Miami, Feb 21 (Ians) Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are fit and ready to play for Inter Miami in the club’s opening match of the Major League Soccer season against Real Salt Lake City, manager Gerardo Martino said.
The former Barcelona teammates will be the headline acts in Wednesday night’s clash at Inter Miami’s renamed Chase stadium in Fort Lauderdale, though they are not guaranteed starters.
“Messi and Suarez are ready to play, if 90 minutes are required, we will see this depending on the team’s needs,” Martino told a news conference.
Messi missed much of Inter Miami’s pre-season because of an adductor strain while Suarez has overcome a knee problem.
The other half of Inter Miami’s contingent of former Barcelona stars – defender Jordi Alba and midfielder Sergio Busquets – will also be available after recovering from recent injury concerns, reports Xinhua.

Washington, Aug 16 (Ians) Lionel Messi continued his prolific scoring form with a superb first-half strike as Inter Miami reached the Leagues Cup final with a 4-1 away win over Philadelphia Union.
Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez gave the hosts the lead in the third minute at Subaru Park when he ran onto Sergii Kryvtsov’s pass and slotted a cool finish past goalkeeper Andre Blake, reports Xinhua.
Martinez then turned provider as he found Messi in space, allowing the Argentine World Cup winner to stream forward before rifling a low 30-yard drive into the far corner.
Messi’s former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba made it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime when he pounced on Robert Taylor’s through ball and dribbled into the area before finishing with a lofted shot over the lunging Blake.
Alejandro Bedoya reduced the deficit by firing home from close range after goalkeeper Drake Callender failed to deal with a corner.

Madrid (Spain), Aug 8 (Ians) As defending champions of La Liga, Fc Barcelona, coached by Xavi Hernandez, will be the team to beat this season. However, several factors could hinder Barca’s title defense and their ambitions in Europe.
The primary point of discussion ahead of the new campaign is that Barca won’t be hosting games at Camp Nou Stadium. Due to significant renovations, they’ll play at the Olympic Stadium, which seats just under 56,000, far less than Camp Nou’s 99,000. Consequently, many fans won’t see games in person, and a running track around the field will distance players from fans, potentially affecting the home advantage.
The Camp Nou has always been a stronghold for Barca. But with the Olympic Stadium not offering the same aura, coupled with potential pitch quality concerns, it may impact Barca’s game play, a Xinhua report said.

Madrid, Aug 7 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga kicks off a new season under its fresh official name this weekend. Yet, the ‘new’ Liga EA Sports is expected to witness the same teams vying for the title, with Fc Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid emerging as the principal contenders.
It, however, marks the dawn of a different era for the reigning champions, Fc Barcelona. With seasoned players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets exiting the club during the summer, the addition of Ilkay Gundogan, Oriol Romeu, and Inigo Martinez should ably fill the void.
Ousmane Dembele’s surprising move to Paris Saint Germain raised eyebrows, and unless Barca secure another signing or Ansu Fati returns to form, their attacking strength, where Robert Lewandowski is about to turn 35, might falter.

Madrid, June 17 (Ians) The Spanish national team will look to claim their first UEFA Nations League title when they play Croatia in Rotterdam on Sunday.
The Spanish booked a consecutive appearance in the final with an impressive 2-1 win against Italy on Thursday, with a display of controlled football in midfield and pace in attack.
Substitute Joselu was in the right place at the right time to win the game and the striker, who is being linked with a possible return to Real Madrid from Espanyol, has a chance of being in Sunday’s starting 11.
Thursday’s win lifted some of the pressure off Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente after defeat in Scotland in March, with the Spanish sports paper Diario As reporting that defeat to the Italians would have seen the former Under-21 coach sacked and replaced by former Rayo Vallecano boss, Andoni Iraola, a Xinhua report said.

Madrid, June 2 (Ians) Fc Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez continues to insist that he wants Leo Messi to play for the club next season.

Madrid (Spain), May 29 (Ians) Fc Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde will miss the forthcoming round of international matches and will need around two months to recover after suffering a partial tear in the ligament of his right ankle during Sunday’s 3-0 win at home to Mallorca.
The defender was caught by a bad challenge from Mallorca defender Amath Ndiaye, who was sent off in the 14th minute of the game, and had to be replaced by Sergi Roberto, reports Xinhua.
Fc Barcelona quickly published a medical report, confirming the extent of the injury, saying Balde will be sidelined for at least six or seven weeks.
That means Balde will miss Spain’s Nations League semifinal against Italy (and the final if they qualify) as well as the start of pre-season training for the 2023-24 season.

Madrid, May 27 (Ians) In an attempt to maintain fair competition, all matches from the penultimate round of games in La Liga will kick off simultaneously on Sunday evening, as teams vie for qualification into European tournaments and to avoid relegation.

Madrid, May 24 (Ians) Spain international left-back Jordi Alba will leave Fc Barcelona at the end of the current season, Spanish media reported on Wednesday. The 34-year-old leaves Barca after 11 seasons at the Camp Nou Stadium, during which time he has won multiple La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup titles, as well as lifting the 2015 UEFA Champions League, a Xinhua report said.
The defender has decided to leave despite having another year remaining on his contract after a season in which he has appeared less than previously, making just 13 starts from 23 appearances in La Liga, as youngster Alejandro Balde has stepped up to become first choice in his position.
So far, Alba has made 458 appearances for Barca, scoring 27 goals, and during their time together, his understanding with Lionel Messi formed a key part of the club’s attacking armory.

Madrid, May 17 (Ians) Fc Barcelona’s men’s and women’s teams celebrated their respective league title wins through the streets of the city, cheered on by hundreds of thousands of fans lining the streets.
The women continue to be unstoppable, claiming another title with a 100 percent record, while the men assured the title with a 4-2 win away to Espanyol on Sunday night, with four games left in the season, reports Xinhua.

Madrid, May 3 (Ians) Fc Barcelona are just one win away from securing this season’s La Liga title after their hard-fought 1-0 win at home against 10-man Osasuna and Real Madrid’s 2-0 defeat away to Real Sociedad on Tuesday night.
The results leave Barca 14 points clear of Real Madrid, who could drop to third place if Atletico Madrid beat Cadiz on Wednesday, and a win away against neighbors Espanyol on May 14 would make it impossible for either of the Madrid sides to catch them.
Jordi Alba’s sliced finish five minutes from time after a clever headed pass from Frenkie de Jong gave Barca the win, a Xinhua report said.

Madrid (Spain), April 15 (Ians) La Liga leader Fc Barcelona visit Getafe on Sunday in what could be a difficult afternoon for Xavi Hernandez’s side.

Madrid (Spain), Jan 31 (Ians) Fc Barcelona has a difficult away game against Betis on Wednesday, but Xavi Hernandez’s side travels to Seville with the chance of opening an eight-point gap at the top of La Liga and putting the pressure on Real Madrid.

Barca eventually triumphed in Saudi Arabia, but needed extra time and a penalty shoot-out to get past Betis, who currently sits sixth in the table and would move level with fourth-placed Atletico Madrid with three points on Wednesday.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 5 (Ians) The Round of 16 ends on Tuesday with Morocco playing Spain, while Portugal take on Switzerland. Here are four things to look out for in the World Cup in Qatar.
1. No change of plan from Spain
The Japanese were able to disrupt Spain’s rhythm to beat them 2-1 in the last match in Group E, but don’t expect any change of plan from the Spanish, who will stay true to their passing game.
Ferran Torres, Aymeric Laporte and Jordi Alba should give Spain more control than against the Japanese, but the Spanish don’t have a team to radically alter the way they play.
Maybe Ansu Fati’s brief cameo indicates he could have a bigger role to play, but if any side has an identity in this World Cup, it is the Spanish, and they are not going to change after just one setback.

Doha, Nov 30 (Ians) Spain coach Luis Enrique was giving nothing away about his line-up to face Japan on Thursday in the last round of matches in Group E.
A draw will be enough to see the Spanish through and even a defeat would possibly still see them into the last-16 on goal difference and the coach is expected to make some changes as he rests players such as Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, while preferring not to risk Gavi and Rodrigo Hernandez, who have struggled with slight physical problems in the last couple of days.
“We are not going to speculate with any player,” Enrique told the press ahead of his game, before adding that whoever played, Spain would go for the win.
“We want to win to be first in the group of death. We have no intention of speculating because we want to be the first,” he said.

The 29-year-old’s close range strike gave the Germans the first point of the competition having lost their first match to Japan 2-1.
Fuellkrug’s strike cancelled out the 62nd minute strike by Spanish substitute Alvaro Morata, who beat his marker and flicked the ball in at the near post past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer following a low cross from Jordi Alba to give Spain the lead.
The one-all draw has left the group still wide open with Spain needing just a point against Japan to qualify for the knockouts. A win will guarantee them top spot. Germany stay bottom for now, but they can jump to second and qualify for the next phase if they beat Costa Rica and Japan lose to Spain. However, it gets a little bit trickier for Germany if Spain and Japan draw. If Japan draw it would come down to goal difference or goals scored by Germany and Japan.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 22 (Ians) Spain kick off their FIFA World Cup campaign against Costa Rica on Wednesday looking to build on their performance in last summer’s European Championships, where they reached the semifinals before losing on penalties to eventual champions Italy.
Spain coach Luis Enrique has put his faith in a young squad of players who, despite their youth, already have plenty of experience in domestic and European football.
Unai Simon is a fixture in goal, while Aymeric Laporte and Eric Garcia will probably play in central defense, with Jordi Alba and Dani Carvajal as the full-backs.
There could be a Barcelona trio in midfield, with Gavi and Pedri accompanying either Sergio Busquets or Manchester City’s Rodri, while Alvaro Morata will lead the attack, partnered by two of Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati.

Madrid, Nov 12 (Ians) Spain coach Luis Enrique had few surprises when he named his 26-man squad for the World Cup on Friday from the headquarters of the Spanish Football Federation just outside of Madrid.
The coach has picked a squad with an emphasis on youth, including players such as Fc Barcelona trio Ansu Fati, Gavi and Pedri, and other youngsters such as Yeremy Pino, Hugo Guillamon and Nico Williams, while again ignoring calls to include Paris Saint Germain’s veteran Sergio Ramos.
There is the experience in defense, with Jordi Alba, Dani Carvajal and Cesar Azpilicueta all included, although there was no place for Athletic Club Bilbao’s Inigo Martinez, with Valencia’s Hugo Guillamon, who can also play in midfield if needed, given the nod.

Madrid, Oct 21 (Ians) Three goals in eight minutes saw Fc Barcelona claim a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Villarreal on Thursday night which helped them recover from Sunday’s defeat to Real Madrid.
Two goals from Robert Lewandowski in the 30th and 34th minute set Barca on their way, and Ansu Fati netted from close range after Ferran Torres had hit the post in the 38th minute to wrap the game up.
Lewandowski’s first goal saw him control a pass from Jordi Alba before striking home, while his second was a measured shot into the far corner of the Villarreal goal, reports Xinhua.
Barca coach Xavi Hernandez rang the changes with Marcos Alonso playing in central defence, while Torres, Gavi and Fati all came into the side, with Sergio Busquets and Eric Garcia among those dropping to the bench.

Madrid, Oct 3 (Ians) Spanish giants Fc Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have vital Champions League matches away from home on Tuesday night.
Barcelona visit Inter Milan and need to avoid defeat following their 2-1 loss away to Bayern Munich in their previous group game.
That defeat means another loss in Milan would suddenly leave Xavi Hernandez’s side with a lot of work to do to reach the last 16 of the competition, and Barca’s delicate financial situation means they cannot afford to miss out on the knockout stages.
Xavi still has a long list of injuries to contend with, as Ronald Araujo, Hector Bellerin and Memphis Depay all miss out again, but Frenkie de Jong may be able to play, while Sergi Roberto and Eric Garcia are also likely to come into the side. Gavi will also play after suffering a minor injury scare in Saturday’s 1-0 win in Mallorca,...

Madrid, Sep 27 (Ians) Spain face a vital match in Portugal on Tuesday night with a place in the Final Four of the UEFA Nations League at stake, but also with eyes on the more immediate future.
La Roja need to win in Portugal to ensure their spot in the final phase of the Nations League, but after their 2-1 defeat at home to Switzerland on Saturday, coach Luis Enrique also needs a good result to take to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Spain will kick off their World Cup campaign against Costa Rica on November 23, with only a friendly against Jordan on November 17 as preparation for the main event, and that leaves Luis Enrique very little time to sort out some major problems which were evident on Saturday, reports Xinhua.

Paris, Sep 25 (Ians) Portugal have boosted their chance to the semifinals of the Nations League after a convincing 4-0 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday, topping the group in which Spain suffered a shocking 2-1 loss to Switzerland on the same day.
Portugal, who won the first edition of the tournament in 2019, moved two points ahead of Spain and will host their neighbours in Braga on Tuesday in the showdown of the group stage.
Diogo Dalot opened his international scoring account by hitting a brace with Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Jota also on target, reports Xinhua. Madrid (Spain), Sep 17 (Ians) Spain coach Luis Enrique brought in two new faces when he named his squad for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Switzerland and Portugal on Friday.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 6 (Ians) Fc Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will start their Champions League campaigns on Wednesday night with must-win home matches.
Barcelona kick off their European campaign with the pressure of knowing the club’s delicate economic situation means it is vital for them to make it beyond the group stage this season after finishing third in their group last time around.
However, Xavi Hernandez’s side have been given a tough group where Bayern Munich and Inter Milan will be important rivals, meaning it is vital for Barca to start with all three points at home to Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen.

Madrid (Spain), Aug 27 (Ians) Both Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti and his Barcelona counterpart Xavi Hernandez on Saturday explained what they expect from the closing days of the transfer window.
With the window closing on August 31, most eyes are on possible departures at Real Madrid and the club’s options of buying a striker to provide backup to Karim Benzema.
However, Ancelotti said he would be putting his confidence in Mariano Diaz, who many had expected to leave before the end of the month, reports Xinhua.
“I am counting on Mariano; he has the best striker in the world ahead of him and it is much harder for him to get a game than others,” said Ancelotti, who was less clear about the future of Marco Asensio.

Madrid, Aug 20 (Ians) Fc Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez will make changes to his side for Saturday’s difficult trip to play Real Sociedad in the second round of La Liga on Sunday.
Sergio Busquets’ sending-off in the disappointing goalless draw that Barca kicked off the season with, leaves a space to be filled in midfield by either Frenkie de Jong or Miralem Pjanic, while Jordi Alba struggled last week and Balde could be given a chance.
The fact that Ronald Araujo looked uncomfortable at right-back last week, also opens the door for Sergi Roberto to start in the Barca defense, while Araujo moves into a more central role alongside Eric Garcia.
Xavi’s decisions are limited by the fact that the club has still not been able to write new signing Jules Kounde into their squad due to financial fair play rules, while Sergino Dest is on the exit ramp...

Madrid, May 24 (Ians) Spain captain Sergio Ramos has not been included in Luis Enrique's Euro 2020 squad named on Monday after an injury-troubled 2020-21 season.
Aymeric Laporte, who only this month switched his allegiance from France to Spain, is among the centre back options to have been preferred to the Real Madrid veteran.
Ramos was part of the national team that won three consecutive major tournaments between 2008 and 2012 and has remained a key man for his club and country ever since, breaking Italy great Gianluigi Buffon's all-time international appearances mark of 176 earlier this season, reports Dpa.
The 35-year-old has had the armband for Spain under Luis Enrique but played only 50 minutes of the March World Cup qualifiers against Greece and Kosovo before returning to Madrid injured.
Ramos was limited to 21 appearances in all competitions for Madrid this term, missing 31 matches.

Tiflis (Georgia) March 29 (Ians) Dani Olmo's 92nd-minute goal gave Spain a 2-1 away win over Georgia after it had looked as if their stuttering start to their World Cup qualifying campaign was going to be another poor performance.

Spain coach Luis Enrique made seven changes to the side that drew 1-1 at home to Greece on Thursday night with the only goalkeeper, Unai Simon, Eric Garcia, Ferran Torres and Alvaro Morata repeating in the starting 11. In contrast, Bryan Gil and Pedri made their first starts after coming on as second-half subs during the week.

Madrid, March 22 (Ians) Luis Suarez's 500th goal and a late penalty save from Jan Oblak were enough for Atletico Madrid to maintain their four-point lead at the top of La Liga.

Joselu hit his penalty hard, but Oblak guessed correctly to make a vital save to take his side one step closer to the title.

Madrid, March 8 (Ians) Karim Benzema's 88th minute goal kept Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title on Sunday as he canceled out Luis Suarez's opener for Atletico Madrid in a 1-1 draw in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
Suarez's 14th minute goal, following excellent work from Marco Llorente, looked as if it was going to allow Atletico to open up an eight-point gap over their neighbours in the table, and Atletico were good value for their lead for much of the game on Sunday.
However, after being aggressive for much of the game, they sat deep in the last 15 minutes and allowed Real Madrid to attack them, with Benzema's goal after an exchange of passes with Casemiro punishing that decision, Xinhua news reports.

Barcelona, March 4 (Ians) Fc Barcelona overcame a 2-0 first-leg deficit to book their place in the final of Spain's Copa del Rey knockout competition with a 3-0 win over Sevilla after an enthralling and controversial game at the Camp Nou.

Madrid, Feb 28 (Ians) Fc Barcelona kept their La Liga title hopes alive and probably ended Sevilla's with a 2-0 win in the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium. Ousmane Dembele and Lionel Messi gave Barca a win in the ground where they lost 2-0 in the Copa del Rey 17 days ago and just four days before the teams meet again in the Camp Nou.
Barca suffered a nervous wait before kick-off when goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen hurt his thumb in the warm-up and had to retire to the dressing room, and it was not until he came out with the rest of his team-mates that his presence was confirmed, Xinhua news reports.
Meanwhile, Barca boss Ronaldo Koeman sprang a surprise in his line-up with Sergino Dest and Jordi Alba playing as wing-backs in front of three central defenders on Saturday.

Madrid, Feb 4 (Ians) Fc Barcelona have moved into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, coming back from two goals down to beat Granada 5-3.
Barcelona on Wednesday night trailed 2-0 in the 88th minute before an own goal and a header from Jordi Alba saw them take the game to extra time, reports Xinhua news agency.
Barcelona started strongly with Lionel Messi seeing a shot blocked by Granada keeper Aaron, who also tipped Griezmann's follow-up effort over the bar.
Ronald Koeman had made his side's intentions clear by fielding virtually his strongest side with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in goal ahead of Neto, who had played in previous rounds.
Aaron did well to save a Messi free-kick as Barca dominated, but a bad error from Samuel Umtiti, who failed to clear under pressure, gifted the ball to Granada and Kenedy slotted home from close range.

Suarez put Atletico 3-1 ahead from the penalty spot after a clumsy tackle on Thomas Lemar, only for Negredo's scuffed shot to give Cadiz hope with 20 minutes left to play. Cadiz pressed hard for an equalizer in the closing minutes but Koke tapped home to seal the 4-2 win.
