We’re finally saying farewell to 2023 and kicking off a whole new year of movies. Though the box office remains all over the place, with presumably guaranteed blockbusters failing to take off and “Barbie” becoming a cultural juggernaut, 2023 gave us a lot of theatrical surprises.
But what does 2024 have in store? Right off the bat, sequels. A lot of sequels! Intellectual property remains the lay of the land and there will be plenty of continuations. Tim Burton will take us back to 1988 with his “Beetlejuice” sequel while Ridley Scott will return us to ancient Rome with “Gladiator 2.” We’ll also be getting a slew of potential franchise films. Jon M. Chu takes us back to Oz with “Wicked: Part 1” and Denis Villeneuve returns to the spice-riddled world of Arrakis with the highly anticipated follow-up to “Dune.” And don’t forget the “Mean Girls” musical.

Over the course of his years in the spotlight, Elvis Presley’s appearance and behavior drew criticism. When he rose to prominence in the 1950s, many worried that Elvis was a negative influence on young people. Though this concern lessened over time, particularly as other, more controversial groups rose to prominence, Elvis’ appearance still rankled some people. This included the person Elvis saw as the greatest living American, J. Edgar Hoover.
According to an FBI agent, J. Edgar Hoover wouldn’t have liked Elvis’ appearance
In 1970, Elvis visited the FBI headquarters in Washington D.C. with the hopes of seeing Hoover.

Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" takes a true-crime narrative and flips it on its head. The movie, based on author David Grann's nonfiction book of the same name, debuted in theaters on Oct. 20 and tells the true story of the murders of Osage Indians and the FBI investigation that finally identified some of the culprits. The involvement of the FBI - which was then just called the Bureau of Investigation - is a major part of the book; Grann's tome is subtitled "The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI." The book is a well-crafted true-crime story, and finding out who committed the murders is a shocking twist, but Scorsese takes a different perspective on the same material.
The identity of the killers is immediately apparent in the film. The FBI doesn't come into the picture until the movie's last act.

The identity of the killers is immediately apparent in the film. The FBI doesn't come into the picture until the movie's last act.

This article contains spoilers for "Killers of the Flower Moon."
Martin Scorsese's new film "Killers of the Flower Moon," based on true events, takes place in the Osage Nation just after World War I. The Osage people have a vast reservoir of oil on their land and have, very quickly, become some of the wealthiest people on the planet.
The movie mostly surrounds a man named Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio), a weak-willed former soldier who is just looking for a job. Ernest falls into the employ of his uncle, William King Hale (Robert De Niro), a real-life local politician who claimed to speak for the Osage people and to be a friend of the community, but who was in fact bilking the community for their money, murdering its citizens, and doing everything in his power to rearrange Osage wealth so that it flowed toward white men. Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese is no stranger to bringing true stories to life. His latest movie, "Killers of the Flower Moon," is based on the nonfiction book of the same name by David Grann, which details the disturbing, mysterious deaths of over 60 Osage people in Oklahoma in the 1920s, a period that was later deemed "The Reign of Terror."
The string of murders of the Osage people garnered widespread coverage across the country, and sparked an investigation by the Bureau of Investigation (Boi), a predecessor to the FBI. And yet, this brutal part of US history has rarely been explored in literature and school curriculum.
Actor JaNae Collins, who portrays the character Reta in the film, explained to Insider, "The story shows how racism and a general indifference toward Native lives allowed a genocidal land grab to happen and how a conspiracy of silence then prevented it from becoming part of our collective history.

In Christopher Nolan's new film "Oppenheimer," a biography of one of the chief architects of the atomic bomb, Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a real-life politician who spent a portion of the McCarthy era becoming increasingly suspicious of Communists in the American political system. He launched a campaign against Oppenheimer years after the invention of the bomb, hoping to have the scientist's security clearance revoked. Strauss, in public, claimed to hate Oppenheimer because of palpable Communist ties and sentiments he had expressed in sympathy with the Communist party. Nolan's film, however, posits that Strauss was hoping to pillory and ostracize Oppenheimer for personal reasons, having been humiliated by the scientist at a congressional hearing years before.
The Strauss character is vital to "Oppenheimer," as he seems to serve as a stand-in for American politics as they have come to be in 2023. Nolan seems to point out that many...

The movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestseller "It Ends With Us" is on its way. Filming officially kicked off in May, and fans started to get glimpses of what's in store in the form of behind-the-scenes pictures of Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, and Brandon Sklenar in character in Hoboken, NJ. Though production was paused in May due to the ongoing WGA strike, on July 7, Sony announced the film will be heading to theaters in early 2024.
The release date comes weeks after Hoover defended the movie's casting and the costumes - which some fans reacted strongly to when they saw the first images from set - and promised they were going to be "so happy" with the final film.

The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel “It Ends With Us” has set Feb. 9, 2024 as its theatrical release date despite its halted production in the wake of the WGA writers’ strike.
The Columbia and Wayfarer Studios film will star Blake Lively as Lily Bloom, a Boston resident who finds an unexpected kindred spirit in neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni). Their relationship takes some twists and turns, and Lily’s high school love interest Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar) comes back into the picture to complicate things further.
According to a Deadline report from June’s shutdown, less than half the movie has been shot. Filming is paused until the completion of the writers’ strike following the production’s failure to persuade the guild last month that Wayfarer Studios’ cofinancing of the project made it an indie film, which would have allowed it to continue filming within the strike’s guidelines.

Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon is the latest turn in a long motion picture tradition of pilfering FBI case files for screen scenarios. Originally, Hollywood coveted the validation of the bureau (“based on actual FBI case histories!”) and the personal imprimatur of its lord high ruler, J. Edgar Hoover (who in 1945 actually read life insurance commercials for NBC radio’s This Is Your FBI). Today, it often takes cues without the official stamp of the FBI shield. Either way, the two American institutions have enjoyed a profitable relationship.
Created in 1908 within the Department of Justice as the Bureau of Investigation and formally branded with the trademark initials in 1935, the FBI grew up during the first wave of electronic age media and took full advantage of the coincidence. In a conversation with Today’s Jenna Bush Hager at Hoover’s Book Bonanza festival in Texas, the author shared details about the upcoming adaptation, saying that the choices fans have been concerned about were her decision.
One thing fans seem unhappy with is Lively and Baldoni’s casting as leads Lily and Ryle, respectively, because in the book Lily is 23 and Ryle is 30, while Lively is 35 and Baldoni is 39. Hoover explained that she wanted to age the characters up in the movie in an effort to correct a mistake she made in the book.

Richard Dreyfuss criticized the Academy Awards’ new representation and inclusion standards for Best Picture nominees going into effect in 2024 during an interview on Friday for PBS’ Firing Line with Margaret Hoover.
“They make me vomit,” the Oscar winner said in response to Hoover’s query regarding the upcoming eligibility requirement. He emphasized film as “an art form,” which to him, means “no one should be telling me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest, most current idea of what morality is. What are we risking? Are we really risking hurting people’s feelings? You can’t legislate that.” Dreyfuss then offered his own, alternative solution, saying, “You have to let life be life. I’m sorry, I don’t think there is a minority or majority in the country that has to be catered to like that.”
He continued by praising the late Laurence Olivier...

Just “another bad week” for Donald Trump, Jimmy Kimmel joked Thursday night, as a new audio recording of a phone call the former president made to Georgia election officials pressuring them to overturn the 2020 election results has surfaced.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that a grand jury heard the recording between Trump and the late Georgia House Speaker David Ralston. In the recording, Trump pushed for the speaker to call a special session to overturn President Joe Biden’s win in Georgia.
This revelation of a third audio recording wrote the jokes themselves for Kimmel’s monologue.
“Basically, Trump tried to order the presidency over the phone like it was a stuffed crust pizza,” Kimmel said.
Kimmel mentioned this might be the last week of Trump being an “un-indicted man,” as the former president is facing legal challenges in New York, as well. The Manhattan district attorney’s office is investigating...
