The Berlin Film Festival has unveiled a promising competition lineup for its upcoming edition, peppered with prestige star-driven titles such as the New York-set “La Cocina” with Rooney Mara, sci-fi drama “Another End” pairing Gael García Bernal and Renate Reinsve and its opening film “Small Things Like These” starring “Oppenheimer” protagonist Cillian Murphy.
As is customary, political elements play a prominent role. But the complete Berlinale roster revealed on Monday by artistic director Carlo Chatrian and executive director Mariëtte Rissenbeek – following previous announcements in past weeks – makes for the fest’s strongest selection in recent memory in terms of heft and ensures a rich red carpet following the Hollywood strikes hiatus.
Rissenbeek and Chatrain started the press conference with a statement on the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. “Festivals provide a space for artistic expression and enable peaceful dialogue. They are places of encounter and exchange and contribute to international understanding.

A chance meeting at a New York City hotel brought together multi-award-winning actor Gael García Bernal and Roger Ross Williams, an Academy Award-winning director who wanted to discuss Mexico’s Luchadores Exóticos, specifically trailblazer Saúl Armendáriz, better known as Cassandro.
Luchadores Exóticos are male wrestlers who performed in drag in the ring, who at the start of the movement in the 1940s were just a form of entertainment and didn’t necessarily reflect the performer’s sexual orientation. They would usually fight with macho male wrestlers who were closer to heels than heroes who would most often win the match.
The film, currently available to stream via Prime Video, tells the courageous story of real-life wrestler Cassandro and his journey of self-love and acceptance while breaking barriers for wrestlers everywhere. But back to how the story came to be begins with García Bernal and Williams chatting in the Big Apple.

Lucha culture may seem like an unlikely path for queer liberation, but that's only if you don't know the real-life story of Saúl Armendáriz, the "exótico" who turned wrestling in Mexico and north of the border upside down. He's the subject of the new Amazon film "Cassandro," played by Gael García Bernal; the movie also features Bad Bunny and Roberta Colindrez. It follows Armendáriz as he finds self-acceptance and uses his example to nudge Mexico into becoming more accepting.
The film's star power echoes its subject, showing how celebrities can normalize LGBTQ+ identities in the ring and out. Bad Bunny is perhaps the most influential Latino of his generation. García Bernal has been making waves as a well-respected actor for decades. And Colindrez, from "Vida" and "A League of Her Own," while lesser known, is beloved in the queer community. Gael García Bernal transformed into an iconic gay amateur wrestler, luchador Saúl Armendáriz, for “Cassandro,” based on Armendáriz’s legacy as the “Liberace of Lucha Libre.”
“Cassandro” follows Armendáriz as he upends not just the macho wrestling world but also his own life. The film is based on a true story, with “Life, Animated” Oscar winner Roger Ross Williams directing from a script he co-wrote with David Teague. The real-life Armendáriz served as a consultant on the film.
In addition to Bernal, Roberta Colindrez, Perla de la Rosa, Joaquín Cosío, and Raúl Castillo also star, with with special appearances from El Hijo del Santo and Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio.
Director Williams previously collaborated with Armendáriz for 2016 Prime Video documentary short “The Man Without a Mask.” Williams was inspired to fictionalize Armendáriz’s story to showcase the dichotomy of macho Mexican culture along with Armendáriz’s fandom.

When childhood friends Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna starred in the steamy Mexican drama “Y tu mamá también” in 2002, they spent a year traveling the globe, attracting Hollywood attention and dreaming of the future. “We were always fantasizing about what’s next,” said Luna, now 43, in a Zoom interview from his home in Madrid. “We hoped one day we could own a soccer team. That hasn’t happened. But everything else, we managed to achieve.”
Those plans included starting their own production company and a film festival (the itinerant documentary festival Ambulante). They didn’t, however, have anything to do with “Star Wars” or superhero movies.
Yet with Luna starring in the Disney+ “Star Wars” spin-off “Andor” in the same year that García Bernal makes his MCU debut in the Disney+ medium-length feature “Werewolf by Night,” they have arrived at a turning point on their winding journey through popular...

ƒmovieMexico’s Alfonso Herrera, best known for his role as the impetuous nephew looking to usurp his drug lord uncle in “Ozark” and as a former member of the wildly popular band Rbd and its TV series “Rebelde,” has joined the cast of “Tesis sobre una domesticación,” a movie adaptation of the multi-awarded novel of trans actress-scribe Camila Sosa Villada.
Now shooting in Argentina, “Tesis…” is a co-production between Argentina’s Laura Huberman, Ramiro Pavón and Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna’s Mexico City-based La Corriente del Golfo.
“Tesis sobre una domesticación” (“Thesis on a Domestication”) relates the story of a successful trans actress (played by Sosa Villalda) and her gay lawyer husband who adopt a child, defying Argentina’s conservative society to form their own family unit. Gay luchador Saúl Armendáriz is an LGBTQ icon, bringing much-needed representation that changed the lives of many folks around the world. Roger Ross Williams’ Cassandro brings that story to the silver screen to provide a deeper look into the man behind the makeup. The screenplay that he wrote alongside David Teague plays it a bit too safe by biopic tropes, especially considering the rulebreaker that it chronicles the life of.

In 2016, documentarian Roger Ross Williams made a short film about Saúl Armendáriz, an American-born, openly gay wrestler known as Cassandro, who was nicknamed the "Liberace of Lucha Libre." Seven years later, Williams explores the same subject in his first scripted feature "Cassandro," this time with "Y tu mamá también" and "Werewolf By Night" actor Gael García Bernal in the lead role. The result is a steadily entertaining character piece, full of impressive lucha libre sequences and anchored by a strong lead performance from García Bernal.
As the movie opens, Saúl prepares to wrestle in a makeshift ring in an auto parts shop in Juárez, Mexico. His Lucha Libre character is El Topo, a boring henchman who gets pummeled by Gigántico, the brutish local favorite. Saúl likes his work but yearns for better storylines and more exciting matches. Gigántico, he says, has "no poetry," no sense of showmanship. He wants to...

At once hypermasculine and flamboyant, Mexican lucha libre has for long been a popular form of entertainment for the masses. An escape from the burdens of poverty and real violence, the spectacle features brightly clad heroes known as técnicos who personify the forces of good. Their adversaries, the rudos, play easily recognizable bad guys one can also cheer for. Their duels inside the ring display as much artistry as they do physical prowess.
In this larger-than-life performance of testosterone-fueled fracas, of bodies flying through the air, choreographed uppercuts, and arranged victories; the emergence of gay wrestler Saúl Armendáriz (stage name: Cassandro) in the 1980s, came as a shockwave against homophobia. Deceptively delicate in appearance, reclaiming stereotypes with colorful defiance,...

"Werewolf by Night" is a real departure from the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Released as "A Marvel Studios Special Presentation," the short and sweet 52-minute feature felt like a blast from the past. First-time director and acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino crafts a comic book story that feels like a love letter to the Universal Monster pictures of old. From the black and white cinematography to the "cigarette burns" on the "print" of the film, the project's aesthetic has everything you'd expect from a horror film. While it's definitely a lot more restrained than typical horror projects, there is still plenty of bloody violence that the MCU hasn't seen before. At the center of it is Elsa Bloodstone, played excellently by Laura Donnelly.
Elsa's character is the "final girl" of "Werewolf by Night," a capable hunter ostracized by the monster hunting community and her own family. Donnelly brought a snarky...

Marvel fans tuning in to “Werewolf by Night” Friday on Disney+ may be surprised when they read the director’s name as the end titles roll.
It’s Michael Giacchino, who is far better known as the Oscar- and Emmy-winning composer of “Up” and “Lost,” not to mention such other high-profile, big-grossing films as “The Batman” and the last three entries in the “Spider-Man” franchise.
But, as Giacchino reminds us, he’s been behind the camera since he was a youngster in Edgewater Park, N.J. “I love making movies,” he says. “I’ve loved it since I was 9 years old. That’s what it was about, gathering every kid in the neighborhood and creating movies in my parents’ backyard.”
He later attended New York’s School of Visual Arts, and while his career ultimately took him into music – scoring such popular films as “The Incredibles,” two “Mission: Impossible” films,...

At this moment, no streamer is having more fun with its combination of boundless programming real estate, boundless money and boundless IP than Disney+. Whether it’s six-hour commercials — err… “documentaries” — for Disney-adjacent properties or five-minute animated shorts built around various beloved characters, it’s never entirely clear when the thing premiering on Disney+ is going to be an ongoing series, limited series, feature-length movie or nebulously unspecified “special.”
In that latter category, Disney+ dropped the generally inconsistent Muppets Haunted Mansion last October. It continued the company’s baffling ongoing struggle to figure out smart things to do with the seemingly endlessly fungible Muppets franchise, but at only 49 minutes and still packed with appealing moments, it felt like exactly the sort of small, jeopardy-free swing Disney should be taking.
The same is true of this October’s Disney+ Halloween season special, Werewolf by Night.
