Arachnophobes are in for a bit of a rough time, because streaming platforms and cinemas will be positively crawling with spider-based monster movies before you know it. Well, two, anyway. First up is French spider-thriller Infested (out now on Shudder), with Australian creature feature Sting creeping into cinemas on May 31st.
Also known as Vermines, Infested is the feature debut of French director Sebastien Vanicek. Set in present-day Paris, the film centres on hustler Kaleb (Theo Christine), who shares a flat with his sister Manon (Lisa Nyarko) in a run-down apartment building that’s home to several other multicultural tenants.

One of my favorite horror films of the year thus far, Infested pits an eclectic group of apartment tenants against rapidly reproducing spiders. As thought-provoking as it is palpably horrifying, Infested has now skittered onto Shudder, and I had the pleasure of catching up with director/co-writer Sébastien Vaniček in a video interview to discuss his new movie, including the spider-centric research that went into the making of the film's realistic effects, the movie's exploration of socioeconomic divisions, as well as the excellent performances from the cast, and Sébastien also shared his excitement for his upcoming Evil Dead movie!

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Sting was pitting an oversized spider against the inhabitants of an NYC apartment building. Now we have Infested, which pits the inhabitants of a French housing project against a horde of arachnids. Arachnids that the prologue implies are both deadly and in demand.
One of the people that demand comes from is Kaleb. He’s a young man trying to make a living hustling sneakers and whatever else he can make a quick profit from. It’s not exactly a thriving business, and he’s stuck living with his sister Manon in the rundown apartment they inherited from their mother. Adding to his unhappiness is a falling out with his long time friend Jordy.

In an odd quirk of distribution timing, this month has seen the arrival of no less than two imported, semi-comedic thrillers featuring decrepit apartment building invaded by giant spiders. Already playing U.S. theaters is the Australian “Sting,” which is fun, if formulaic. In a whole other class, however, is French “Infested,” a first feature by director Sebastien Vanicek following several impressive shorts. An instant minor genre classic, it is fun and then some — a conceptually unremarkable but resourceful, energetic, stylish and good-humored creature feature with above-average human character interest.
That achievement has been duly noted: Intended as a streaming premiere, “Vermines” (the original title) pleased its producer such that he apparently insisted on a home-turf theatrical release, despite the long delay that imposes on its launch in other formats under French law. It’s seen big-screen release in numerous nations since late last year, though in the U.S.

For movies about killer spiders, the things that are generally of primary concern are the size and the volume of the spiders. With that in mind, connoisseurs of this horror subgenre should be pleased to find that Sébastien Vaniček’s feature-length debut, Infested, delivers on both of those fronts. While the spiders here, a highly poisonous and aggressive desert species, may initially emerge at a deceptively normal size, they gradually balloon to larger proportions as they overwhelm an apartment block in a French banlieue. They’re also a rapidly reproducing breed, to the point where their offspring and their offspring’s offspring are eventually scampering all over the building’s walls, ceilings, air ducts, and residents.
In expected creature-feature form, Infested is quick to explain how these deadly arachnids made their journey to an unfamiliar urban environment. Following a frenzied opening in a patch of Middle Eastern desert where three...

Director Sébastien Vanicek’s debut feature Infested, a spider-filled French thriller that was formerly known as Vermin, won’t be released through the Shudder streaming service until April 26th, but it has already proved to be impressive enough to those who have already seen it (like Sam Raimi) that it landed Vanicek the job of directing the next Evil Dead movie. "If it wasn't a needle, what caused it?" Oh hell no!! Shudder has revealed the official US trailer for another extremely scary spider horror movie titled Infested - this one is from France. It's also arriving this spring, around same time as the other spider horror movie called Sting. Infested, originally known as Vermines in French, first premiered a the 2023 Venice Film Festival, with stops at Sitges, Fantasy Filmfest, L'Étrange, Splat!, Slash, and other genre film festivals around the world. Residents of a rundown French apartment building battle against an army of deadly, rapidly reproducing spiders. This is the film that supposedly used actual, real spiders to film with - though clearly there's a point where they become CGI and this gets even crazier. Infested weaves its eerie tale on Shudder starting April 26th. Starring Théo Christine, Finnegan Oldfield, Jérôme Niel, Sofia Lesaffre, and Lisa Nyarko. Yeah I'm way, way...

Grief is a concept that everyone with a heart can relate to, but it’s not always something that everyone with a brain can deal with. Riffing on Jean Cocteau’s 1950 classic Orphée and giving it a very modern makeover, French writer-director Jérémy Clapin explores that very paradox with Meanwhile on Earth, a strange, poetic, and endearingly surreal meditation on the counterintuitive ways in which we react when confronted with loss.
In a very literal way, Clapin has been here before, with his acclaimed and surprisingly poignant 2019 animated film I Lost My Body, in which the disembodied hand of a pizza delivery boy goes on a journey to find the rest of itself. This much more cryptic follow-up pushes the notion a whole lot further, and whether it works or not will be in the eye of the beholder.
The loss this time is felt by Elsa (Megan Northam), who...

In his review out of Fantastic Fest last year, Bloody Disgusting’s Trace Thurman raved that Infested (aka Vermines) is “one of the best spider attack movies in years,” noting in his 4-star review that the creature feature uses practical spiders – Real Spiders – as much as possible. The film has been acquired for U.S. release by Shudder, but we don’t yet have a date.
In the meantime, a brand new French teaser trailer for Infested has arrived this week, and trust us when we say it’s as creepy crawly as you’re probably afraid this one is going to be.
Sébastien Vaniček directed the upcoming Infested, which is set in the French projects.

Films starring Saoirse Ronan and Justice Smith are set for Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama section.
Panorama announced its first 11 titles on Thursday, seven of which are world premieres. The lineup includes Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Outrun,” which stars Ronan as an antihero who must embark on a journey to find herself. “After years of excess in London, she seeks silence and self-reflection in her Scottish homeland,” the film’s logline reads.
Directed by Jane Schoenbrun, “I Saw the TV Glow” — which stars Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine and Danielle Deadwyler, among others — is also part of the program. In a press release, the festival called the film “one of the most idiosyncratic and fascinating works of the year, effortlessly crossing boundaries of genre, gender and trauma in this eye- and soul-opening trip.”
The annual Panorama Audience Award will be presented on Feb. 25. Berlin Film Festival is set to take place beginning Feb.

Jérémy Clapin made a huge splash with his debut film J’ai perdu mon corps (the animated film premiered in the Cannes Critic’s Week in 2019) – but for his sophomore film he moved into live action with a cast comprised of Wim Willaert, Sofia Lesaffre, Megan Northam and Catherine Salée. Production on Pendant ce temps sur Terre (aka Meanwhile On Earth) took place in August of last year in the region of Clermont-Ferrand. Clapin reteams with producer One World Films’ Marc du Pontavice.

Horror movies like Deep Fear take place underground, and they are often the most effective as far as compelling scares go. They evoke a fear that everyone can understand. Trap someone in a confined, dark space below ground, then have them be pursued by someone (or something) — it’s a simple but winning formula.
Screambox‘s latest release Deep Fear, as well as the nine other movies below, reinforce feelings of claustrophobia and remind you of what possible evils could be hiding below the surface. As Above, So Below, The Descent, C.H.U.D., Creep and The Midnight Meat Train are all familiar examples of this subgenre, but this list focuses on underseen movies set underground.

After making a name for himself for a rather inventive (animated) tale of young love and true yearning, I Lost My Body filmmaker Jérémy Clapin is getting a bit more “hands-on” with his sophomore feature. Cineuropa reports that production has already began on Pendant ce temps sur Terre (which translates as meanwhile on earth) – with a cast comprised of Megan Northam, Sofia Lesaffre, Catherine Salée, Wim Willaert, Roman Williams. We had just reported on Megan Northam joining Mareike Engelhardt’s Rabia – which the actress will shoot next. Filming takes place in France, and Belgium. One World Films’ Marc du Pontavice is producing.…...

The beautiful and iconic city of Paris, France is well-known for art, fashion and culture, but beneath the city lies the not so pretty Paris catacombs, a network of tunnels that contain the remains of more than six million people. When basement walls collapsed around the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery, the residents of the cemetery were relocated to the underground catacombs sometime around 1786, and the tunnels were opened to the public in 1809. The 2014 horror film As Above, So Below actually obtained permission from the French authorities to film in the catacombs and tells the terrifying story of an archaeologist and her team who explore the tunnels with deadly results.

Comedy-drama is sixth feature from Belgian director Benoit Mariage after festival hits such as Les Convoyeurs Attendent and Cow-Boy.
Brussels-based Be for Films has taken world sales rights on Benoit Mariage’s new comedy-drama Habib about a young Belgian actor of Moroccan parentage who takes a role as Francis of Assisi in a bid to break the cycle of being typecast as an amiable Arab in mediocre films.
Getting into character is a challenge, however, when his father unexpectedly returns to Brussels from Morocco with his new wife for treatment for early-onset Alzheimer’s and Habib finds himself juggling the demands of his different milieu.

For an 80-minute action drama, "Earth And Blood" seems like a patchwork of genre-specific scenes set up to decidedly arrive at a set-piece climax of violence. Which is not saying much, because the action ending is hardly innovative in the entertainment quotient it manages to strike. The finale makes you realise you have just watched a compilation of action movie cliches and little else.
Julien Leclercq's new French film, with a translated title as fetching as "Earth And Blood", promised much -- especially if you had sampled its blazing trailer, or if your inner action addict came of age watching Luc Besson, Louis Leterrier or Olivier Megaton's simply irresistible bloodsoaked fare that influenced French violent cinema -- nay, cinema of violence anywhere in the world -- over the past decades.
Leclercq himself would perhaps find an indulgent nod in the club of new-age mainstream action titans from France,...

"An eye for an eye." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for a French crime thriller titled Earth and Blood, also known as La terre et le sang from its original French title. This is the latest film from director Julien Leclercq, it takes place in the heart of the mountains where a man and his daughter, Said and Sarah, run a sawmill family business hiring mostly ex-cons and young offenders, one of whom hid some drugs in the factory. Things get rough when the gang shows up for their missing drugs. Starring Sami Bouajila and Samy Seghir, with Carole Weyers, Eriq Ebouaney, Sofia Lesaffre, and Eric Kabongo. This is an intense trailer! That music definitely kicks things into high gear when it really gets going. A bit overkill? The story itself seems mostly generic but otherwise this looks good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Julien Leclercq's Earth and Blood,...

David Moreau, co-director of Ils/Them, turns artist Bruno Gazzotti’s best-selling French/Belgian comic book Seuls into a sci-fi thriller of gaelic proportions… Sounds like a match-made in [French] heaven right? Well a part of that statement is right.
After going to a funfair the night before, Leila wakes up in an empty city. Where are her parents? Where has everyone gone? Thinking she must be the sole survivor of an unthinkable catastrophe, she wanders the weirdly deserted streets. Until she meets four other mystified strangers. Together they hole up at a plush hotel, and set out to understand what has happened, why they are surrounded by gigantic boiling clouds and what these apocalyptic events actually mean.
