Comic book artist Lee Moder, who co-created the Courtney Whitmore version of Stargirl with Geoff Johns in 1999, has passed away, according to ComicBook.com and statements from his peers. The web site cited a family friend, who indicated that Moder died quietly at home sometime on or before January 15th. No cause of his death was given. Moder was 53.
A TV series based on the Stargirl character ran for three seasons on the CW, ending last December. DC’s Stargirl followed Courtney and her stepfather Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) as she leads an unlikely group of young heroes to take on the legacy of DC’s very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America. Johns served as showrunner, and executive produced the series with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.
Moder worked in the comics industry for nearly three decades. In that time he drew titles like Legion of Super-Heroes and Wonder Woman at DC.

The CW is losing another show. “Stargirl,” the channel’s teen superhero drama, will conclude with its ongoing third season, IndieWire has confirmed.
The show, which airs on Wednesdays, premiered its third season in August. The final episode will now premiere on December 7.
The news comes shortly after The CW was acquired by station group Nexstar, in a deal that has been accompanied by several cancellations and endings for many of the network’s series. In May, ahead of the official deal, the channel canceled over half of its scripted programming lineup. Nexstar officially took control in October, with plans to retool the famously unprofitable channel to focus on acquired programming and cheaper original series. The change was accompanied by CEO Mark Pedowitz stepping down from his post after more than a decade at the channel.

“Stargirl” will come to an end at The CW with Season 3, Variety has confirmed.
The DC series is currently airing its third season, with the finale set to air on Dec. 7. This is the latest CW scripted series to announce it will come to an end following Nexstar’s completion of its acquisition of The CW in October. It was most recently announced that “Nancy Drew” would end with its fourth season, with both “The Flash” and “Riverdale” also coming to an end. The CW also canceled many of its scripted originals back in May.
“Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons,” said series creator and executive producer Geoff Johns. “With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet,...

Stargirl was fixin’ for a fight in the Season 2 premiere of the CW superhero series, and by the end of the hour, boy did she find one!
But first…. The new season opened with a flashback to “Decades Earlier,” where a young girl named Rebecca was forbidden by her mom from attending a friend’s birthday party across the street. When a (creepy af) little boy named Bruce appeared out of nowhere and goaded Rebecca into ignoring her busy mom, the lass scampered across the street. There, Bruce nudged Rebecca to steal one of the presents piled outside the front door.

While viewership number and box offices may paint a different picture, the all-pervasive Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t for everyone. That appears to include Luke Wilson, who stars in DC’s CW series “Stargirl” as Pat Dugan, aka S.T.R.I.P.E., the stepfather to the title heroine. He’s also, of course, the brother of a certain MCU star, Owen Wilson, who plays Time Variance Authority agent Mobius in Disney+’s “Loki.”
In a recent press conference (via Entertainment Weekly), Luke revealed that he was living with Owen while they were filming their respective TV shows, and the experience was a strange one.
“We shared a house,” Luke told reporters. “I don’t know if you’ve ever lived with anyone in the Marvel universe but odd people. Very, very odd people.” Luke Wilson also (and partially joking) went on to say that he “never did understand...

Not content with currently hitting it out of the park over at Image with Geiger, Johns pitches up with a timely reminder that although Image are his new friends, DC are his long term best buds. This character is probably dearest to John’s heart than any other, as he modelled her on his real life sister Courtney, who tragically died in a plane crash. The CW is continuing to kick-ass with renewals.
The youth-skewing broadcaster has picked up freshman series Kung Fu for a second season and handed a third season of DC’s Stargirl ahead of its sophomore debut.
This comes as the network continues to look for stability in its scripted lineup – bringing the number of renewals for the 2021-22 season to 15 with only The Republic of Sarah, which launches in June, still pending.
The renewal of Kung Fu is not a surprise. The drama kicked off strong with more than 3.5M viewers watching the premiere episode and it had the highest total viewership number for a Wednesday debut in 7 years since The 100 debuted in 2014.
Kung Fu follows a young Chinese American woman, Nicky Shen, played by Olivia Liang, whose quarter-life crisis causes her to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China.

That was epic.
There really are no other words to describe Stargirl Season 1 Episode 13, as the season finale was visually stunning and executed perfectly.
Along with doing a fantastic job in bringing this chapter to a satisfying ending, the new developments introduced at the end of the episode had me clambering on the edge of my seat with excitement.
Whatever comes next is sure to be entertaining.
To start, let's dissect the biggest "surprise" of all: Starman's alive.
Or well, someone who looks exactly like Starman and claims his name is Sylvester Pemberton is alive and well and walking around North Hollywood looking for Pat Dugan.
When characters magically come back from the dead on television -- especially on fantasy and supernatural shows -- we can't be surprised.
After all, there are two rules when it comes to death on TV.
One, no one is ever truly dead unless we see the body,...

One, no one is ever truly dead unless we see the body,...

Stargirl Episode 13
Stargirl’s first season, on the whole, is one of the strongest ever attempted in the DC television universe. There’s so much to love about this series, from its sunny, optimistic vibe and charming characters to its willingness to push boundaries, trust its audience, and make bold storytelling decisions. That its Season 1 finale doesn’t entirely stick the landing is probably expected – honestly, most of the Arrowverse shows never do finales terribly well anyway – but the emotional moments are as top-notch as ever, and “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two” does a decent enough job of tying up loose ends and putting some intriguing new pieces in place for Season 2.
The sudden return of Joel McHale’s Sylvester Pemberton will probably drive the bulk of conversation following this episode – whether he’s the real Starman, back from the (presumed) dead,...

Stargirl Episode 11
The idea that heroes can come from anywhere isn’t exactly a new theme in comic book movies and television. We can all wear the mask, right? Or wield the sword. Or the staff, or the hammer, if we’re worthy of it.
Stargirl has vaguely touched on this theme already – after all, it’s not like Yolanda or Beth are exactly legacy heroes or anything, and Henry King still chose the light in spite of who his father is. But the trope has never played out so directly and so heart-wrenchingly as it does in “Shining Knight,” an emotional hour that sees Courtney meet her father, who isn’t Starman.
Instead, Sam Kurtis is a run-of-the-mill deadbeat, a man who pays lip service to the idea of finally getting to know the daughter he abandoned, but only until he manages to coax...

It was not DC’s Stargirl in and of itself but series boss Geoff Johns that sold film vet/onetime Roadies manager Luke Wilson on the superhero series.
Speaking with TVLine in the Q&a below, Wilson shares how a terrific first meeting with Johns (who based the Courtney Whitmore comic book character on his late sister) — coupled with Pat Dugan’s role as the hapless “equipment manager” for a team of Golden Age heroes — drew him to the freshman series, which recently got renewed for Season 2.

The CW has had some great success with TV shows based on DC Comics characters. The DC's Stargirl series was created for DC Universe and episodes are released on that streaming service first. Could this strategy negatively affect the traditional ratings? Will DC's Stargirl be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Stargirl continues to deliver some of the deepest cuts in DC Universe TV history to fans each week. Not only that, it does it with not a hint of irony about it, even when it’s presenting characters who, to modern eyes, might appear a little bit hokey if presented in their original form. The latest example of that comes with their revelation of the Seven Soldiers of Victory, a relatively obscure group of Golden Age superheroes who fought alongside the Justice Society of America back in the day.
The DC Comics version of the Seven Soldiers of Victory first appeared in 1941’s Leading Comics #1 by Mort Weisinger (who went on to become a legendary editor of the Superman titles during the Silver Age) and Mort Meskin. Having seen the success of the Justice Society in the pages of All-Star Comics, it was clear that...

The CW delivered some good news to Stargirl on Monday:
It has renewed the superhero drama for a second season!
A renewal for the drama series is not surprising, but the latest development is:
Stargirl Season 2 will be exclusive to The CW!
The series started its life as a DC Universe origiinal, with The CW taking broadcast rights to the show and airing it linearly the day after episodes are made available on the streaming service.
It's unclear whether this means there will be a budget cut for the sophomore run, but we likely won't know until the episodes actually hit the air.
Stargirl Season 1, airing Tuesdays at 8/7c, is currently averaging around 1 million total viewers and a 0.23 rating among adults 18-49.
For a show airing on The CW during the summer, those are stellar ratings.
In fact, Stargirl is the network's third most-watched series this season, coming in behind The Flash and Supernatural,...

“Stargirl” has been renewed for a second season at The CW.
With the renewal, The CW and its digital platforms will be the exclusive in-season home of the series starting with its second season. Season 2 will not stream on the show’s original home at DC Universe. It was announced ahead of the series premiere that episodes of the show would air on CW the day after their streaming debut on Dcu.
“Stargirl” follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) as she moves to Blue Valley, Nebraska after her mother remarries Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson). There, she inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. It also stars Amy Smart, Trae Romano, Cameron Gellman, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Meg DeLacy, Neil Jackson, Jake Austin Walker, Christopher James Baker and Hunter Sansone.

DC’s Stargirl has been renewed for a second season, which comes as little surprise given the superhero series’ warm reception. The twist is that The CW — not DC Universe — ordered the pickup, because starting with Season 2 it will be the exclusive in-season home for the show.
Meaning, Stargirl Season 2 episodes will first air on The CW, and then land on the network’s free, ad-supported streaming platforms the day after. Sources say there are no plans for the second season to stream on DC Universe, which of course hosts all kinds of content beyond original TV series but does...

Nine years ago in Blue Valley, a young boy named Rick (Cameron Gellman) is woken up in the middle of the night by his parents, Rex and Wendi, and told they have to leave and Rick’s uncle, Matt (Adam Aalderks), will be watching him for the foreseeable future. We aren’t told what the emergency is that is causing Rick’s parents to suddenly leave, but it’s severe enough that Rex sends a special package, including his private journal, to Pat Dugan.
Upon arrival, Wendi’s brother Matt isn’t happy that he has to take over as the parent to Rick but Wendi, tells him that he is there only choice and they need him. I guess the $50,000 that Rex and Wendi leaves Matt helps as well.

Stargirl is the most laid-back and unique superhero series to come along in sometime and while there are a few bumps in the road, it’s a fun show to watch.
What Happened This Week
The series starts ten years ago, it was the Golden Era of superheroes with the Justice Society, which includes Hourman, Starman, and Dr. Midnight, protecting the world from the evil villains led by Brainwave (Christopher Baker) and his own band of evil-doers, the Injustice Society of America (not very clever). An epic battle of good versus evil is raging as Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), aka Starman’s sidekick Stripesy, arrives at a green glowing mansion and upon entering, finds the Justice Society being beaten handily by Brainwave and society of villains. A year ago, Pinar Toprak made history by becoming the first female composer to score a movie that made better than $150 million at the box office. “Captain Marvel” ultimately took in more than $425 million domestically.
This week, Toprak returns with music for another female superhero: “Stargirl,” toplining Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, a Middle America high school student determined to follow in the footsteps of her late father, Starman (originally a 1940s comic book hero). It debuts May 18 on DC Universe and migrates to The CW broadcast network the next day.
“From ‘Captain Marvel’ to ‘Krypton’ [another comic book series Toprak scored], I knew Pinar’s work very well,” co-creator and producer Geoff Johns tells Variety. “The creative connection was instant. Pinar is as passionate about superheroes as she is about music. She not only understood the tonal intention of ‘Stargirl’; she added an entirely new layer to the character and series.”

It didn't take long for me to fall in love with the characters of DC's Stargirl. I've always been a fan of superheroes; in fact, I've cosplayed a few over the years at various comic conventions. That being said, I've never really considered myself a DC fan. That is until I discovered Doom Patrol. What I like about Doom Patrol is the same thing that I love about Stargirl; the quirkiness that comes with a lovable group of misfits or outcasts.
In the first episode, we're introduced to the original Justice Society of America, precursor to the Justice League, as they're being destroyed by the Injustice Society of America - both of whose names are relics of the early age of comics. It's in Starman's (Joel McHale) last moments that he bequeaths his cosmic staff to his sidekick Stripesy, aka Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), in the hopes that he can find someone worthy.

This Stargirl review contains No spoilers!
The CW has long had a light stranglehold on TV superheroes. Since the debut of Arrow eight years ago, the channel has excelled at bringing DC Comics heroes to the screen in a thoroughly enjoyable, generally family friendly fashion. DC Universe launched in 2018, bringing more niche stars to the roster including the very R-rated Titans and the strange, crude, and lovable Doom Patrol. Stargirl is the first of DC Universe’s shows to make the transition to The CW, with the show essentially simulcast, hitting the DC streamer one day earlier than it hits the network. Though its genesis began with the darker world of DC Universe, Stargirl is a dream fit for The CW and for this lifelong DC Comics fan is easily the best of their offerings yet.

DC’s Stargirl is ready to shine on assorted screens, more than two decades after the young superhero made her DC Comics debut.
Geoff Johns, the veteran comic books scribe and screenwriter who recently served as DC Entertainment’s Cco for a stretch, created Stargirl aka Courtney Whitmore back in 1999, inspired by his late sister, who had died in the Twa Flight 800 explosion. With the character’s most prominent live-action incarnation, Johns’ vision takes on new meaning, in a series that is light, lively and abundant with star-spangled, family-friendly thrills.

Brec Bassinger lights up streamer DC Universe on May 18 and then on the CW the next day in DC’s Stargirl. Also on May 18, the long-awaited small-screen version of Snowpiercer with Daveed Diggs and Jennifer Connelly hits the tracks on TNT.
Long review short and with some blood on those tracks, Snowpiercer is...

Brec Bassinger is definitely one to watch. With the premiere of Stargirl, the 20-year-old actress has taken the titular role and made it her own. The Texas native is best known for her role of unlikely quarterback Bella Dawson on Nickelodeon's Bella and the Bulldogs, though she's also had roles in a handful of other shows including The Goldbergs and The Haunted Hathaways, as well as movies like 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. Both her portrayals of Bella and Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl share the idea that the characters are taking on a role traditionally played by a man.
Stargirl is certainly a more obscure superhero than say Supergirl or Wonder Woman, but she isn't any less heroic. Bassinger expertly portrays the teenage girl who takes on a little more than she can probably handle. After all, how could she have foreseen the ties her stepdad Pat Dugan had to superhero Starman?...

DC’s Stargirl is here to brighten up the sometimes-brooding superhero scene with a weekly, multiplatform rollout on DC Universe (starting May 18) and The CW (premiering Tuesday, May 19). But when all is said and done, will the gung-ho teen’s biggest adversary be oh-so-serious supervillains?
Brec Bassinger (of Hulu’s All Night) headlines the series as Courtney Whitmore, a spry teen whose life in Los Angeles is upended when her widowed mom, Barbara (Felicity‘s Amy Smart), remarries and in turn relocates them to super-quaint Blue Valley, Nebraska. Courtney is no insta-fan of stepdad Pat Dugan (Roadies‘ Luke Wilson) or...

The next DC Universe original live action series is Stargirl! Not as edgy as Titans, nor as weird as our beloved Doom Patrol, Stargirl looks like a celebration of superheroics, and one that will explore the legacy of the first team of heroes in comic book history, the Justice Society of America. Stargirl will roll out in May on both the DC Universe streaming service and on The CW.
The series stars Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, who will take on the mantle of Stargirl. Luke Wilson plays her stepfather, former kid sidekick and current pilot of the gigantic S.T.R.I.P.E robot, Pat Dugan. They’re joined by Amy Smart (Varsity Blues) as Courtney’s mother, Barbara Whitmore. But really, if you’re talking about Stargirl, you’re also talking about the Justice Society of America, and this series will absolutely feature more characters carrying on...
