A trio of local films released in time for the Chuseok holiday season dominated the South Korean box office over the latest weekend.
Comedy fantasy “Dr Cheon and the Lost Talisman” dominated. It earned $5.98 million between Friday and Sunday with a more than 48% market share. Since its release on Wednesday (and including previews from last week) it has a cumulative total of $8.37 million.
It stars the ever-appealing Gang Dong-won in the role of a sorcerer in a film that mixes comedy, action, fist-fights and exorcisms.
A length or two behind was “Road to Boston,” a nationalistic sports drama about underdog Korean marathon runners more than half a century ago. Directed by one Kang Je-gyu, of the pioneers of the Korean patriotic spectacle genre, the film shot before Covid and has jogging on the spot ever since, waiting for its moment to surge to the front. (Welcome to Under the Radar, a column where we spotlight specific movies, shows, trends, performances, or scenes that caught our eye and deserved more attention ... but otherwise flew under the radar. In this edition: "Return to Seoul" makes its case for Best Actress, "Broker" offers some perspective, and "All That Breathes" reminds us never to underestimate the narrative power of documentaries.)
As much as some may roll their eyes at the pomp and circumstance of awards season, the end of February and the beginning of Oscars March Madness makes it feel even sillier for cynics to pretend like the Academy Awards and other buzzy awards shows don't really matter. All throughout the last month, nine of the 10 Best Picture nominees were playing in theaters nationwide, giving audiences a chance to experience the highlights of 2022's cinematic "canon" for themselves. And you know what? It paid off.

What could be more heartless than selling abandoned babies? Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Broker asks just that, and against all odds, finds a way to understand how people could behave that way. It’s the Japanese writer-director’s first feature shot in South Korea, having most recently worked in France for his previous film La Vérité. Broker stars Song Kang-ho as Sang-hyeon, a tailor in debt to the mob, and Gang Dong-won as his younger business partner Dong-soo, an orphan. Using Dong-soo’s professional connection to a local church, the two begin covertly snatching babies from the building’s baby box, which people use to anonymously […]

Song Kang-ho is easily one of the most globally recognized Korean actors working today. His lead role in the Academy Award-winning 2019 film "Parasite" earned him international acclaim, but I have been a fan of his for years. He often plays likable characters that make questionable choices, as he did in Bong Joon-ho's earlier films, "Memories of Murder" and "The Host." And thankfully, he also steals the show in Hirokazu Kore-eda's newest film, "Broker."
His character, Sang-hyun, runs a dry-cleaning service by day and brokers illegal adoptions for abandoned children by night. Being a broker earns him and his partner, Dong-soo (Gang Dong-won), a small fee. At the same time, the pair try to make sure the babies end up in good homes and provide them with a better life than they would have in an orphanage. Sang-hyun also struggles with parenting his own daughter, who lives with her mother.

Does everything under the label of cinema has to be completely original? Of course not, because otherwise we would not be able to enjoy precious little thing called genre. Genre works on the terms of archetypes, and, for added bonus, if we are lucky, it innovates or even creates them. “Golden Slumber” directed by Noh Dong-seok works as a stellar example: it is hardly original, but it is well-made and fun to watch. After a successful stretch in theatres world-wide, especially in East Asia, it is being shown at Florence Korea Film Festival.
“Golden Slumber” is screening at Florence Korea Film Fest
It is a recognizable riff on the trope called “wrong man wanted”, with our unlikely hero Kim Gun-woo being framed for assassination of a leading presidential candidate. Otherwise, he is a happy-go-lucky delivery guy who became a minor celebrity for being a model citizen and saving a K-Pop star from mugging,...

At the moment, in Korea, there aren’t many stars that shine brighter or hotter than Gang Dong-won. The leading man of more than 20 features creates frenzies everywhere he goes, as proven by his appearance to receive the Star Asia award at the New York Asian Film Festival. Gang spoke with me about his featured film, Vanishing Time, and his upcoming films, director Kim Jee-woon’s Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade and director Jang Joon-hwan’s 1987. The Lady Miz Diva: Vanishing Time is a very interesting film with fairytale-like qualities. What was your sense of the projects when you first read the script? Gang Dong-won: The first time I read the script, I was making a movie called A Violent Prosecutor. When...

Woochi: The Demon Slayer begins very mythically in 1509 with a trio of Taoist wizards (a Korean three stooges) accidentally releasing an army of shape-shifting goblins, losing the magic flute that can seal them away, and generally ruining the life of the Archgod who’d just spent 3000 days sealing the goblins away.
Gang Dong-Won plays the title character of Jeon Woo Chi whose quest is to become the most powerful wizard in Korea, no matter if he upsets his master or the King. Woochi is aided in his adventures by dog turned human (and sometimes horse) Chorangyi, played with great comedic skills by Yoo Hae-Jin. Woochi ends stumbling upon the prophetic pipe and through the manipulations of demon hunting wizard Hwadam, he and his dog end up sealed within scrolls for 500 years.

In the January 2016 Box Office Report we talked about the lack of block buster movies during January and how this affected Korean Film Admissions. But things have changed with the release of “A Violent Prosecutor” the debut film from Lee Il-Hyeong. This crime-comedy features Hwang Jung-min, Gang Dong-won, Lee Sung-min, Park Sung-woong, along with other great actors.
The film was released on Wednesday February 3rd. On it’s debut night it managed to attract 526,000 spectators and later during the Chinese New Year long weekend (Feb. 5th until 10th) it was seen by 5.3 million. The biggest night was on February 9th when it got 1.1 million admissions.
Since the release the film has passed the 8 million mark and managed to get into the Top 20 most watched films in the history of Korea Cinema (Ranked #17 with 8.209.116 spectators). We are only half way into February but this could be one of the most watched films this year.

The first teaser trailer has arrived for the Japanese remake of 2010 South Korean film Haunters, starring Gang Dong-Won & Ko Soo. Not only does the new movie star fan favourite Tatsuya Fujiwara (Battle Royale), but it also marks the return of Hideo Nakata (Ringu). Now obviously, it's been a long time since Hideo Nakata had a big hit, with each successive movie proving more and more disappointing, but surely it's about time the Japanese horror maestro had a return to form? Either way, we'll be keeping a close eye on this one. Filming began in July 2013, and a release date is pencilled in for May 30th 2014 back home. Synopsis: A man (Tatsuya Fujiwara) possesses a special ability to manipulate others with just his eyes. Because of this special ability, he killed his abusive father and was abandoned by his mother. He now lives a lonely life in the dark side of a city.
