Megadeth surprised fans with an impromptu acoustic set in front of the Hotel Madero in Buenos Aires.
Local Argentinians and Megadeth faithful who happened to catch the performance were treated to unplugged renditions of “Trust,” “Angry Again,” and “Symphony of Destruction.” And by unplugged, we mean totally acoustic — no mics, open air. Drummer Dirk Verbeuren doesn’t even have an instrument and instead slaps his thighs to the beat.
In the fan-filmed footage, the gathered crowd sings along soccer-chant style and actually overtakes the band in volume.
The pop-up set reprises Megadeth’s previous outside-of-hotel acoustic sets in Buenos Aires in 2016 (Four Seasons) and in 2018, when Mustaine played a surprise unplugged solo set for fans outside a hotel in Mendoza, Argentina, during a brief vacation following shows in Mexico.
Megadeth’s current Latin American tour runs through the end of April, followed by a European jaunt in June (tickets available here.

Kiko Loureiro is extending his absence from Megadeth and will remain away from the band during its “heavier touring schedule” in 2024.
The Brazilian guitarist initially sat out the fall leg of Megadeth’s 2023 tour due to “family reasons.” Finnish axeman Teemu Mäntysaari filled in as a replacement and will retain that role for the upcoming tour dates.
Loureiro issued a statement on Instagram regarding his continued absence:
“Dear Megadeth fans, I want to share with you a decision that hasn’t been easy for me.
In September, I had to step away from the U.S. leg of the tour for family reasons. Looking ahead, during 2024, we anticipate an even heavier touring schedule for Megadeth. After thorough reflection and discussions with Dave Mustaine and Megadeth’s management, we have collectively agreed that it is the right move to extend my absence. I don’t want to hinder any of the...

Marty Friedman contributed to a number of Megadeth’s all-time classic albums, most notably 1990’s Rust in Peace and 1992’s Countdown to Extinction, but had not shared the stage alongside Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine since his exit from the band in 2000. But that all changed on Monday, February 27th, when the guitar virtuoso reunited with Megadeth for three songs during their headlining performance at Tokyo’s legendary Budokan Arena.
“It was just like a perfect exclamation point on everything that we had done together up until this point,” Friedman told Heavy Consequence a day after the show. “You couldn’t have written a better way for the whole thing to play out. It was just perfect timing, just a very natural and organic way to do it.”
Friedman has resided in Japan for the better part of two decades, and both the timing and location of the gig were more than ideal.

In the six years since Megadeth released their last album, Dystopia, Dave Mustaine has survived a cancer scare, a global pandemic, and his 60th birthday. This summer, the steadfast speed-metal pioneers will put out its 16th album, The Sick, the Dying … and the Dead!, a typically breakneck thrashathon that musicians a third of Mustaine’s age would struggle to keep up with.
Did Mustaine have any reservations about the album title, a Black Plague reference he picked before Covid-19 became the new plague? “No,” he says on a Zoom from Switzerland,...

A cadre of music’s heaviest hitters will lead the Grammy Music Education Coalition’s nine-hour fundraising telethon, dubbed Oh Say Can You Stream, on Saturday.
Alice Cooper, Dmc and host Megadeth’s David Ellefson will all make appearances during the broadcast, which will take place at 4 p.m. Et on several online channels. Proceeds will benefit the School’s Out initiative — which offers online lessons, instruments and gear to children and aspiring musicians during this period where school is literally out because of the coronavirus pandemic — as well as Covid-19 relief charities.

Megadeth has canceled the majority of their upcoming tour following singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine’s throat cancer diagnosis.
“I’ve been diagnosed with throat cancer. It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on — but I’ve faced obstacles before,” Mustaine, 57, wrote on the hard rock band’s website Monday. “I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun.
“Unfortunately, this requires that we cancel most shows this year. The 2019 Megacruise will happen, and the band will be a part of it in some form. Megadeth will be back on the road Asap,” he continued.

“Meanwhile, Kiko, David, Dirk and I are in the studio, working on the follow up to ‘Dystopia’ – which I can’t wait for everyone to hear.
