James Bond has been a cinematic icon for a half century. But more than ever, the current landscape has provided the character a launching pad to connect with more viewers and rake in the more cash (“Skyfall” took in a cool billion in 2012, making it the most successful 007 film in franchise history). Over the course of three outings, Daniel Craig’s iteration of the superspy has been much more moody and far less campy—007’s gadgets have popped up here and there, but never quite like the Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan vehicles. And with the help of Sam Mendes, Bond became the spy of the 21st century (Jason Bourne gave him a run for the money in the early aughts). And now we are only a couple short weeks away from the release of the Mendes/Craig follow up, “Spectre.” Read More: Review: Sam Mendes’ ‘Spectre’ Starring Daniel Craig With that in mind,...

The Ellen DeGeneres Show is available in Sweden, China, New Zealand, and a bunch of other countries you've probably never watched Ellen in. But, sadly, the English are among the few who don't get to see Ellen scare the living daylights out of her celebrity guests. Her absence on England's TV screens is criminal, so it's a good thing the Brits have their unofficial ambassador in the states, James Corden, to save Queen Ellen. Here he is performing his own #GetElleyOnTheTelly theme song, backed by Harry Potter, Queen Elizabeth II, and Sherlock Holmes impersonators and a slideshow of Britain's finest exports (David Beckham obviously included). Cheers!

The voice of Patrick Star, Bill Fagerbakke, explains Spongebob to us...
The man who provides the voice to Patrick Star in Spongebob Squarepants - and thus, in the recent The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water feature - is Mr Bill Fagerbakke. As Sponge Out Of Water arrives on DVD, he spared us some time for a chat. But we started with something not so fishy...
Before we get onto Spongebob, it'd be remiss of me not to bring up the Starship Troopers animated TV show that you leant your voice to. That was the only proper companion they ever really did to the film.
Yeah. That was a cool ride. It was another time I worked with Clancy Brown too. The session director was Sue Blue, and it was so much fun. It was one of the very rare times in my voiceover career where I've portrayed a 'regular...

Ben Wheatley has a 70s-set thriller in the works, and Brie Larson's joining the cast...
Among Britain's finest directors currently working, Ben Wheatley's now putting the finishing touches to his latest film, High-Rise - the adaptation of Jg Ballard's novel.
Before that, he made the wonderfully eccentric A Field In England, black comedy Sightseers, Kill List, Down Terrace, as well as a couple of great Doctor Who episodes.
Wheatley's next film is Free Fire, a 70s-set crime thriller about two gangs clashing in a secluded Boston warehouse.
Martin Scorsese's signed up as executive producer, while the confirmed cast already includes Luke Evans, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Wheatley's regular collaborator, Michael Smiley.
There was once a role for Olivia Wilde, but she's since dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. In her place is Brie Larson, whose role in Short Term 12 put her firmly on the Hollywood map.

Lilting is about loss times two. Mother and partner divided when their love object was alive. Battling still after his unexpected death. But although you will get teary eyed, the film is not depressive by any measure.
Why?
Writer/director Hong Khaou's debut feature is exhilarating in its craft, its performances, and its tale of the eventual fusing of two disparate hearts. Also, in its timeliness. Many ethic groups residing in Western countries are still more than a few steps behind in their acceptance of same-sex relationships.
The film commences with the handsome, lithe Kai (Andrew Leung) visiting his mother Junn (Cheng Pei Pei) in a London retirement home. Junn, of Cambodian-Chinese origin, although having lived in England for decades, has never bothered to become proficient in English. In fact, "Fuck you very much"is about her total vocabulary. A widow, Junn has consequently always depended on Kai for everything,...

One of Britain's finest superheroes, Bananaman, might just be getting a movie in 2015...
We don't have much in the way of news on this at the moment, but we do have enough nonetheless to put a grin on the face of those followers of Britain's fruitiest superhero. For it seems as though a Bananaman movie is on the way.
Bananaman, for those who haven't had the pleasure, is a few things. Firstly, it's a sod of a word to have to type over and over in a news story. Secondly, its the alter ego of schoolboy Eric Wimp (whose name eventually changed to Eric Twinge). Thirdly, it was a comic strip that debuted in Nutty comic (remember that?) back in 1980, before transferring to The Dandy.
Eventually spinning off into a television cartoon series too, Eric - along with his trust companion Crow - became Bananaman by eating a banana,...

Washington, Feb. 06: A full-size statue of Charles Dickens is all set to be erected in Portsmouth, the city of the author's birth.
The bronze image of the great writer, seated by a pile of books and shrouded in a theatrical drape is made by Martin Jennings, who is regarded as one of Britain's finest portrait sculptors, the Independent reported.
Despite the fact that the late author ordered that there must never be a statue of him in Britain, one will be unveiled in the Guildhall Square in Portsmouth on 6th Feb.
The statue's unveiling will involve a nine-year-old descendant of the author, Oliver Dickens, along with Esha Abedin, a pupil of the local Charles Dickens Primary School, and actors Edward Fox and Joanna David..

Imagine Gandhi with Dustin Hoffman as the leader of India's non-violent independence movement? Or The Wackness with Mary-Kate Olsen macking on Bill Murray? Both could have been reality if Ben Kingsley took the Beatles' advice and became a singer. "John Lennon and Ringo saw a show I did and introduced me to Dick James, who was head of Northern Songs, the music publisher," Kingsley tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I also had an offer from the Chichester Festival to join them to do classical plays, and I decided to go there for the summer,...

★★☆☆☆ When you think of Jane Austen, the typical image that immediately springs to mind is of dashing gents emerging from lakes in billowing white shirts. However, in Jerusha Hess' Austenland (2013), the first-time director attempts to contemporise the queen of Georgian literature, blending Austen's dry wit with a nerdish charm. The film follows the fortunes of Jane Hayes (Keri Russell), a thirtysomething obsessed with the eponymous Austen. In particular, she adores the writer's best-loved novel, Pride and Prejudice, hoping to one day find her very own Mr. Darcy - especially after hearing about an Austen-themed retreat.
On a whim, Jane decides to throw caution to the wind and spends all of her savings on what is guaranteed to be a life-changing trip. Once there, the bullish Mrs. Wattlesbrook (Jane Seymour), lady of the picturesque stately home, drills her guests daily in a series of period-specific activities - ranging from archery...

Seventeen years after being nominated for an Oscar for her role in Mike Leigh's award-winning Secrets & Lies, Londoner Marianne Jean-Baptiste has returned to the London stage. Here she talks about her own brand of spirituality, motherhood and why she chose to pursue her career in America
Marianne Jean-Baptiste is back. She is about to play the lead in the National's production of James Baldwin's The Amen Corner, and there is a feeling that she is, at last, in her rightful place. Jean-Baptiste made history: she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Mike Leigh's Secrets & Lies (1996) and was the first black British actress to be nominated for an Oscar. Yet we have not seen her on stage here for years. Her return is a cause for celebration. I hear her generous laughter in the theatre's upstairs corridor before clapping eyes on her – and know,...

Looking to innovate with the film and the release, Ben Wheatley's A Field In England will be widely available on its opening day.
We're big fans of Ben Wheatley's work, as you may have gleamed over the years, so whenever he has a film in production it's invariably one we're very keen to see. His next project, the psychedelic English civil war movie A Field In England is certainly no exception, boasting a tantalising premise, a great cast and one of Britain's finest filmmakers at the helm.
One of the issues we've found when getting all excited about Wheatley's upcoming films is the inevitable long wait between the release in (very) selected cinemas to when it becomes widely available to rent. That doesn't appear to be a problem this time around however as his new film will be released in cinemas, on...

The terms "British cinema" and "action movie" tend not to go together particularly well. Maybe it's the smaller budgets at play, maybe it's an awareness that our American and Asian cousins do it better, maybe it's cultural -- most British cops don't carry weapons, for example. It's not that it hasn't been tried, it's more that the examples we do have -- "The 51st State," "Centurion," "The Sweeney" -- tend to be bad enough to dissuade too many others from giving it a shot, and so the idea of an action movie set in the U.K. remains incongruous enough that it can form the central joke of an entire film, like Edgar Wright's "Hot Fuzz." But that might all be about to change, thanks to "Welcome To The Punch." Produced by Ridley Scott, marking the second film from Eran Creevy (who was behind the excellent and underrated "Shifty...
