ReviewDirector Ponram seems to think police brutality makes for good comedy. It really doesn’t.Bharathy SingaravelTrailerScreengrabKollywood’s obsession with violent cop heroes may be limitless, but for some of us, our patience has run dry. Vijay Sethupathi stars in Dsp as another run-of-the-mill Tamil cinema police officer who heralds encounter killings as the ultimate justice. We are introduced to his character, Vasco da Gama, in North Madras’s Kasimedu, where he nearly beats to death a caricature ‘rowdy’. But of course, Kollywood, North Madras is the singular location in the whole city where criminality and general villainy can be found, right? The story proceeds erratically between the past and present events of his life as he massacres his way to the revenge he is seeking—the uniform enables his violence, the film implies. If you’re hoping for an explanation as to why Vjs’s character is named after a famed racist coloniser,...

KollywoodIf you're a fan of the Sivakarthikeyan genre - dances with kids, 'follow her' romance, and passable comedy - you may enjoy this one. Sivakarthikeyan plays Seema Raja, a jobless youth (no surprises there), from a zameen family that has ruled over Singampatti. As his sidekick, there's accountant Kanakku (Soori) who has three wives named Jil, Jung, and Juk. Pretty normal for "family films" in Tamil cinema, so take that Bp tablet already. The film doesn't take itself seriously except for the "flashback" portion, that appears to be a fusion of Baahubali and Padmavat (Keerthy Suresh makes a cameo here). So, you should be well advised not to look for logic anywhere. After all, we're speaking...

The past weekend’s Thai Pongal festival – marking the point at which the sun begins its six-month journey northwards through the firmament – has yielded a full crop of Tamil releases. For some while, it looked like the comedy Rajini Murugan might never appear from behind the clouds. The second collaboration between writer-director Ponram and standup Sivakarthikeyan was subject to production delays and worse luck besides: its initial release date coincided with December’s Chennai floods, a moment when those cinemas not underwater were serving as makeshift shelters.
