Ashton Kutcher has spoken about the rape allegations made against his former co-star Danny Masterson.
Kutcher’s That ‘70s Show and The Ranch castmate Masterson appeared in court in November, charged with allegedly raping three women, including a former girlfriend, at his home between 2001 and 2003.
Back in December, the case ended in mistrial after the jury were deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict. In January, prosecutors said that they would retry Masterson on all three counts, with the new trial scheduled for March.
In an interview with Esquire, Kutcher said Masterson had been the one to mentor and keep in line the young cast on That ‘70s Show, making the legal case particularly hard for him to watch.
Explaining that he was still in touch with Masterson and regularly speaks to his brother, Kutcher said that he worried about the impact of the case on his eight-year-old daughter.

Actor Danny Masterson will face a retrial on charges he forcibly raped three women at his home in the Hollywood Hills between 2001 and 2003, Los Angeles County prosecutors announced Tuesday.
The decision comes after a jury hopelessly deadlocked on the charges at a trial that ended in November.
Masterson, best known for his role on the sitcom That ’70s Show, appeared in court as his defense lawyer Philip Cohen asked the court to dismiss the three counts based on the argument that “no reasonable jury” could return a conviction based on...

Prosecutors announced on Tuesday that they will pursue a second trial against Danny Masterson, after a jury deadlocked on three rape charges at the actor’s first trial in November.
Masterson, 46, is accused of forcibly raping three women at his home in the Hollywood Hills from 2001 to 2003. He was a star of the Fox sitcom “That ’70s Show” at the time.
“Our office has decided to retry this case,” Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller told the court.
Though they could not reach a verdict, the jurors leaned toward acquittal, with votes of 10-2, 8-4 and 7-5 on the three counts.
Mueller argued that the jury ignored supporting testimony in the case.
“Not giving these victims another chance with a jury who can sit there and consider all of the evidence — win, lose or draw –- that would be an injustice,” Mueller said.
Judge Charlaine Olmedo denied a defense request to dismiss the case.

A judge declared a mistrial Wednesday at the rape trial of “That ’70s Show” actor Danny Masterson after jurors, who were leaning strongly toward acquitting him, deadlocked following the monthlong trial in which the Church of Scientology played a supporting role.
Prosecutors said Masterson raped three women, including a former girlfriend, in his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003 and the church dissuaded them from going public for years. Masterson, 46, pleaded not guilty and his lawyer said the acts were all consensual.
“I find the jurors hopelessly deadlocked,” Judge Charlaine Olmedo declared after the jury foreman said there was nothing the court could do to move them closer to reaching a unanimous decision. She set a March date for a retrial in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Olmedo had ordered jurors to take Thanksgiving week off and keep deliberating after they said on Nov. 18 that they could not reach a consensus. A...

Actor Danny Masterson’s rape trial ended in a mistrial on Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles as a deadlocked jury could not agree on a verdict.
The judge in the case declared the mistrial after a weeks-long trial in which three different women testified that Masterson raped them and other witnesses appeared to corroborate their accounts.
Prosectors retain the option to try Masterson, a member of the Church of Scientology, again. They have not yet indicated whether they intend to do so.
Masterson, who achieved fame with his role on the sitcom That ’70s Show, is accused of assaulting the three women at his Hollywood Hills home in the early 2000s. Two years after Danny Masterson was charged with three counts of forcible rape, and about 20 years after the incidents would’ve occurred, the That ’70s Show star’s case was declared a mistrial on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
A jury of six women and six men, who began deliberations at Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles on Nov. 16, determined after nearly two weeks in discussion that they were deadlocked. The deliberations — which started with seven women and five men — had already dragged on, carrying into the Thanksgiving break.

The jury in the Danny Masterson rape trial was told Monday to start its deliberations from scratch on Monday, after two members of the panel were excused due to testing positive for Covid-19.
The jury had informed Judge Charlaine Olmedo on Nov. 18 that it was unable to reach a verdict on any of three charges of forcible rape. That announcement came after nearly three days of deliberations. Olmedo ordered the jurors to return Monday and continue to deliberate.
Two of the jurors informed the court on Sunday that they had tested positive for Covid-19 and were experiencing symptoms, Olmedo said in court on Monday morning. She replaced those jurors with two alternates, and informed the new panel that they must start their deliberations all over again, “as if the earlier deliberations had not taken place.”
The jury had been made up of seven women and five men. It is now six men and six women.

The jury in the Danny Masterson rape trial told the judge on Friday that it could not reach a verdict.
However, Judge Charlaine Olmedo said that the jurors have not deliberated long enough to declare a mistrial. She ordered the jury to resume deliberations on Nov. 28, after taking a week off for Thanksgiving.

The jury has been deliberating for nearly three days. No indication was given as to the breakdown of the vote.
Defense attorney Philip Cohen argued that the jury has had enough time, and suggested that the judge question the panel about whether anything might resolve the deadlock.

Tara Savelo was born into Scientology and remained active in it into her 20s. She grew up in Clearwater, Fla., one of the church’s main outposts, and later moved to Los Angeles, where she became Lady Gaga’s makeup artist.
She drifted away from the church as she built her own life. But over the last few weeks, as she has read about the Danny Masterson rape trial, many of the church’s teachings and practices have come back to the surface.
“The verbiage the victims use – the first time I read it, it was so upsetting,” she said. “There are specific words and descriptors they’ve used that are ingrained in my DNA. It makes my stomach turn.”
For a lot of former Scientologists, the Masterson trial has been a subject of intense fascination. It combines celebrity, sex and justice, and it is set within a society that they know intimately.

After a month of intense, often emotional testimony from witnesses, prosecutors and Danny Masterson’s defense attorneys delivered their closing arguments at court in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday, once again detailing the alleged incidents tied to the three forcible rape charges Masterson faces. The prosecution implored jurors to hold Masterson accountable, highlighting what they describe as a pattern of predatory behavior, while Masterson’s attorneys once again focused on inconsistencies in the women’s stories that he said tainted their case. The trial is now headed to the jury to deliberate.

Danny Masterson’s rape trial culminated Tuesday with prosecutors portraying the That ’70s Show star as a serial rapist who abused his celebrity status to violently sexually assault women in his orbit and the defense suggesting that the district attorney’s office is stubbornly pursuing a losing case despite inconsistencies in the accusers’ testimony.
After weeks of several victims recounting their alleged assaults by Masterson, the two sides landed where they began: arguing over whether the incidents in question were rapes or consensual sex.
The trial is widely seen as one of the most high-profile criminal cases of the #MeToo movement. The investigation into Masterson was initiated in 2017, when three women come forward with allegations shortly after Harvey Weinstein was publicly accused of sexually assaulting several people.

The prosecutor in the Danny Masterson trial urged the jury on Tuesday to find him guilty of three forcible rapes, and to “show him that ‘no’ actually means ‘no.'”
Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller and defense attorney Philip Cohen gave their closing arguments at the end of a month-long trial.
Masterson is accused of raping the women between 2001 and 2003, and faces up to 45 years to life in prison if convicted.
“‘No’ never means ‘no’ for Mr. Masterson, not if you’re in his bed, in his house,” Mueller said.
Mueller noted that the “That ’70s Show” actor has appeared every day in court as a “well-dressed, well-groomed gentleman.” But, he said the victims have a much different view of him.
He portrayed Masterson as “entitled” due to his standing within the Church of Scientology. He argued that Masterson disregarded the victims’ wishes and took advantage of them when they were drunk.

Danny Masterson told a judge on Monday that he would not testify in his own defense as his rape trial nears its conclusion.
Masterson, a former star of “That ’70s Show,” is accused of forcibly raping three women between 2001 and 2003.
Judge Charlaine Olmedo asked Masterson if he had a chance to discuss his decision with his attorneys. He responded that he had, and she asked what his decision was.
“To not testify,” Masterson said.
The prosecution officially rested its case on Monday morning, and defense attorney Philip Cohen also rested after indicating that he would not call any witnesses. Closing arguments are set for Tuesday.
Cohen made a motion to dismiss the case, which was denied.
The three women took the stand earlier in the case, giving often emotional testimony about the alleged assaults. A fourth woman also gave supporting testimony, telling jurors that that Masterson raped her in 1996.

The fourth and final accuser to testify that Danny Masterson violently raped her took the stand Thursday for cross-examination, standing her ground as defense attorney Philip Cohen focused on a message of “support” she sent the “That ’70s Show” star’s brother after initial reports about rape accusations began to surface in 2017.
But there was one thing she wasn’t allowed to say: Masterson’s former DJ name, a slang term for a violent sexual act.

A fourth accuser told jurors on Wednesday morning that she fell asleep on the floor of Danny Masterson’s home in 1996, and later awoke to find him on top of her, having sex with her.
Masterson, the onetime star of “That ’70s Show,” is on trial in Los Angeles for allegedly raping three women from 2001 to 2003. The fourth accuser, identified in court as Tricia V., was called by the prosecution to reinforce the charges and show a pattern of misconduct.
Philip Cohen, Masterson’s defense lawyer, had strenuously objected to allowing her to testify. Judge Charlaine Olmedo initially excluded her from the trial but reversed herself in a ruling on Monday, saying that Cohen’s arguments had “opened the door” to the testimony.
At a lunch break, Cohen vented his frustration over Tricia V.’s testimony, and said that prosecutor Reinhold Mueller had strayed into some areas that were supposed to be off limits.

Former Scrubs co-executive producer Eric Weinberg, currently incarcerated in downtown Los Angeles on 18 criminal counts of rape, has been sued in civil court by two different women for sexual assault.
“Plaintiff C.D. suffered physical, emotional, and economic harm as a result of Weinberg’s assault, and brings this action for sexual assault, sexual battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligence,” says one of the filings (read it here) made late Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court. Describing an alleged 2019 rape in the producer’s L.A. home in graphic detail, the jury trial-seeking complaint asks for wide-ranging but unspecified damages.
Initially arrested by Los Angeles police in July on charges of multiple rapes strewn from 2012 to 2019, Weinberg was first released on a 3.2 million bail bond. Later upped to 5 million, that bail was revoked, and Weinberg was taken into custody October 25 after pleading not guilty at his arraignment.

A fourth alleged rape victim of Danny Masterson will be permitted to testify in the That ‘70s Show actor’s Los Angeles trial.

In a setback for Danny Masterson’s defense team, a judge ruled Monday that prosecutors may call a fourth woman to testify that the actor raped her.
Judge Charlaine Olmedo had previously excluded the woman’s testimony from the trial, but said Monday that the defense’s arguments had caused her to change her ruling.
Masterson is charged with forcibly raping three women from 2001 through 2003. The prosecution wants to call the fourth woman, identified in court as Trisha V., to show a pattern of alleged sexual misconduct. According to prosecutor Reinhold Mueller, Trisha V. alleges that Masterson had sex with her twice while she was passed out drunk in 1996, when Masterson was 20 years old.
Masterson’s lawyer, Philip Cohen, argued that allowing the testimony at a late stage of the trial violates Masterson’s due process rights.

Dark for the past two days, Danny Masterson’s rape trial resumed Wednesday with testimony from Jane Doe #2 about the former That ‘70s Show star’s alleged assault of her in 2003. However, before the last of the trio of women at the heart of the case had her time on the stand, the defense accused former Scientologist and The King of Queens star Leah Remini of potentially denying their client a “fair trial.”

Christina B., the second accuser in the Danny Masterson rape trial, completed her testimony on Thursday, alleging that she has been subjected to a “terror campaign” by the Church of Scientology.
The woman, who testified across three days, was asked by prosecutor Reinhold Mueller why she had filed a civil suit against Masterson and the church in 2019.
“It’s related to the terror campaign that this criminal organization has put upon me and my family,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how many police reports or FBI reports I would file. No one would stop them — no one. And they’re doing it to this day.”
Karin Pouw, the spokeswoman for the Church of Scientology, said in an email that the allegations are “categorically untrue.”

In a dramatic moment at the Clara Shortridge Foltz courthouse in downtown Los Angeles, Scrubs executive producer Eric Weinberg was remanded into custody when presiding judge Virginia Wilson agreed with the prosecutor that he remains an active and credible societal danger. Through his attorney, Weinberg pleaded not guilty to 18 charges of sexual assault. He was previously free on 5 million bail.

The second accuser in the Danny Masterson rape trial broke down on the stand Tuesday when describing retaliation she has faced from the Church of Scientology.
The woman, a former girlfriend of Masterson’s who has been identified in court as Christina B., appeared to have a panic attack as she discussed the consequences of being declared a “suppressive person.”
“I can’t breathe,” she said at one point.
She testified that she reported Masterson to the church after he allegedly raped her while she was unconscious in December 2001. She said a church official told her that it was not possible to rape one’s girlfriend.
She said she was also told it was her job, or her “hat” in Scientology terminology, “to give him sex whenever he wanted.”

A woman who accused “That ’70s Show” actor Danny Masterson of raping her in April 2003 said Friday that she fears retaliation from the Church of Scientology for testifying against him.
The woman, who prefers to be identified as Jane Doe #1, told a jury that she fears the church could also go after her three children. She said she filed a lawsuit against Masterson and the church in 2019 as a way to “sue for peace.”
“It’s the only way for them to stop,” she said. “You have to sue for peace. That’s the policy.”
Masterson, a lifelong Scientologist, is on trial in Los Angeles for three alleged forcible rapes dating from 2001 to 2003. Jane Doe #1, who was a Scientologist at the time of the alleged rape, has testified that she feared being excommunicated for reporting Masterson to the police.

Danny Masterson’s first rape accuser spent a long day on the witness stand on Thursday, as Masterson’s defense lawyer sought to expose inconsistencies in her accounts.
The woman, who prefers to be referred to as Jane Doe #1, told her story in often emotional terms earlier in the week, alleging that Masterson raped her at his home in April 2003. Masterson, the former star of “That ’70s Show,” is facing three charges of forcible rape that could send him to prison for 45 years to life.
On Thursday, defense attorney Philip Cohen asked her about differences between her initial statements to the police in 2004 and later interviews after the case was revived in 2016.
Jane Doe #1 said she did not remember one of the 2004 interviews, and said that some details in the initial police report were inaccurate. At one point, she began to cry when recounting a phone conversation with Masterson after the alleged rape.

Scientology was front and center on Tuesday as the rape trial against “That ’70s Show” actor Danny Masterson began.
Masterson is a Scientologist and each of his alleged victims was a Scientologist at the time of the alleged rapes, which span from 2001 to 2003.
The first witness to take the stand — who prefers to be known as Jane Doe #1 — testified that the church warns members against “fraternizing with the enemy,” and refers to non-Scientologists as “wogs.”
That testimony drew an angry rebuke from Judge Charlaine Olmedo during a break, who blistered the prosecutor for straying from her pre-trial rulings on the issue.
“I understand these witnesses’ lives may have been completely inundated with Scientology,” Olmedo said, visibly angered. “This trial is not going to be inundated with Scientology.”
Philip Cohen, Masterson’s lead defense lawyer, asked for a mistrial, arguing that the testimony was likely to unfairly prejudice the case. Olmedo denied that request,...

Attorneys are set to give opening statements in the Danny Masterson rape trial on Tuesday, as a jury is expected to be chosen by mid-morning.
Over the last week, the initial pool of 225 potential jurors has been narrowed to about 85. On Monday, the defense and the prosecution began to question the potential jurors in open court — in what is called voir dire — after an initial round of screening from Judge Charlaine Olmedo.
One of the key questions has been how much the potential jurors know about Scientology. Masterson is a Scientologist and each of his three accusers was a Scientologist at the time of the alleged rape. The accusers — now all ex-Scientologists — have said that they delayed going to the police out of concern that they could be excommunicated.
At the outset of his questioning, defense attorney Philip Cohen emphasized that Scientology is not on trial.

Danny Masterson’s trial for the alleged assault and rape of three women has come to a Los Angeles courtroom at the same moment as several prominent #MeToo cases – but these allegations predate the #MeToo movement, underlining just how long they have dogged the “That 70’s Show” actor and prominent Scientologist.
Masterson and his lawyers Philip Cohen and Karen Goldstein were in a Los Angeles court Monday, where jury selection got underway. Dozens of prospective jurors were sworn in and given questionnaire instructions; they were dismissed before midday and expected back Tuesday afternoon to begin the selection process.
Masterson was formally charged in 2020, but allegations first came to light in March 2017, more than six months before the New York Times’ bombshell report on Harvey Weinstein. A blogger covering Scientology was first to report that Los Angeles Police Department detectives were investigating Masterson after three women came forward with accusations of rape and assault.
