Awards courting, auctioning among distributors and corporate-sponsored parties can really take the “film” out of “film festival,” with moviegoing sometimes becoming an afterthought to more market-oriented activities at the industry’s legacy gatherings. The Los Angeles Festival of Movies is not one of those film festivals.
Launching this coming weekend, Lafm is screening an eclectic and diverse slate of independent features across a trio of theaters on the east side of Los Angeles, a world away from the shadows of studio lots and agencies. The festival is co-presented by the world cinema streamer Mubi and the non-profit Mezzanine, which has been programming in L.A. for more than two years, screening contemporary indies, avant garde work and underseen repertory features for an audience that has grown to trust its adventurous taste.

A new film festival is on the scene. Los Angeles Festival of Movies (Lafm), co-presented by Mubi and Mezzanine, has announced the full line-up for its inaugural run, taking place April 4-7, 2024. The LA film festival scene just got a bit brighter.
The Los Angeles Festival of Movies (Lafm), co-presented by Mubi and Mezzanine, announced the full lineup for its inaugural festival taking place April 4-7, 2024. The new festival will screen 11 titles including one world premiere, three 4K restorations, plus a featured artist talk, documentary series, and a curated short film program. Passes are currently on sale, and single film tickets go on sale March 14.
Per the festival’s organizers, Lafm was created to redefine Los Angeles as a destination for independent film. There are many film festivals in LA, primarily led by AFI Fest in the fall, but rarely do they make independent film their only focus.
The festival’s screenings will all take place at three recently opened venues on the east side of Los Angeles: Vidiots in Eagle Rock, 2220 Arts + Archives in Historic Filipinotown, and Now Instant Image Hall in Chinatown.

A24 and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair director Jane Schoenbrun have teamed up for a new horror movie called I Saw the TV Glow, which JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (you can read his 5/10 review at This Link). Yesterday, A24 took to social media to unveil a poster for the film, and to promise that a trailer would be online today. True to their word, they have already dropped the trailer online, and you can check it out in the embed above! I Saw the TV Glow is scheduled to reach theatres on May 3rd.
Written and directed by Schoenbrun, I Saw the TV Glow tells the story of two teenage outcasts who bond over their shared love of a scary television show. However, the boundary between TV and reality begins to blur after it is mysteriously canceled.

Fresh off the haunting and singularly creepy indie We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, Jane Schoenbrun is back with A24‘s I Saw the TV Glow, releasing only in theaters May 3.
Headed to the SXSW Film Festival next month, I Saw the TV Glow first earned rave reviews out of Sundance, and several of them are featured in the film’s must-see official trailer.
In a world where too many people seem to be following trends and doing what everyone else is doing, Jane Schoenbrun is undoubtedly a true original. That was clear from We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. And it’s crystal clear watching the trailer for I Saw the TV Glow.

A24 gave their satirical slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies (you can read our 8/10 review at This Link) a wide theatrical release back in August, and now it has been announced that Bodies Bodies Bodies is heading to Blu-ray and DVD on October 18th – so it’s coming home just in time for Halloween. Copies are available for pre-order on Amazon.
A24 first purchased Kristen Roupenian’s Bodies Bodies Bodies spec script back in March of 2018. The script was said to show “heightened sensitivity to character development and social dynamics in a subversive way”, and was described as
a shrewd character study where mystery and deep-seated scares blended in such a way that the company saw an opportunity to make a horror movie that could also be culturally relevant.
The script got some touch-up work from Sarah DeLappe, Chloe Okuno, Joshua Sharp, and Aaron Jackson in the time between acquisition when it...

A24 and Fruit Tree Productions have added several new cast members for the upcoming thriller with the intriguing title of "I Saw the TV Glow." This project comes to us from writer and producer Jane Schoenbrun. If "Poltergeist" and "The Ring" made you fear your television and VHS player, you're going to find the synopsis intriguing. That goes double if you love horror television.
The cast isn't just populated with actors, but a bunch of musicians as well, including Fred Durst, indie artist Lindsey Jordan from Snail Mail, the band King Woman, and more.
If Fruit Tree Productions sounds familiar, it's the banner started by Academy Award-winner Emma Stone and Emmy-nominated writer-director Dave McCary in 2020.
The film has wrapped production already, though there has been no release date announcement yet. We'll keep you updated as that information becomes available.

“Bullet Train” is maintaining the top slot at the box office this weekend, fending off the newcomers “Fall” and “Mack and Rita,” as well as the expanding slasher-comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Sony’s Brad Pitt action vehicle added 3.865 million on Friday. The film remains the widest release in the country with 4,357 locations. The studio is projecting a 13 million gross for the sophomore outing, which would mark a fairly solid 56 drop from its opening last weekend.
“Bullet Train” is expected to expand its domestic cume to 54 million through Sunday. The adaptation of Kōtarō Isaka’s crime novel of the same name carries a 90 million production budget — hefty for a prospective blockbuster outside of a franchise. With an August slate that looks to be fairly light on high-profile new releases, Sony is hoping for “Bullet Train” to leg it out and draw in a solid gross through the month.

On Shrill, Aidy Bryant's Annie doesn't exactly have an ideal love life, but in real life, Bryant has met her match in husband Conner O'Malley. The couple, who have been together for several years and married since 2018, are both comedians who have worked to break new ground and offer up new ways that comedy can be in the modern world.
O'Malley is a little lower profile than his wife, with a more off-the-beaten-path style of comedy and fewer "big name" projects, but he's got a voice all his own that's helped elevate him from social media sensation to full-time comedy writer and performer. Here are five things you might not know about O'Malley (but should)!

“There’s nothing nobler in popular music than being a one-hit wonder. Let the Madonnas, Drakes, and Mariah Careys of the world fill their homes with platinum plaques. Even though violence, gore, and sex fill Adult Swim’s airwaves, there are still wholesome rays of positivity that shine through the nihilism. Joe Pera Talks With You is almost anti-comedy in how simple and genuine it is. Spun off from his popular infomercial specials, Joe Pera’s series looks at his various mundane passions as he tries to give the audience a brief education on these topics of his choosing. Pera’s unique, gentle personality and the unusual comedic sensibilities of the show’s creative team, Conner O’Malley and Jo Firestone, result in a program that is truly like no other.

Looking to pursue your own American dream? How To Make It In USA has some tips--albeit poor ones--that can help you on your path. The new web series stars Joe Pera and Conner O'Malley as an unfunny comedian and an out-of-touch agent who banter with each other in the agent's office.
What drives How To Make It In USA is its experienced stars' assured deliveries. Pera, who previously starred in the MTV web series Pancake Breakfast Critic, crafts his character a meek, gutless comic with terrible jokes. O'Malley, who writes for Late Night with Seth Meyers, takes agent Max Gold in the opposite direction. His performance, which ends up halfway between Ari Gold and Mike Francesa, is the best part of How To Make It In USA.
As with many indie web series, How To Make It In USA's characters are fictionalized versions of their respective actors
