As the streaming giants cut back on spending and Hollywood recovers from the strikes of 2023, one sector of the industry has continued to thrive: animation. And nowhere is this more evident than in Canada, which offers a fully established industry and a wealth of talent — all at an affordable price.
Animation insiders north of the border say they’ve seen an uptick in activity thanks to cost-conscious producers looking for more bang for their buck — not to mention other advantages like currency savings (the Canadian dollar is currently 74 cents to the U.S. dollar), speed and efficiency, experienced local talent and cross-border proximity to Los Angeles.
“Now that budgets have come down, we need to go back into our creative approaches of how we achieve a look and a result onscreen that works within a particular budget,” Michael Hefferon, president and COO at Vancouver-based Mainframe Studios, tells THR.

Over the past 25 years, visual effects have morphed from a sometimes-niche component of a sci-fi or adventure film to a fundamental part of nearly every movie or TV show. But this boom hasn’t generally created increased opportunity for women and women of color, though.
Despite the desperate need for qualified VFX artists, producers and supervisors to meet the increasing demand, a report by Women in Animation, an advocacy group, and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that just 2.9% of all VFX supervisors are women and only 0.5% are women of color. When they looked at the number of women credited for VFX work over time, the numbers also didn’t show that much improvement. When the groups analyzed the 400 top-earning films from 2016 through 2019, it was found that women were given 20.8%
of the VFX credits in 2016 and 22.6% in 2019.
The report also looked at how women were acknowledged for their work during awards season.

“Lucky,” the film project adapted from Alice Sebold’s 1999 memoir toplined by “You” star Victoria Pedretti, has been abandoned, Variety has learned.
The movie was dropped after losing its financing months ago, according to a source close to the production. Pedretti is also no longer involved.
In “Lucky,” Sebold depicts being viciously beaten and raped by a stranger during her freshman year at Syracuse University in 1981, and explores how this trauma shaped the rest of her life. On Wednesday, a New York Times article detailed how executive producer Timothy Mucciante raised concerns about the events in the book and left the project.
Anthony Broadwater, the man who is portrayed in her novel (under the fictional name of Gregory Madison) and was convicted with first-degree rape and five other charges in this case, was exonerated on Nov. 24 in New York State Supreme Court.

Sony Pictures has moved Milla Jovovich’s fantasy thriller “Monster Hunter” forward by four months from April 23, 2021, to Dec. 30 of this year.
The studio announced the shift late Monday afternoon. It’s the latest in a long line of major studio movies to be shuffled amid uncertainty over when most North American movie theaters will re-open, although most of the moves have been delays such as the James Bond movie “No Time to Die” going back five months from Nov. 20 to April 2, 2021.
“Monster Hunter,” written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, is loosely based on the Capcom video game series of the same name. The film also stars Tony Jaa, T.I., Ron Perlman, Meagan Good and Diego Boneta. Sony had been planning to open “Escape Room 2” on that date, but the sequel has been delayed to an undisclosed opening in 2021.

“Ready or Not’s” Adam Brody has signed on to star in “The Kid Detective.”
Sophie Nelisse will co-star in the dramedy from writer-director Evan Morgan.
Brody will star as a once-celebrated kid detective, now 31, who continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bouts of self-pity until a 16-year-old client (Nelisse) brings him his first “adult” case: to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.
William Woods and Jonathan Bronfman will produce, while Brody, Jeff Sackman, Berry Meyerowitz, Mark Gingras, John Laing, and Gareth Morgan will executive produce. Aqute Media is handling international sales with Level Film distributing in Canada. Production will start in late September.
Brody’s most recent appearance is in Fox Searchlight’s horror pic “Ready or Not” starring Samara Weaving, which hit theaters Wednesday and has earned strong reviews. The former “O.C.” star is about to begin production on FX’s limited series “Miss America,...

Stockholm was the best film I saw at the recent Whistler Film Festival in British Columbia.
Many of us are familiar with the term “Stockholm Syndrome”, a phenomenon where imprisoned or kidnapped hostages start to identify emotionally or politically with their captors. The Patty Hearst story is probably one of its most famous examples.
In the most legendary and spectacular case of “Stockholm Syndrome” — the 1974 Patty Hearst affair, the kidnap victim swung all the way over to the other side. Yet that was far from typical. Patty, the 20-year-old heiress who wedded herself to the “revolutionary” Symbionese Liberation Army, was photographed sporting a beret and a born-again moniker (Tania!) and a machine gun.
This is Not about that incident at all.
This film is about the original story from which that the term takes its name. And it is far more complex and interesting than the title might suggest.

In today’s news roundup, the Bible’s Elijah is getting a movie; Will Patton, Mark O’Brien and Michael Masini get acting roles; and “Roma” will open the Savannah Film Festival.
Project Unveiled
Winter State Entertainment is launching “Elijah” as a supernatural feature film interpretation based on the Biblical prophet of the same name who confronted rulers about idol worship, Variety has learned exclusively.
Producers Hamid and Camille Torabpour said “Elijah” will have elements of “The Lord of the Rings,” “Percy Jackson” and “The Passion of the Christ” with a diverse cast and crew of women and men both behind and in front of the camera. Jhene Chase, a Saudi-American female filmmaker whose credits include “Summertime Dropouts,” will be directing from a screenplay by Hamid Torabpour and Andrew Kightlinger.

To celebrate the home entertainment release of Pyewacket available now on Digital HD and on DVD from the 23rd April 2018, we have a copy of the DVD up for grabs, courtesy of Signature Entertainment!
Forget teen-friendly jump scares and Ouija board pranks – this the real deal, that goes deep into the dark heart of the occult. From the producer of cult hits The Void and The Witch, Pyewacket can take its place alongside those other-wordly modern horror classics.
Adam MacDonald, who directed the impressive killer bear thriller Backcountry, has crafted a deliciously taut slow burner, with outstanding central performances from Nicole Munoz as witchcraft-obsessed teenager Leah, and The Walking Dead’s Laurie Holden as her mother. As surprising as it is inventive, the film plants a seed of dread from the moment teenager Leah performs an occult ritual in the woods, building to an excruciating climax that will do for...

Back in 2015, Ethan Hawke starred in Robert Budreau’s drama “Born to Be Blue,” about jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. Now two years later, the duo are reuniting for Budreau’s upcoming thriller “Stockholm,” also co-starring Noomi Rapace.
Based on Daniel Lang’s New Yorker article “The Bank Drama,” the film, written by Budreau, tells the true story of the 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm. Giving rise to the psychological phenomenon known as “Stockholm Syndrome,” the events grabbed the world’s attention when the hostages bonded with their captors and turned against the authorities.
No additional details about the actors’ roles were revealed, though production is slated to begin in April. Sierra/Affinity will be presenting the film to buyers for the first time at this year’s European Film Market in Berlin.
