“Ozark” star Tom Pelphrey did not believe he would get nominated for a Primetime Emmy this year. Even though he watched the nominations announcement from Berlin, Germany, with his partner Kaley Cuoco, he was doing so mainly to see whether Cuoco would land another bid for her series “The Flight Attendant” — and she did. “We were very excited, started celebrating,” recounted Pelphrey in a new webchat with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive interview above), adding, “Then, we sort of walked away from the computer and we were FaceTiming with her friends and family.” It was not until 10 minutes later that he, through a phone call from the United States, learned that he himself had earned a citation for Best Drama Guest Actor, a category that is notably not presented during the main announcement. “I picked up, and they said, ‘You got nominated for an Emmy!’ I was shocked. And then obviously very,...

After stealing Season 3 of “Ozark” as Ben Davis, Wendy’s (Laura Linney) bipolar brother, Tom Pelphrey was poised to nab his maiden Primetime Emmy nomination in 2020 — or so we thought. Even as the Netflix show racked up its most citations ever for a single season with 18, Pelphrey was omitted from the TV academy’s Best Drama Supporting Actor lineup. But thanks to his surprising guest appearance in the show’s fourth and final installment, he is now back in Emmy contention for the gritty crime drama and ready to avenge his egregious snub.
The actor turns up in the farewell season’s 10th episode, “You’re the Boss,” which was directed by Emmy contender Melissa Hickey and opens with a flashback to the night Ben was executed. It picks up right where we last saw him in Season 3’s “Fire Pink” and depicts the moments leading up to his death,...

Alfonso Herrera joined the cast of Netflix’s “Ozark” for its fourth and final season in the role of Javier “Javi” Elizonndro, a previously unseen member of the Navarro family who walks a fine line between being an obedient lieutenant and scheming to take over his uncle Omar’s (Felix Solis) cartel. Though his ruthless, murderous character could have easily been reduced to his villainous traits, it was important to the actor to imbue him with multifarious layers. “Once I was starting to create, or to build, this character, I understood, or I tried to see, that he was a very lonely guy,” Herrera tells Gold Derby in a new exclusive video interview (watch above). “He was a person that was rejected by his family, was rejected by his inner circle, his inner entourage of family. Even in its fourth and final season — whose two parts debuted January 21 and April 29, respectively — Netflix’s “Ozark” saw numerous additions to its already sprawling cast. “Each season of ‘Ozark’ is almost like starting over because you kill so many people that you have these huge new characters that are going to carry big arcs,” casting director Alexa Fogel tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview (watch above).
Indeed, after the third season saw Janet McTeer‘s Helen Pierce and Tom Pelphrey‘s Ben Davis, among other characters, bite the dust, the fourth introduces a slew of new faces. Those include Alfonso Herrera as Javier “Javi” Elizonndro and Veronica Falcón as Herrera’s onscreen mother, Camila Elizonndro, who thereby play the nephew and sister, respectively, of cartel boss Omar Navarro (Felix Solis). “There are so many outrageous things that take place [on the show], but the style has to be completely naturalistic,...

This article contains spoilers for all of Ozark.
There are a lot of evil people on Ozark. The Navarro cartel was filled with your stereotypical drug villains. Morally corrupt federal agent Roy Petty (Jason Butler Harner) served as a hateable antagonist in the first couple of seasons. Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) was the type of old hag you love to despise. Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer) showed the result of what the Byrdes would eventually become. But no person in the show was more frequently loathsome than Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney).
Wendy made decisions for four seasons that put her family and others in grave danger, even giving the go-ahead to the cartel to murder her own brother at the end of the third season. She was always ready to sacrifice anybody and everybody in the name of “getting out” and “saving her family”. Sounds a bit familiar, right? Wendy seemed...

When the final season of “Ozark” begins, Wendy (Laura Linney) lays the family’s cards on the table. Hearing one too many wisecracks from Jonah (Skylar Gaertner), who’s still understandably upset over his uncle’s death, she snaps.
“You want to be a smart ass? You want to hate me? Fine,” she says. “[But] with our foundation — everything this family has sacrificed, everything — it’s going to at least give us the power to do whatever good we want to do. We can be the most powerful family in the Midwest, with the full endorsement of the FBI to boot.”
“People will find out where the money came from,” Jonah says, not yet backing down.
“You need to grow up,” Wendy replies. “This is America. People don’t care where your fortune came from, and in two election cycles, it’ll be just some myth,...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for all seasons of “Ozark”
Leading up to the January premiere of “Ozark” Season 4 Part 1, showrunner Chris Mundy explained the decision to split the final season in half: a typical 10-episode season wouldn’t be enough to wrap up the story, but airing more than 10 at once would risk overwhelming the audience. The solution, he told TheWrap, was to make two 7-episode seasons that felt complete, “even though it’s all on one continuum.”
Minutes into Season 4 Part 1, it’s clear why this bifurcation was necessary. Every second of screen time is stuffed to the gills with plot; blink and you might miss a character death, new alliance, or so-crazy-it-just-might-work Marty Byrde scheme. The penultimate chapter of the blue-tinted money laundering drama began with a glimpse into an uncertain – and potentially deadly – future for the Byrdes, and ended similarly for Ruth (Julia Garner).

The Byrde family makes one last effort to escape their criminal empire in the Season 4 Part 2 trailer of “Ozark.” The series will come to an explosive finish on April 29 when the final seven episodes debut on Netflix.
According to the official logline: “Marty and Wendy are rid of Helen and climb to the top of Navarro’s empire. They find another opportunity to get out of the Ozarks but some past sins won’t stay buried and the most dangerous threats come from blood.”
In the trailer, Marty (Jason Bateman) fears for the survival of his family as Ruth (Julia Garner) seeks revenge. “I’m just sick of having blood on my hands, Wendy. It doesn’t bother you?” Marty says, to which Wendy (Laura Linney) responds, “You’re so desperate to be the good guy.”

At the end of “Ozark” Season 3, Marty and Wendy Byrde were splattered and soaked in blood and brains; just the cost of doing business with a ruthless drug cartel. As the psychically traumatized married couple picked the bones and brain tissue out of their hair—that of their rival Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer), the attorney that represented the Navarro drug cartel—the pair silently considered the long road of (semi) good intentions that got them to this hellish place.

‘Ozark’ Review: Season 4, Part 1 Questions If There’s Enough Good Left to Bury the Bad (No Spoilers)
When “Ozark” started telling its story (back in July 2017), the rough question surrounding the Byrde family was, “How in God’s name are they still alive?” Fans very well may have asked themselves that question a dozen times over the first 10 episodes, as showrunner Chris Mundy’s propulsive crime thriller kept setting up impervious obstacles, and the ever-resourceful Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) kept finding creative ways around them. But in the following seasons, as their collective foot eased off the accelerator, Netflix’s Emmy-winning original series began positing subjective queries oft-heard in other antihero tales, like “Are the Byrdes beyond redemption?” and “What’s left of this marriage — of this family, these lives — to save?”
After dwelling on these quandaries for nearly five years — amid sporadic bursts of momentum — we’ve arrived: the final season. Playing out over a super-sized 14 episodes and split into two parts, “Ozark...

Warning: contains major spoilers for Ozark season 3.
Wendy Byrde may sound like the name of a cutesy cartoon character, but don’t let that fool you. Inside Laura Linney’s Ozark character beats the heart of an ambitious schemer with a taste for chaos. In seasons one and two, Marty’s wife Wendy was a reluctant passenger on the Byrde family journey into money laundering for a Mexican drug cartel, but in season three, she took the wheel.
It was always in her. The arrival of Wendy’s troubled younger brother Ben (Tom Pelphrey) in season three opened a window into her past. Wendy Davis had been a tough, wayward teen from a poor background who got her kicks breaking into empty houses and messing with rich people’s things. On a return trip to Chicago in the season three opener, she broke into the Byrdes’ former home and pulled her old tricks.

Netflix has debuted a trailer for Part 1 of the fourth and final season of “Ozark,” which premieres on Jan. 21.
The series stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney as Marty and Wendy Byrde, who get entangled with the local criminals of the Ozarks in Missouri after moving there to continue their money laundering scheme. Season 4 will follow the couple after the killing of Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer), an attorney for the Navarro drug cartel. Omar Navarro (Felix Solis) brings Marty and Wendy further into the operation while they try to escape the Ozarks, but their past continues to haunt them.
“The Navarro cartel has been made aware that you intend to start producing heroin again,” Marty says to Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) in the trailer. “They have instructed us to warn you their response is gonna be quick, and it’s gonna be brutal.”
“We’re just the messengers here,” adds Wendy.

As Helen Pierce, the ruthless attorney for Mexico’s Navarro drug cartel, Janet McTeer made a lasting impression with her blood-curdling performance in the third season of “Ozark.” The actress missed out on a Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy nomination last year, but don’t be surprised if she makes the cut this year. Janet McTeer is the sort of interview subject that when you get them on the phone they are more interested in talking to you than the preassigned subject. That’s not to say McTeer isn’t proud of her work on “Ozark,” but she had a reputation as an ego-less interview for decades. And in a pandemic where many stars have let their hair or guard down for one reason or another, she’s the same charming Janet McTeer who won over awards season nine years ago when on the campaign trail for “Albert Nobbs.”

For her portrayal of Ruth Langmore on Netflix’s “Ozark,” Julia Garner won her first Emmy last year, in Best Drama Supporting Actress. With “Ozark’s” third season having dropped on March 27, she is now in the hunt for the statuette once again and would be just the seventh back-to-back winner in this category and the first since 2014.
The six thespians who achieved this feat before her are Ellen Corby for “The Waltons” (1975-76), Nancy Marchand for “Lou Grant” (1980-82), Bonnie Bartlett for “St. Elsewhere” (1986-87), Allison Janney for “The West Wing” (2000-01), Blythe Danner for “Huff” (2005-06) and Anna Gunn for “Breaking Bad” (2013-14). Netflix’s beloved crime drama “Ozark” now has three seasons under its belt, so how much longer can the series last? It’s a question Collider recently posed to series star and director Jason Bateman while discussing “Ozark” Season 3, which debuted March 27 to the best reviews of the series so far. The season ended in bloodshed as crime lord Navarro murdered lawyer Helen Pierce in front of Marty and Wendy Byrde. The show now heads into Season 4 with the Byrde family firmly under the grasp of a criminal empire. The only problem is that Netflix has yet to greenlight the next season of “Ozark,” although based on the show’s popularity it’s most likely a no-brainer. Bateman said the cast and crew have every intention of continuing.
“There is not an official pickup for Season 4,” Bateman said to Collider. “We’re all operating under the hope it will happen.

“Yeah, it’s not something I do on a daily basis,” actress Janet McTeer says about getting waterboarded, which is how “Ozark” finds her as it opens its third season. Watch our exclusive video interview above. This new season of the crime drama that Netflix recently released in its entirety fleshes out McTeer’s cartel lawyer Helen Pierce by moving her daughter to the eponymous setting and increasing Helen’s involvement in the business of the leads played by Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. She adds, “It’s not fun to be tortured.”

Two major challenges loomed over Janet McTeer when approaching the third season of “Ozark.” One came with her promotion to series regular, as Helen Pierce, the Navarro drug cartel’s imposing attorney, grew from a mysterious representative for her boss’ malevolent bidding to a flesh-and-blood human being with lives both professional and personal. How could McTeer retain Helen’s frightening aura when the curtain was pulled back on her most relatable moments?

“Ozark” made a triumphant return to Netflix this month with a third season that made for the series’ strongest run yet. The Season 3 finale ends in a shocking moment of bloodshed after the crime lord Navarro shoots and kills Helen Pierce, played for two seasons by Janet McTeer. Helen’s blood splatters over Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney), who are then embraced by Navarro and told this is only the beginning of their partnership. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Ozark” showrunner Chris Mundy broke down the Season 3 finale and explained why Helen had to die in those final moments.

Ozark returns on Friday, March 27, and although the Byrdes are all in, as the slogan promises, they also get hard doses of reality.
Something about Ozark makes the absurdity of their situation -- a middle-class family assuming the roles of major criminals -- feel all too real.
Desperation has forced decisions onto the Byrdes that they never imagined, and by the time Ozark Season 3 begins, they've found their groove.
During Ozark Season 2, Wendy (Laura Linney) found a mentor in Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer), the cunning cartel attorney who acted as the Byrde's handler and go-between.
Since then, the tension that was evident between Wendy and Marty (Jason Bateman) has become a giant rift. While they continue to work side-by-side in the booming casino business, growing their laundering empire, Marty still imagines a time when they can leave it all behind.
Wendy's increased confidence enables her to gain the ear of...

Like an FBI Agent on the take, “Ozark” is a crime drama working against itself. The Netflix original series from creators Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams, steered by showrunner Chris Mundy, tracks a family on the run, except there’s nowhere for the Byrdes to go. Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) made a deal with the devil when they agreed to launder money for a Mexican drug cartel, and their insurmountable debt is steadily drowning them both. “Ozark” rightly sees its core married couple as dead folks walking, and yet it still has to find believable, evocative, and compelling ways to keep them alive and kicking for one or two or 10 more seasons. (Please don’t let this be the first Netflix series to last 12 seasons.)
Season 1 relied on shock and awe to great effect, throwing audiences into the deep end of the pool while knowing it was a one-way trip.

The trailer for “Ozark” Season 3 opens with Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) commuting by Bayliner to his family’s new money-laundering venture, a riverboat casino. Shortly thereafter, it cuts to Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) pointing a gun at her hubby.
Yeah, the Byrdes have problems, which is probably why they have hired marriage counselor Sue Shelby (Marylouise Burke) to help them sort through a very unique situation. There’s just one problem with Sue’s impartial professional advice: Marty is bribing her.
Shortly thereafter, in case it wasn’t absolutely crystal clear that Shelby is the Netflix show’s resident couples therapist, Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) tells Marty, “I’m not your f—ing marriage counselor.”

Marty and Wendy Byrde’s chaotic adventures will resume this spring, Netflix announced Wednesday, with the third season of Ozark premiering on Friday, March 27.
Here’s what we can expect from the drama’s third outing, according to Netflix: “It’s six months later, the casino is up and running, but Marty and Wendy are fighting for control of the family’s destiny. Marty preaches keeping the status quo. Aided by an alliance with Helen and drug cartel leader Omar Navarro, Wendy plots for expansion. But when Wendy’s brother Ben comes into town, everyone’s lives are thrown into chaos.

Our Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy odds currently have Julia Garner out front to win for “Ozark,” but her co-star Janet McTeer, who joined the gritty Netflix drama in its second season, is back in 14th place. While McTeer appears to be a longshot with 100/1 odds, here are four reasons why you shouldn’t underestimate her:
1. “Ozark’s” five Emmy nominations last year
Netflix released the first season of “Ozark” in July 2017, so nearly an entire year before the 2018 Emmys. Keeping that, and the stacked drama field, in mind, its five nominations were an impressive feat, especially if you consider where it ended up hitting: Jason Bateman not only crashed the Best Drama Actor lineup, but also managed to sneak into Best Drama Directing (“The Toll”) alongside co-director Daniel Sackheim (“Tonight We Improvise”). It also got nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.

As of this writing, Gold Derby’s racetrack odds peg nominations for Bateman and Linney and a victory for Garner, with Mullan in seventh place to receive a bid. Then there’s new cast member Janet McTeer as Helen Pierce, who’s also a dark horse contender for a supporting actress nom.

Today Jason Bateman turned out to be a double threat Emmy nominee for his Netflix/Media Rights Capital noir series Ozark, not just earning a nomination for lead actor in a drama series, but also for directing as well.
While Bateman has continually been lauded for his comedy acting chops throughout the years, largely for Arrested Development (Tbd on whether the comedy series will season 6; the series season 5 received zero love from Emmy voters), it’s arguably the first time that he’s been recognized in the directing arena, and he’s been exercising that creative muscle for quite some time not just with indie features such as The Family Fang and Bad Words, but going as far back to the late ’80s when he directed episodes for NBC’s Valerie, a sitcom on which he also starred.

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Jason Bateman's fantastic and brutal series Ozark. The first season of this show was so freakin' good and every episode kept me on the edge of my seat. It seems like it's been forever since I watched it so I might have to give it another go before I jump back into this crazy dark criminal underworld in Season 2.

The Byrdes are back. Netflix released a first-look teaser announcing that the second season of Ozark starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney will return for your bingeing pleasure on August 31.
The 40-second teaser for the crime drama — watch it above — gives us flashes of the second season that features a voice-over of Linney’s Wendy saying, “We’ve done lots of things, things we said we would never do,” to which Bateman’s Marty replies, “People make choices, Wendy. Choices have consequences.” The show also stars Julia Garner and Season 2 newcomer Janet McTeer.
There are plenty of dark, foreboding moments and, well, some more dark, foreboding moments in the teaser before it finally ends with a gunshot and Wendy saying: “So that’s it? We go back in that house, we go to bed, wake up in the morning and we kiss the kids?”
Marty responds, “That’s exactly what we do.
