It’s at least autumn before we see Jim Jarmusch’s first film in five years, but his latest contribution is larger than most can manage: Sqürl, his musical outfit with Carter Logan, scored four newly restored shorts from the legendary Man Ray, which will debut on May 15. Janus Films are releasing it as a package entitled Man Ray: Return to Reason and encompassing Le retour à la raison, Emak-Bakia, L’étoile de mer, and Les Mystères du Château du Dé; there is now a trailer showcasing films and music alike.

Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and his music partner Carter Logan’s SQÜRL want to induce a “psilocybin-inspired” experience for their latest project, a drone rock score written for four Man Ray films. The first time Jim Jarmusch came to Cannes was with his sophomore film Stranger Than Paradise, which played the Quinzaine in 1984. “We all shared one apartment that had no hot water, that was up the hill,” he recalls. “One day I had to be on TV and there was no water, so I had to shave with leftover tea.” Those days are long gone; Jarmusch is a fixture on the Croisette these days, and even had the dubious pleasure of opening it in 2019 with his Bill Murray-starring zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die.

We’re now in the month of Cannes Film Festival 2023 and they have a few more surprises up their sleeves thanks to the announcement of their Cannes Classics lineup. After being heavily rumored, it’s now confirmed a posthumous film from the legendary Jean-Luc Godard will premiere at the festival, billed as “Trailer of the film that will never exist: Phony Wars” and clocking at 20 minutes. Described as “the ultimate gesture of cinema,” Godard wrote this accompanying text: “No longer trusting the billions of diktats of the alphabet to give back their freedom to the incessant metamorphoses and metaphors of a true language by returning to the places of past shootings, while taking into account the present stories.”

If you happened to be at the Overlook Film Festival earlier this month, you were gifted with the rare opportunity to see Jim Jarmusch onstage twice. Once was during a live performance by Sqürl, the band he cofounded with collaborator and producer Carter Logan; the other was the tenth-anniversary screening of “Only Lovers Left Alive.” On paper, it was the perfect synthesis of art forms and artists, with Jarmusch and Logan playing songs from the “Only Lovers Left Alive” soundtrack before introing the film the following day.

For the past decade, Jim Jarmusch has walked two paths in the entertainment industry. While he continues to be best known for his work as a filmmaker and music video director, Jarmusch also performs with producer Carter Logan under the name Sqürl, a self-described “enthusiastically marginal rock band from New York City” that has also collaborated on the soundtracks for Jarmusch’s last three films. Jim Jarmusch hasn’t shared any news about his next film project, but the writer-director of 2016’s “Paterson” recently released some new original music from his rock band, Sqürl. The group’s fourth mini-album, “Ep #260,” features five songs, only one of which includes vocals – “Gates of Ishtar.” The heavily instrumental music sounds a lot like a film score, which makes sense considering Sqürl first came together to compose the soundtrack for Jarmusch’s 2009 crime-drama “The Limits of Control.” The band’s first name was Bad Rabbit.

You thought there was nothing new to add to the vampire genre? So, apparently, did Jarmusch, which is why Only Lovers Left Alive luxuriates in a curious end-of-an-era melancholy, as if he'd set out at once to make the last ever vampire movie and cinema's last ever love story.
The lovers in question are reclusive rock musician Adam (Tom Hiddleston, exuding fastidiously weary cool) and Eve (Tilda Swinton, pallid and otherworldly – I swear, you'd barely recognise her). Centuries old, the couple are married and still deeply in love though living apart: she in Tangier, he in a Detroit seemingly reverting to primeval jungle.

Of the many pleasures to be had within Jim Jarmusch's elegant "Only Lovers Left Alive" is the excellent, moody and evocative score by ... well, none other than Jarmusch himself. That's right, the writer and director also gets behind the guitar from time to time with his band Sqürl, and teaming with Jozek Van Wissem, they've concocted a pretty terrific set of music for the picture. Now, you get your first chance to check it out, as "The Taste Of Blood" has made its way online. It's the regular theme music that runs through the movie, starring Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska and Anton Yelchin as they brood and love in Detroit and Morocco.
