Plot: The story of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. This inspirational true story follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression as they are thrust into the spotlight and take on elite rivals from around the world.
Review: As a director, George Clooney has delivered many themes, tones, and genres. With The Boys in the Boat, the actor-turned-filmmaker aims for the same inspirational sports tales that have long been Oscar fodder. From Seabiscuit to Unbroken to Rocky, underdog tales have always been rousing cinematic experiences that unify audiences in rooting for the plucky athletes that no one ever thought about. The Boys in the Boat hits all of the requisite notes and formulaic moments that have turned countless movies into box office hits, but this tale never quite moves the needle from a smattering of...

For a while it seemed like George Clooney was his generation’s heir apparent to Cary Grant, a bona fide movie star whose limited range is rendered irrelevant by his irrepressible charisma. And then he started directing films and, at least out of the gate things seemed momentarily more interesting. His 2002 directorial debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, came on breezy but grounded, certainly the most approachable take on a Charlie Kaufman screenplay ever mounted. And 2005’s Good Night, and Good Luck, his tribute to the mandarin days of television news, was at least palpably committed to lionizing Eisenhower-era liberal resistance. In other words, he looked to become the heir apparent to Robert Redford, auteur.
It didn’t last. The title of Clooney’s The Monuments Men, just about sums it up. His obsession with what he perceives as the achievements and moral clarity of those (read: Americans) who lived...

Hollywood is full of inspiring sports-themed movies, especially those focused on underdogs who rise to the occasion. But films about rowing teams are few and far between — until now. Director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat is a gorgeous adaptation of the Depression-era story of a group of poor but scrappy young men who find a slice of glory when they become the USA’s choice to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It is, to use a well worn cliché, a stand-up-and-cheer tale if ever there was one.
But the primary reason to cheer is the kind of unspoken underlying message within, that this is a sport where it is imperative that everyone in the boat rows as one, in unison and together physically and psychologically. This makes The Boys in the Boat not just enormously entertaining, but also important and relevant to our current world that is more divided,...

George Clooney says the Ocean’s gang could get back together after reading a “great script” for another film in the starry heist series. Speaking with Uproxx about his upcoming movie The Boys in the Boat, Clooney revealed a new Ocean’s film could find the crew from the trilogy reuniting for events set after Ocean’s 13. Ocean’s 14, anyone?
“We have a really good script for another ‘Ocean’s’ now, so we may end up doing another one. It’s actually a great script,” Clooney told Uproxx.
The outlet tried pressing Clooney for more information, though he was reluctant to share too much. When asked if the project intends to become Ocean’s 14, Clooney said, “Well… I don’t want to call it that… I mean, the idea is kind of like ‘Going in Style.'”

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore star Callum Turner goes on an epic quest for Olympic gold in the trailer for director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat, which Amazon MGM Studios dropped on Wednesday ahead of a Dec. 25 theatrical release.
Turner plays Joe Rantz, a Depression-era outsider who discovers joining the rowing team in college will assure him of job and housing. “We rowed out of need. The need to stay in school, the need to eat, to sleep,” an older Rantz says in a voice-over that recounts the underdog rowing team beating powerhouses like Harvard and Yale on their way to triumphing over host Nazi Germany at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

Directed by Sean McEwen, American Outlaws is based on the real-life events of a bank robbery and other associated felonies committed by three siblings, Dylan, Lee-Grace, and Ryan Dougherty. Starring Emory Cohen, Sam Strike, and India Eisley in the lead roles, the film is based on the 2012 case of the Dougherty siblings, who took the police on an 8-day chase after committing a string of felonies. The movie dramatizes certain incidents, but, in the end, it’s a deeper look into the hollow façade of the ‘American’ way of life, where the poor are always treated as second-class citizens, leading to children growing up with a lot of anger and issues in their hearts. Here’s everything that happens in the 2023 action thriller American Outlaws.

Exclusive: One notable title up for sale we’re hearing about at the European Film Market is Timothy Scott Bogart’s pop Romeo & Juliet musical, Verona starring Clara Rugaard, Jamie Ward, Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett, Jason Isaacs and Derek Jacobi.
Verona will be the first film in a original pop musical trilogy based around the real-life 1301 story that inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. A wide theatrical releaser this Christmas is being planned.
Bogart tells us, “We’ve set out to tell the greatest love story of all time, set to the musical pulse of our time. But Shakespeare only told part of that remarkable tale whose events changed the course of history!”
Voltage is handling international sales on Verona.
Bogart recently directed the 1970s-1980s set feature Spinning Gold about his record label exec father Neil Bogart’s rise and fall with Casablanca Records. That pic is coming out on March 31 in theaters.

Hot on the heels of leaving Netflix for Amazon, horror creator Mike Flanagan already has his next big project lined up. The creator of spooky TV favorites like “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass,” and “The Midnight Club” has acquired the rights to adapt Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” book series.
Flanagan revealed the news in a Deadline interview with his producing partner Trevor Macy about their jump from Netflix to Amazon, where they recently inked an overall deal.
“Predating our deal with Amazon, we acquired the rights to ‘The Dark Tower,’ which if you know anything about me, you know it has been my Holy Grail of a project for most of my life,” Flanagan told Deadline. “We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t get behind it at some point — you don’t know.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has passed on The Dark Tower pilot. The adaptation of Stephen King’s book came from executive producer/showrunner Glen Mazzara and Mrc. The production company is shopping two original scripts that were the basis for the pilot pickup, sources said.
The Dark Tower has always been considered very difficult to adapt to the screen, which explains the title’s lengthy road to being made as a feature by Sony and a pilot by Amazon. Largely because of the challenges translating the material, Amazon opted to go with a pilot vs. straight-to-series on a big-scale, big-budget production like The Dark Tower. In the end, I hear Amazon executives felt like the pilot was not on the level of other large-scope elevated genre series the streamer has in production/pre-production like Wheel Of Time and The Lord Of the Rings.

The Walking Dead alum Michael Rooker has been tapped to co-star opposite Sam Strike and Jasper Pääkkönen in Amazon’s pilot The Dark Tower, an adaptation of Stephen King’s book, which has started production.
The Dark Tower TV series, from executive producer/showrunner Glen Mazzara and Mrc, is independent from the 2017 film and is meant to be a more faithful retelling of the book than the movie was. I hear it takes place many years before the events depicted in the feature and will focus on the origin story of Roland Deschain’s (Strike) – how he first became a gunslinger and got his guns, his first conflict with the man in black (Pääkkönen), his first love and his first mission as a gunslinger.
Pääkkönen is believed to be playing Marten, the character Roland is out to kill. I hear Rooker also plays a main villain and might be Eldred Jonas from the books,...

When three teenage thieves infiltrate a mansion dinner party they have plans for pulling off an easy and lucrative heist. Little do they know that the dinner party is actually hosted for a group of recovering serial killers that have gone ‘sober’ and fought to change the error of their ways. Once the mansion owners realise they are about to be robbed all hell breaks loose.
I love home invasion movies. Even moreso when those whose homes are being invaded are not quite who or, in some cases, what they appear. Taking the typical home invasion flick and turning it on its head by having the hunters become the hunted usually makes for some intriguing, exciting storytelling. Now, the project is gaining speed at Amazon, with Sam Strike cast in the lead role.
Deadline reports that in The Dark Tower series, Sam Strike will play Roland Deschain, aka The Gunslinger. Additionally, Jasper Pääkkönen is expected to play the villainous Marten in the series, whom readers will remember as playing a key, devious role in Roland's past.
According to Deadline, the in-development series (which is "nearing a formal pilot order" at Amazon) will be more in line with the source material of King's books and will also be separate from the 2017 film. Let’s give this Dark Tower adaptation thing another go, shall we? After the big screen take on Stephen King‘s fantasy epic disappointed just about everyone, Amazon is ready to try their hand at journeying to Mid-World. The pilot for the planned “Dark Tower” series adaptation currently in the works at Amazon has cast two lead roles.
Sources say that Jasper Pääkkönen and Sam Strike have both been cast in the pilot, which is based on the Stephen King book series of the same name. Strike will play Roland Deschain, also known as The Gunslinger, while Pääkkönen is believed to be playing The Man in Black, also known as Marten Broadcloak and Randall Flagg. The series is said to tell the story of how Roland became a gunslinger and his first encounter with the villainous Man in Black.
Amazon declined to comment.
Strike most recently starred in the Syfy series “Nightflyers,” based on the George R.R. Martin novella. His other recent credits include “Mindhunter,” “Timeless,” and “EastEnders.” He will also appear in HBO’s upcoming miniseries “Chernobyl.”

Amazon’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower book series has found its Gunslinger. Sam Strike (Nightflyers) has been cast as the lead, Roland Deschain, in the project, which I hear is nearing a formal pilot order at the streaming platform.
Jasper Pääkkönen will co-star in the drama, from executive producer/showrunner Glen Mazzara and Mrc. The project had had a blinking green light for a couple of months, with casting quietly underway. It had been in development at Amazon for almost a year.
The Dark Tower TV series is independent from the film and is meant to be a more faithful retelling of the book than the movie was. Sam Strike and Jasper Paakkonen will star in the project based on Stephen King's novel, which has been in development since 2017 and at Amazon for nearly a year. With the two leads set, a formal pilot order is likely to follow.
Amazon declined comment.
