Disney announced earlier this year that Hocus Pocus 3 is definitely happening, with Anne Fletcher (Hocus Pocus 2) returning to direct and Jen D’Angelo back to write the script.
But what’s the status on Hocus Pocus 3, now that we’re one year removed from the premiere of Hocus Pocus 2? D’Angelo provides a fresh update to Entertainment Weekly.
“We’re still in the story phase, we’re still working on it. We’ve been working on some ideas, and it’s been fun to dive back into that world and we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore,” D’Angelo tells the outlet. She continues, “We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s mother witch.”

The collectible makers at Funko have created a large line of Pop figures based on Hocus Pocus 2. There are, of course, all three Sanderson sisters, but also the new characters Cassie, Becca, Izzy, and Gilbert. Surprisingly, a new Billy Butcherson figure isn’t in the line-up. But there is The Witch Mother – and while the other Hocus Pocus 2 POPs will be available wherever POPs are sold, the Witch Mother figure will only be available through the Funko website. So if you want to get your hands on this one, head over to Funko.com before all the Witch Mother figures are sold!
ThatHashtagShow informs, “The Witch Mother plays a brief but significant role in the Disney feature Hocus Pocus 2. The character, portrayed by Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, meets the Sanderson sisters when they’re still children. Sensing witchy potential in young Winifred, the Witch Mother gives the sisters their iconic spellbook.

Disney just announced a few days ago that Hocus Pocus 3 is definitely happening, and now The Wrap reports that Anne Fletcher (Hocus Pocus 2) is returning to direct.
Hocus Pocus 2 writer Jen D’Angelo is also back to write the third movie’s script.
Hocus Pocus 2 was a massive hit for the Disney+ streaming service this past Halloween, setting streaming records and all but ensuring that a second sequel wouldn’t be far behind.
In an interview with THR last October, Hocus Pocus 2 producer Adam Shankman had teased the potential for follow-up projects, which could center on the sequel’s new characters. Disney’s sequel Hocus Pocus 2 was a massive hit for the Disney+ streaming service this past Halloween, setting streaming records and proving that the franchise is now more popular than ever before. As you might have guessed, Hocus Pocus 3 won’t be far behind.
Disney’s Sean Bailey flat out confirms to The New York Times in a new profile piece that just went up over the weekend, “Yes, Hocus Pocus 3 is happening.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the continuation of the franchise, which kicked off way back in 1993. The Sanderson sisters are coming back!
In an interview with The New York Times, Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production confirmed that “Hocus Pocus 3” is in the works. While the Disney executive didn’t confirm any further details, he made the reveal during the interview while discussing the success of the live-action, “The Little Mermaid”, and while confirming the live-action versions of, “Moana”, “Lilo & Stich” and “Hercules”.
“Hocus Pocus 2″ found success last year after it was released on Disney+. The film, which starred Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker, saw them reprising their roles as Winifred, Mary and Sarah Sanderson respectively — almost 30 years after the release of the original film.
The new film, which found the trio resurrected once again by a group of teen friends — Becca (Whitney Peak), Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo) — who light a new version of the infamous Black Flame Candle.

This Halloween, we're throwing it back to the 1990s. We've hand-picked some pop culture '90s icons who would make like, totally easy costumes. Think: Spice Girls; Romy and Michele from "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," Tia Landry and Tamera Campbell from "Sister, Sister," Will and Carlton from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"; Alex Mack from "The Secret World of Alex Mack"; Clarissa Darling from "Clarissa Explains It All"; and Cory, Shawn, and Topanga from "Boy Meets World."
And if you're still celebrating the release of "Hocus Pocus 2," you can dress up as the Sanderson Sisters. "Hocus Pocus 2" was released on Disney+ on Sept. 30, and it stars Whitney Peak, Lilia Buckingham, and Belissa Escobedo as the three teenage girls who set the movie's events into motion. You can also go as Wednesday Addams from "The Addams Family" to celebrate the upcoming Netflix series, "Wednesday," starring Jenna Ortega,...

"Hocus Pocus" has become synonymous with Halloween for many. The 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters is a mainstay, marking spooky season in households across the nation - including Belissa Escobedo's. "I watched it every year growing up. It's mine and my mom's favorite movie," she tells Popsugar. The Mexican American actress plays Izzy, one of the main characters in "Hocus Pocus 2." "Her optimism and her need to make a joke in every situation" are some of the traits Escobedo shares with her onscreen character, along with her "true loyalty."

When the team behind Hocus Pocus 2 decided to embark upon a sequel to the beloved Halloween film, they faced the challenge of trying to figure out how to capture what people loved about the original movie while not repeating the same story from 1993.
“It’s a constant pull,” director Anne Fletcher told The Hollywood Reporter at the Hocus Pocus 2 premiere in New York last month. “You’re thinking as you’re developing the script and putting it up on its feet and creating the sets, the costumes, the cast. You’re constantly thinking what would fans love to see, what would feel too repetitious, what would be just the right amount of spice that the fans would love, so it was constantly on my mind. If you're on the fence about watching "Hocus Pocus 2," Hannah Waddingham's cameo is more than enough reason to slam that "play" button. The British Emmy winner stars in the Disney sequel as Mother Witch, a silver-haired sorceress who gives the Sanderson sisters their spellbook. Despite her pivotal role in the trio's villain origin story - I mean, who would they be without Bookie? - Waddingham's Mother Witch has criminally limited screen time that clocks in at less than five minutes.
Performance-length concerns aside, let's unpack and appreciate Waddingham's masterpiece of a scene, shall we? When a young Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson flee Salem, Ma, to the Forbidden Woods, they encounter a red-and-black-feathered bird that swoops down from a tree branch and transforms into Mother Witch. With glowing eyes, curly hair, and silver face gems, she's a mesmerizing sight to behold in the otherwise drab forest.

The Sanderson sisters are back and bewitching as ever in “Hocus Pocus 2”, the long-awaited sequel to the 1993 Halloween classic.
Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker reprise their roles as Winnifred, Mary and Sarah Sanderson, respectively, in the new film, which finds the trio resurrected once again by a group of teen friends — Becca (Whitney Peak), Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo) — who light a new version of the infamous Black Flame Candle.
However, when they return to wreak havoc on Salem — this time seeking revenge on the town’s mayor, a descendant of the puritanical reverend who originally exiled them (both played by Tony Hale) — they find that a few things have changed.
For one, the Sanderson Witch Museum has been reopened as a magic shop, run by a man named Gilbert (Sam Richardson), who claims to have witnessed the witches’ first night of mayhem back in the ’90s.

Salem may never be free of witchery, especially when it comes to the Sanderson sisters from “Hocus Pocus.” When they first came to Salem to wreak havoc on the town and claim the lives of children to stay young and beautiful, it was 1993, 300 years after they were initially hung for draining the life source of one Emily Binx. Just in the nick of time, Winifred Sanderson cast a curse that ensured the return of the tricky trio. All it took was some airhead virgin lighting a candle.
“Hocus Pocus 2” sees the return of the witches alongside some new characters. A black cat named Cobweb reminds us of Thackery Binx from the first film. Chaos ensues as the Sanderson sisters try to accomplish their original goal in 2022, with iPhones, a Walgreens, Rumba vacuum cleaners and more.

Hocus Pocus has had quite an afterlife. It’s been 29 years since a virgin first lit the black flame candle, resurrecting a trio of Salem witches and igniting the breathless disdain of film critics. An overboiling cauldron of garish performances, baroque plotting, and immortal cats, the 1993 Disney comedy was called “an unholy mess” by The New York Times, while the venerable critic Roger Ebert said the film was “desperately in need of self-discipline”. But this October the Disney-run US channel Freeform will air Hocus Pocus 13 times across 31 days. One studio’s mess is a wholly owned subsidiary’s black magic.

It’s unlikely even Disney knew they had a classic Halloween scene on their hands when they put microphones in front of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, and said “sing.” Yet the original Hocus Pocus of 1993 conjured real magic from the moment Midler teased, “I put a spell on you, and now you’re mine” to the scene’s finale in which Midler cursed all the adults of Salem to dance until they die! Thirty years on, that spell endures still, making the scene and the movie it’s borne from a stone cold holiday classic.
Hence Hocus Pocus 2’s fundamental dilemma.
Redoing such iconography is always the greatest intimidation, yet biggest audience expectation, that comes with remakes, reboots, and legacy sequels. And it’s a kind of credit to Hocus Pocus 2 that the movie is unafraid of going full tilt for it. In fact,...

When we think of classic Halloween movies, "Hocus Pocus" immediately comes to mind. Even though the hilarious and quirky movie is 29 years old, many of us still love quoting it today.
In fact, Disney offered fans a "Hocus Pocus" sequel in 2018 when it released the "Hocus Pocus & the All-New Sequel" book, which takes places 25 years after the events in the 1993 movie. Amok, amok, amok! Something wicked this way comes in the form of a "Hocus Pocus" sequel. The original film premiered back in 1993, but now, almost 30 years later, we're heading back to Salem for more Halloween hijinks. On Sept. 9 at D23 Expo, Disney shared a new trailer for the movie, which revealed some things about the plot. A trio of girls living in Salem get a candle from the proprietor of their local witchy store. When they light it, trying to awaken their own magic powers, they instead bring back the Sanderson Sisters, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. The sisters soon plunge Salem into chaos once again.
On Sept. 14, a new clip was released, showing the sisters hilariously taking to the sky using whatever they can find in a store. Sarah uses a Swiffer, while Mary finds a robotic vacuum cleaner. Meanwhile, Winifred sticks to the traditional broom.

Plot: It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve.
Review: For three decades, fans have clamored for a sequel to Hocus Pocus. The Disney film has maintained a cult following thanks to a cheeky blend of humor and scares appropriate for all ages. While a sequel was released in the form of a 2018 novel that directly followed the plot and characters of the original movie, it took until now for Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy to reunite on screen as the Sanderson Sisters. Under the direction of Anne Fletcher, Hocus Pocus 2 was guaranteed to be a hit this Halloween season regardless of the quality of the film.

The Sanderson sisters are back! Almost thirty years ago, Hocus Pocus introduced a trio of memorable Salem witches who wreaked havoc on Halloween night when accidentally resurrected by the Black Flame Candle. The candle gets lit once more in the long-awaited sequel, Hocus Pocus 2, introducing a new generation to the enchanting world of Halloween witchery. Nearly three decades later, the Sanderson sisters still cast a magical spell, offering nostalgic callbacks with a modern take on sisterhood.
It’s Halloween in Salem. High school student Becca (Whitney Peak) picks up last-minute supplies from a local witchcraft store. Store owner Gilbert (Sam Richardson) regales a costumed audience with tales of infamous Salem witches Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary Sanderson (Kathy Najimy). As the latest straight-to-streaming movie for Disney+, Hocus Pocus 2 has no reason for its existence other than to keep people on the platform after their annual viewing of Hocus Pocus (1993). A by-the-numbers rehash powered by commendable enthusiasm from its main cast, it’s just good enough to satisfy fans, but won’t earn the Sanderson Sisters any new admirers.
The original cult film found the coven of Winifred, Sarah, and Mary whisked from 1600s Salem to the modern day, where their desire to feast on children’s souls was thwarted by a couple tykes on Halloween night. Nearly 30 years later, the film resurrects the sisters once again after a duplicitous magic shop owner tricks a few teenagers into lighting a black candle during their Halloween spell-casting.
The film is basically 90 minutes of fish-out-of-water gags — the sisters are vexed by automatic doors, delighted by Roombas and oddly unmoved by cellphone...

Over the past three decades, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy have become unexpected camp Halloween icons — a status earned by endless Disney Channel and cable reruns of "Hocus Pocus," Kenny Ortega's 1993 fantasy family comedy that most will fondly look back upon as a stone-cold childhood classic. The reality is that "Hocus Pocus" is just all right — a movie buoyed by the charisma of its stars and by Ortega's own musical theatre chops.
But at this point, the ardor for "Hocus Pocus" has taken a life of its own, burying the movie's actual quality underneath Halloween festivals, drag shows, and karaoke singalongs. "Hocus Pocus" has become more iconography than movie, and its sequel, "Hocus Pocus 2," is a direct result of that.

What strange sorcery is this that “Hocus Pocus” — a so-so comedy turned campy cult favorite starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as absolutely fabulous Salem witch sisters — should be getting a sequel nearly three decades after its 1993 release? At the time, Variety speculated that, were it not for the film’s three stars, “‘Hocus Pocus’ wouldn’t seem out of place on the Disney Channel, and perhaps belongs there.” In a sense, that’s what’s happened with this follow-up, aimed to breathe some life into the graveyard that is Disney+.
The sequel’s existence owes less to popular demand (the original earned a respectable 39.3 million stateside and went on to become a Halloween season staple) than to the realization that the film had tapped into preteens’ fascination with witchcraft before Harry Potter came along. It can be no coincidence that the new feature lifts so much...

There isn’t a lot that can go wrong when you put three fabulous character actresses onscreen together, but you have to give them a little something to work with. “Hocus Pocus 2” — the sequel to one of the most beloved Halloween comedies of all time — didn’t even have to be very good to get people to watch it. Anyone who grew up in the ’90s watches the original at least once in October. This year, the fun continues with a totally satisfactory sequel that brings the Sanderson sisters back to life one more time. Ok, so the plot is basically the same and the jokes mere updates to the original. Why mess with a good thing when you can simply recreate it?

Twenty-nine years ago, the Sanderson sisters, an abrasive trio of siblings, put a spell on Disney audiences. Or at least they tried to.
Kenny Ortega’s Hocus Pocus wasn’t initially met with critical or even commercial acclaim, but over the years the entertainingly odd Halloween film has gained a cult following. A few years back, original Hocus Pocus star Thora Birch had expressed interest in returning for the sequel, which is now coming to Disney+ this Friday, September 30. Birch, however, isn’t back in Hocus Pocus 2 alongside the other legacy stars from the original classic, and the actress explains why in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight that went live this week.
The reason Thora Birch isn’t in Hocus Pocus 2? Scheduling issues.
Thora Birch tells Entertainment Tonight, “I was just a little dismayed I wasn’t able to make it. I was working on something else when they were filming. Otherwise I was definitely going to be there on set with the girls.”
“I can’t wait to see what they do with it,” Birch continues, “I know they’re taking a completely different, fresh approach, so I’m excited.”

For years, there was talk about making a sequel to the 1993 cult favorite Hocus Pocus. After spending some time in development hell, Hocus Pocus 2 finally made it into production recently and is now set to be released through the Disney+ streaming service on September 30th. Unfortunately, when the sequel did get made, it happened to be at a time when the first film’s cast member Thora Birch was too busy to participate.
According to Collider, Birch’s character Dani Dennison was originally supposed to have a prominent role in Hocus Pocus 2, where she would have teamed up with a group of teenagers to battle the returning trio of witches, the Sanderson Sisters. But there was a scheduling issue – and speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Birch told them she was “dismayed” she had to miss out on the movie.

It was a family affair for Sarah Jessica Parker at the “Hocus Pocus 2” premiere Tuesday night. Parker hit the red carpet for the first look at the long-anticipated sequel with her husband, Matthew Broderick, and their twin daughters Tabitha and Marion, 13.
Parker nearly matched the purple carpet in a pink and silver ensemble that saw the “And Just Like That…” actress in a sparkling tunic, adorned with a floral design, which featured blue, purple and pink accents. She topped the tunic over light pink harem pants, completing the look with a pair of magenta pumps and a navy blue clutch.
For his part, Broderick went dapper in a brown, tweed suit, while their daughters opted for a pair of gorgeous gowns — one mimicking Parker’s color palette, while the other dressed in black.

"If we intend to live past sunrise, we have to steal their souls!" Disney has debuted the second trailer for Hocus Pocus 2, arriving 29 years after the original movie became a fan favorite. The three witches are back for more fun - and souls: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy reunite for this sequel. The live-action, long awaited follow-up to the perennial Halloween classic, which brings back the delightfully wicked Sanderson Sisters for more mayhem, will debut on Disney+ at the end of September just in time for Halloween season. The sisters return to modern day Salem, and three friends must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches. Hocus Pocus 2's cast also features Doug Jones, Whitney Peak, Lilia Buckingham, Belisa Escobedo, Hannah Waddingham, Tony Hale, Sam Richardson, Juju Brener, Froy Gutierrez, Nina Kitchen, and Taylor Paige Henderson. This definitely does look like a direct-to-tv sequel most of us should avoid.

Fresh off of Disney’s presentation at the D23 Expo comes a brand-new trailer for Hocus Pocus 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the classic Halloween movie. The trailer delves into the origins of Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary (Kathy Najimy), who seem to receive their first lessons from a very witchy Hannah Waddingham.
The glimpse we see of younger versions of the Sanderson Sisters confirms what director Anne Fletcher teased several weeks ago.
The opening sequence of the movie, we get some history of our witches and Billy. We get a little kiss — pardon the pun — of the Billy aspect of it and the world that they lived in and what happened to the witches. I always missed that in the first one. Like, what are the witches the way they are? I did have that question, and the script came, and I loved the opening 1600s.
The glimpse we see of younger versions of the Sanderson Sisters confirms what director Anne Fletcher teased several weeks ago.
