This premiered last year and will be available to watch on VOD this fall. A battle-shocked veteran goes on a road trip to fulfill a promise to a fallen comrade — and realizes he must confront his own demons to reach his destination. Featuring flashbacks to his time on the battlfield, while he's on his journey through the back roads of America. The powerful indie drama arrives in theaters in November briefly before being available at home. Writer, director, and producer Nicole Mejia has signed with A3 Artists Agency for representation.
Mejia’s directorial debut feature “A Place in the Field” was acquired for theatrical distribution by Lionsgate and Grindstone and is slated to arrive in 2023. The drama tells the story of Army Veteran, Gio Scuderi, who struggles to cope after the suicide of his best friend, Herbert Davis. After receiving a package from his old pal, he sets out on a road trip across the American Southwest where he encounters people from all walks of life. Don Dipetta, Khorri Ellis, Xochitl Portillo and Bluesmon Del Vecchio penned the film. Dipetta, Mejia and Heliya Alam produced the picture.
She is the inaugural Directing Fellow for the Adelante Lab, a television shadowing fellowship created by the Latinx House in partnership with Netflix, Sundance and Shondaland. Her short film, “Mancha,” was awarded the Laliff/Netflix Fellowship.

Exclusive: Lionsgate’s Grindstone Entertainment Group has acquired North American rights to A Place in the Field, a drama infused with magical realism, which marks the feature directorial debut of 2021 AFI graduate Nicole Mejia.
Shot safely over the course of the pandemic, A Place in the Field follows Army Veteran Gio Scuderi (Green Book’s Don Dipetta) who, after receiving a package and a letter from an old friend, sets out on a journey across the American Southwest to fulfill a promise made long ago during his deployment. The film tackling the issue of Ptsd in veterans through a female filmmaker’s lens is billed as a road trip story about loss, friendship, perseverance, and the will to carry on.
Dipetta, Khorri Ellis, Bluesmon Del Vecchio and Xochitl Portillo-Moody wrote the pic, which made its world premiere at the 2022 Santa Barbara Film Festival. Dipetta and Mejia produced alongside Heliya Alam.

Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema Confirmed as Director of Photography for Jordan Peele’s ‘Nope’
Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema is on board director of photography for Jordan Peele’s new thriller “Nope,” Variety can confirm.
The film, which recently wrapped principal photo, was shot on Kodak film, including 65mm film in IMAX format. Other than the poster’s tagline of its original release on Peele’s Twitter, little to no information has been made public about the upcoming film.
Hoytema’s credits include “Dunkirk,” “Tenet,” “Interstellar” and “Her.”
As previously announced, Peele writes and directs and Daniel Kaluuya will star, alongside Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun. Recently announced cast members include “Euphoria” actor Barbie Ferreira, “The Oa” star Brandon Perea and Michael Wincott.
The Universal Pictures film is scheduled to debut in theaters on July 22, 2022, and Peele is producing alongside Ian Cooper of Monkeypaw Productions.
