Minutes after the Writers Guild of America declared it was on strike, members lit up social media with vows to stay strong as they prepare to hit the picket lines on Tuesday.
News of the strike, which takes effect later this evening, came late Monday after the guild’s negotiations with the AMPTP failed to reach an agreement on a new film and scripted TV contract. It’s the WGA’s first strike since the 100-day walkout of 2007-08.
Reaction on Twitter was swift. “Here we go,” wrote David Simon. “See you all on the pavement, my brothers and sisters.” He followed it with the hashtag #WGAstrong.
Some expressed fear but that was quickly replaced by resolve, as scribes encouraged fellow members to ignore the spin “that’s already coming out.”

With the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” airing its finale on Thursday, Jan. 7, it is difficult to overstate what a significant milestone this season marked for representation across the franchise.
Case in point, the series introduced a romantic relationship between the first non-binary and transgender characters in the “Star Trek” universe, played respectively by a non-binary and a trans actor.
This recent spotlight on inclusive casting is part of an extended conversation that longtime fans like Phil Yu have been following over the years. To celebrate the steppingstones, Yu, who founded the “Angry Asian Man” blog centering on Asian American representation in Hollywood, launched a podcast in August, on which he hosts hour-long conversations with “All the Asians on ‘Star Trek.'”
While Yu half-jokingly titled his podcast, he tells Variety now that “the name points out that there are just enough [Asians] involved to make a podcast out of...

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 has kept Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham apart from the rest of the Discovery crew across its first two episodes, with the premiere exploring how Burnham adjusted to arriving in the 32nd century while the second followed Saru (Doug Jones) and the gang as they appeared in the far future one year later. In episode 3, “People of Earth,” they’ll finally find each other again and these new promo images tease a happy reunion.
The photos reveal Burnham back on board the U.S.S. Discovery, with the tearful Commander depicted hugging Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts) and in a touching half-embrace with Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Stamets (Anthony Rapps) and Saru. She’s also shown conversing with the Kelpian while walking through the ship.
As the title suggests, this episode will see the crew decide to return to Earth in order to find out what happened to...

Perhaps the crewmember of the USS Discovery who is the most out-of-place in the 32nd Century is the one person who isn’t a member of Starfleet. Michelle Yeoh’s Commander Philippa Georgiou has now changed her own status-quo twice during the run of Star Trek: Discovery. Because she’s not actually from “our” Prime Universe, this is the second time—that we know of—that she’s been yanked into a complex new reality, starkly different than the one she’s used to. And one line from Georgiou in Discovery Season 3, Episode 2, could actually establish the idea that when it comes to hopping around in the space-time continuum, Georgiou might just be getting started…
In one brief exchange in the latest Discovery episode—“Far From Home”—Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) tells Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) that she stayed with Discovery for the jump to the future because “I like hopping from universe to universe.

Marvel Studios’ Founding Chairman David Maisel is going to attempt to build two more cinematic universes. A year ago he teamed up with music industry executive Scooter Braun to launch Mythos Studios, and they purchased a controlling stake in Aspen Comics, which is the publisher founded by comic artist Michael Turner.
They plan on taking Turner’s original intellectual properties and building an animated cinematic universe out of them. They are calling that universe the TurnerVerse. These will be big event-sized animated films that tell an ongoing story over the course of multiple films.
The first two projects being produced in the TurnerVerse are Fathom and Soulfire. The two films are being developed by Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander, the directors of Netflix’s Next Gen. The screenplay for Fathom is being written by Kristin Gore (Saturday Night Live and Futurama), the daughter of Vice President Al Gore. The story centers around Aspen Matthews,...

Mythos Studios, the year-old content venture from Marvel Studios founding chairman David Maisel and manager-mogul Scooter Braun, announced Thursday the group of creatives who are overseeing three films in pre-production.
Foremost is “Cupid,” the first film in a planned universe based on Greek and Roman mythology. The titular matchmaker, to be voiced by Justin Bieber, will be directed by celebrated music video helmer and commercial animator Pete Candeland (of the beloved Gorillaz videos).
The narrative tells of Cupid and his love interest Psyche, developed for the screen by Carlos Kotkin (“Rio 2”) from a story adaptation by Maisel. Psyche, still uncast, is human royalty whose beauty intimidates Cupid’s mom Aphrodite.
The late Michael Turner, a comic creator and artist who worked with DC and Marvel, is most noted for his earliest and solo creations. Two of those, “Fathom” and “Soulfire,” are in productions as complimenting features that will move...

Don’t expect a formal captain’s log for the newest “Star Trek” series announced Wednesday by Nickelodeon and CBS Television. A new animated series will explore Starfleet from unexpected quarters thanks to CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment.
Siblings Kevin and Dan Hageman are developing a new “Star Trek” animated series, which will usher in a new generation of younger viewers to the franchise. Debuting exclusively on Nickelodeon, the series will feature CG animation and follow the adventures of a group of “lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship.” Faced with such temptation, these young rebels will use the ship and along the way, learn life lessons and search for meaning and salvation.

“Star Trek” intends to do right by Jean-Luc Picard, but the “Next Generation” spinoff featuring the Starfleet captain played by Patrick Stewart will feel much different from what’s come before. At a Paleyfest panel for “Star Trek: Discovery” on Sunday, series co-creator Alex Kurtzman ended the event with a highly anticipated update.
“I had an amazing experience yesterday. I sat at Patrick’s kitchen table and I heard him read the first episode, and I almost cried,” he said. “It was quite something. He’s at an amazing place in his life. He’s so excited.”
Stewart, 78, helmed the USS Enterprise as Picard for seven seasons of “The Next Generation” and four movies. Despite assimilation by the Borg and other unsavory and challenging encounters with aliens and humans alike, Picard had been a steadfast and moral figure, driven by duty but often alone as he is the last of the Picards.

Did you catch all of these Star Trek references in "The Sounds of Thunder"?
The sixth episode of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 feels, in some ways, like a smaller story that eventually becomes huge. And although the story mostly focuses on Saru and the Kelpiens clashing with the Ba’ul, there are still several subtle references, not just to Star Trek, but to science fiction in general.
Here’s all the winks and Easter eggs for Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 6. From old school sci-fi stories, to Kelvin Universe nods, to a visual shout-out to Tasha Yar, here’s everything you might have missed.
“The Sound of Thunder” probably references a Ray Bradbury short story

The series will focus on Yeoh’s character Philippa Georgiou, and it will expand “on the character’s current position as a member of Section 31, a shadowy intelligence agency operating within the Federation.”
There have been rumors about this series since Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 came to an end but now it’s official and this is what the actress had to say in a statement:
“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories. Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no Woman has ever gone before!’”

“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories. Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no Woman has ever gone before!’”
The new series will be written by Bo Yeon Kim...

Michelle Yeoh’s Philippa Georgiou will return with a Star Trek: Discovery spinoff series in the works for CBS All Access.
CBS All Access continues to expand the world of Star Trek, dominating – or, should we say, assimilating – its streaming service with Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek: The Next Generation Jean-Luc Picard spinoff, Short Treks offerings and at least two animated series already in the works.
Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek: Discovery character, Philippa Georgiou – captain, emperor, take your pick – will also step into the franchise spotlight with a series of her own, set around the mysterious, sometimes nefarious operations of Section 31, the Federation's intelligence branch.
Here's everything we know about the Section 31 Star Trek show so far...

Apparently, this isn’t the only galaxy that could use more Michelle Yeoh. The “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Crazy Rich Asians” star is set to reprise her role as Philippa Georgiou in a brand new series for CBS All Access, according to reports.
Yeoh, who will continue to be a part of “Star Trek: Discovery” as it ventures into its second season, will be the lead of a show set inside the workings of a mysterious network of intelligence operatives. Known as Section 31, the group already has Georgiou in its ranks. Section 31 featured prominently in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” as Starfleet’s deep-cover spy agency — so deep cover even the Federation president and high-ranking Starfleet admirals were unaware of it. It also appeared on “Star Trek: Enterprise,” showing how it pre-dated the Federation, and popped up, more ignominiously, in “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

Just hours after Crazy Rich Asians won the Best Comedy award at the Critics’ Choice Awards last night, Michelle Yeoh has scored another win with a Star Trek series of her own.
As Deadline exclusively reported back in November, CBS All Access has put a Star Trek Discovery spinoff into development with the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actor.
Set to return for the January 17-launching second season of the Sonequa Martin-Green led Discovery as Captain Philippa Georgiou, the Yeoh series is in the very early stages, I hear. At present, with Yeoh likely planned to also be a part of future Discovery seasons, the new Trekverse addition from co-ep Aaron Baiers, Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt is shaping up to be an ensemble
“Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades,” Star Trek Ep and expansion overlord Alex Kurtzman said in a statement today.

Though Stan Lee and Star Trek aren’t two things you’d usually associate with one another, the comic book legend does have a connection to the sci-fi franchise. It may not be a substantial one, but Marvel Comics actually published a number of Trek series, mini-series and standalones in the early 1980s and late 90s. And though Stan the Man is obviously more known for his contributions to pop culture involving costumed crusaders – think Spider-Man, Black Panther, the X-Men, etc. – he’s still got his ties to the franchise that Gene Roddenberry spawned all those years ago.
As such, countless Star Trek actors, from across the various TV shows and movies that’ve been released over the decades, have come forth to pay their respects to the man following his tragic death earlier this week. Including but not limited to, we have tributes from Patrick Stewart, Karl Urban, LeVar Burton,...
