers Luppino-Esposito and Sav have created In Strange Woods with the help of Atypical Artists, which is run by Lauren Shippen, the creator of audio drama The Bright Sessions.
In Strange Woods tells the coming-of-age story of Peregrine Wells, an 18-year-old girl in Minnesota’s north woods, reeling from the death of her older brother. Ryback, who also acts as narrator, spins a fictional mystery that weaves together investigation and taped interview with a folk-pop score.

Marissa Meyer finishes what she began with Renegades in Supernova, an epic & emotional conclusion to Nova and Adrian's superpowered story.
This article is sponsored by Macmillan Books. All views expressed in the article reflect those of the writer.
It's no secret that it's a great time to be a fan of superhero storytelling. The biggest, most expensive movies in the world are about superheroes, and we're getting to a point in comic book adaptation culture that even some of the medium's more obscure characters are making their way onto TV screens.
But we don't talk enough about how the trend has spilled over into fiction. From Sarah Kuhn's Heroine Complex series to V.E. Schwab's Villains series to Lauren Shippen's recent The Infinite Noise, there are increasing examples of character-driven superpowered stories in the literary world and, like all media, there are ways in which this...

We talked to author Lauren Shippen about adapting science fiction podcast The Bright Sessions into new novel The Infinite Noise.
Superpowered stories tends to focus on the external powers more than the internal when it comes to powers. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry. (Bruce isn't talking about the emotional repercussions of pissing someone off here.)
Enter The Infinite Noise by Lauren Shippen, a novel adaptation—the first in a planned three—of Shippen's award-winning The Bright Sessions podcast. The teen-centric novel follows Caleb, a football player who develops the supernatural ability to feel others' emotions. This is a different kind of coming-of-age superpowered story: one that looks at the unique struggles and strengths of the very internal superpower of hyper-empathy.
As you can imagine, having hyper-empathy in high school,...

Check out this exclusive sneak peek from Lauren Shippen's The Infinite Noise, a queer superhero coming-of-age story.
Mainstream superhero storytelling tends to do better when depicting physical powers than emotional/mental ones, which is one of the many reasons why the premise of Lauren Shippen's upcoming young adult novel, The Infinite Noise, so intrigues me...
Based on Shippen's award-winning podcast, The Bright Sessions, The Infinite Noise follows 16-year-old running back Caleb Michaels who has the supernatural ability to feel other people's emotions. High school is a hard place to have the power of extreme empathy, and classmate Adam is an emotional calm in the storm. Told from both boys points-of-view, The Infinite Noise is a coming-of-age story with a supernatural twist (not to mention a queer love story!), and I can't wait to read it.
