The Magicians Season 5 Episode 13
There was no way that The Magicians was going to be able to wrap up its five year run without displeasing fans simply by ending, but “Fillory and Further” provided a surprising amount of closure and a happier conclusion than we’re used to with this show. Compared to the death and dismemberment at the end of season one, the turning off of magic in season two, Eliot being possessed in season three, or the death of Quentin in season four, the separation of our group between Earth and the new world is downright hopeful as finales go. Even the loose threads that remain brilliantly allow for fans to draw their own conclusions about where the adventure would go from here.
That’s not to say there weren’t sacrifices. The loss of Zelda would have been a lot to...

The Magicians Season 5 Episode 7
Penny brings up a good point in this week’s episode of The Magicians. He and his friends just saved our world; are they really on the hook for saving Fillory as well? We’ve certainly grown to love the world of Plover’s books, but it’s inarguably difficult to get audience buy-in to stop the Taker scourge, an enemy that pales in comparison to previous season villains and anything involving moving the Moon. The idea that the Dark King, a woefully underdeveloped character, is responsible for creating the very enemy he is lauded for vanquishing was predicted weeks ago by fans, making it even less impactful. So while “Acting Dean” was a fun episode,...

The Magicians Season 5 Episode 4
The Magicians doesn’t do anything halfway, but unfortunately that principle also applies to its missteps, of which “Magicians Anonymous” is one. Where the series is usually able to weave together disparate storylines to create a cohesive thematic tapestry, this episode felt oddly disjointed. It was almost as if the narrative itself was akin to the brown bunny in the Etheric Realm, jumping from story to story with dizzying disorientation while admittedly charming us along the way. The installment was redeemed somewhat by significant insights into the apocalypse problem, Penny’s mysterious signal, and the troubles in Fillory, but fans are used to cleaner storytelling in this show.

The Magicians Season 5 Episode 2
Following Stephanie Quinn’s example, no one here is going to tell The Magicians fans how to grieve, but if “The Wrath of the Time Bees” didn’t help bring some closure for those who miss Quentin Coldwater, nothing will. This episode provides a helpful turning point for Alice even as Eliot is still finding his way, but with Julia and Kady progressing through their respective investigations and Margo finding some measure of victory in Fillory, the story is picking up speed nicely right after the premiere. In that regard, the show manages to respect Quentin’s legacy without wallowing in grief or indulging in denial.

After last year’s finale, The Magicians had a lot of weight to shoulder going into the Season 5 premiere. Last season ended with the death of Quentin, who sacrificed himself to save Eliot and bring back magic. It was a divisive decision, especially when it came to the Quentin/Eliot relationship, and now Season 5 has to prove that it was worth it.
Wednesday night’s season premiere, “Do Something Crazy,” takes place about a month later. Quentin’s death was technically successful — but maybe too much so, because now the world is plagued with powerful “magic surges” that have been killing magicians.

The Magicians Season 5 Episode 1
The Brakebills graduates have been separated at the start of other seasons of The Magicians, but it feels more pronounced and somehow more appropriate than usual that each character has their own shit to work out this time around. As Alice’s mom tells her, “No one gets to tell you how to grieve… you’re on this journey by yourself,” and with Quentin gone from their lives, they’re all going to have to “do something crazy to get through it,” whether it has to do with mourning their friend’s loss or not. As such, the season 5 premiere does what this show has consistently done well for years: introduce several different threads at once and somehow make it flow.

Magic is no longer rationed in the world of The Magicians. And that’s not necessarily a good thing.
Magic is flowing freely once again at Brakebills, in Fillory, and beyond. To override the Library’s strict system of rationing, it took our heroes a full season of quests, popped-out fairy eyeballs, sidekicks rising to the occasion, a hedgewitch alliance, personal growth, fearless sacrifice, and Josh’s muffins. That only accounts for about an eighth of what happened during The Magicians season 4, the show’s fantastically sprawling, thematically ambitious, and most controversial season yet. For those compelled to recap the whole adventure, I’d advise swiping Dean Fogg’s emergency bottle of booze first. You’ll need it.
With The Magicians season 5 premiering on Jan 15th on Syfy, the full restoration of magic has some unintended consequences as the characters simultaneously begin a painful healing process after...

We need to talk about Julia Wicker.
There is no denying that The Magicians Season 4 finale was a shocker. Quentin Coldwater's death is a loss, and not just of the point-of-view-character of the series, but as someone who struggled with mental illness.
There's no denying that his friends will still be grieving at the start of The Magicians Season 5. Face it, mo matter how gorgeous that rendition of 'Take On Me' was, it isn't going to sooth all wounds.
The vacumn created by Quentin's death gives the show a chance to redirect the story with a new focal point, and that focal point should be Julia Wicker.
As Quentin's childhood friend, Julia is ideally placed to pick up the torch left by Quentin. She shared his love of magic and even his love of Fillor.

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 13
No one ever accused The Magicians of being afraid to take risks. Any pat endings, and there were a couple, were completely waved aside by the sheer magnitude of what Quentin did to save the world not only from the twin unkillable gods but also from a potentially omnipotent autocrat. We finally got a payoff to Penny’s mysterious meeting at the underworld elevator, and a surprising addendum to the musical episode actually outdid the original all on its own. Plus the ending was one of the most complete conclusions this series has ever seen even though it sprinkled in several new storylines for season 5.

I would like to submit The Magicians Season 4 Episode 10 as evidence that pop anthems from the 80s cure a multitude of ills.
"All That Hard, Glossy Armor," is a musical episode that plays nicely after The Magicians Season 3 Episode 9, "All That Josh."
The musical episode was an amazing exercise in how music can enhance a story, but while it showed off a lot of the core cast's performances, it didn't give Hale Appleman a chance to show off his voice much.
His parts of the "Under Pressure" duet left the audience wanting more, and that's what "All that Hard Glossy Armor" delivers.
Sure, this is a figment Eliot but the second Margo sees him on the sand dune singing "Don't Get Me Wrong" it infuses some excitement that we didn't realize we were missing this season.
The use of 80s anthems is also a strong choice for this plot.

Two episodes into the new season and I find myself saying "well, that didn't last long."
The Magicians Season 4 Episode 2 doesn't waste any time getting to the heart of the matter and getting rid of the glamors that make it impossible for our main characters to interact like the ones we all know and love.
After The Magicians Season 4 Episode 1, it was evident that we were going to have to get rid of the glamors soon.
Season 4 is set up to be a two-part problem. First, there's a shapeshifting demon the loose, inhabiting the body of Eliot. Second, the Brakebills students don't know who they are they are thanks to Henry Fogg's spell casting.
The problem with this setup is that there are only so many ways to not talk about what they need to talk about to solve it.

Syfy’s adaptation of Lev Grossman’s “The Magicians” fantasy novels finally goes off-book for a wholly original story in its fourth season, and the result is just as spellbinding as ever. That’s not entirely surprising since co-showrunners Sera Gamble and John McNamara had already demonstrated their ability to play fast and loose with the source material, yet stay true to its magical spirit. Despite exhausting all of Grossman’s major plots, the new adventure continues the show’s inspired storytelling, which is both a vindication and relief for longtime fans.

“We couldn’t be happier or more excited to conjure another year of magic and all it entails — love, hate, loyalty, betrayal, sex, foul language, drugs, battling gods, monsters and the most dangerous enemies of all: other human beings,” McNamara and Gamble said in a statement. “We have the best writers,...

The Magicians season 4 places magic under the authoritarian rule of the Order, and showrunner John McNamara explains the why and how.
When The Magicians season 4 begins on January 23, 2019, it will return to a world that is thankful to have magic back and terrified to have it taken away again. According to showrunner John McNamara, this atmosphere of fear is the perfect breeding ground for fascist rule, and the Library, and Mageina Tovah’s Zelda in particular, is more than happy to step into the role of the benevolent but controlling protector of magic.
McNamara spoke to us from the set in Vancouver about how this new world order snuck up on The Magicians fans and on the characters themselves. “Germany didn't happen overnight in the 1920s and '30s. France didn't fall under fascist rule overnight,” he reminded us. “It's always a series of very small choices.

Changes are afoot on Syfy's The Magicians.
The Magicians Season 3 ended with Dean Fogg's decision gave his students no memories and magic-free identities, allowing them to take on normal lives.
In the first teaser for The Magicians Season 4, fresh from New York Comic-Con, Margo is taking on the role of a fashion editor named Janet.
It seems very Once Upon a Time ... almost like the characters have been cursed.
Margo gets a visit from the God Ember and it makes her question everything.
Will she be the one that brings her friends back together, or will something more sinister do the trick?
"Even with their new identities, our core group is far from safe since, inside Castle Blackspire, an ancient, powerful and unkillable Monster escaped confinement and jumped bodies to a new host, Eliot," reads the official synopsis.
"The season ended with The Monster finding a mind-wiped Quentin,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Magicians” Season 3 finale, “Will You Play With Me?”]
While the season-long quest for all of the Seven Keys is technically over, the ordeal for Brakebill’s erstwhile students is not. In the Season 3 finale of “The Magicians,” Quentin (Jason Ralph) and his friends were just about to succeed in restoring magic to the world when the faction representing the Librarian (Mageina Tovah) activated the fairy-powered Syphon device and diverted the magic to the Neitherworld Library.
Now, instead of having free-flowing magic, it’s so closely rationed that Brakebills instructors can barely perform simple demonstrations. Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy), who had betrayed Quentin & Co. to help the Librarians, is similarly frustrated with his limited access to magic. The timing couldn’t be worse because an all-powerful demon only known as the Monster or Thing has been unleashed upon the world with no one the wiser. The Monster is “something that simply wants…...

The Magicians season 4 has returned and so has magic (sort of), and we've got the latest trailer, links to reviews, and more news.
The Magicians season 4 has returned! In the season three finale of The Magicians, magic was finally restored by unlocking the fountain at the other end of the Wellspring, but the Library, Irene McAllistair and Dean Fogg swooped in to reroute magic to themselves. In exchange, Dean Fogg negotiated the lives of his students, erasing their memories and giving each – except Alice who is now imprisoned by the Library – a new, magic-free identity.
Even with their new identities, however the core group is far from safe since inside Castle Blackspire, an ancient, powerful and unkillable Monster escaped confinement and jumped bodies to a new host, Eliot. The season ended with The Monster finding a mind-wiped Quentin, and The Magicians season 4 will pick up with The Monster seeking out the others,...

Revelation is at the center of The Magicians Season 3 Episode 6, as a new part of the Fairy Queen’s plans, Julia’s magic and Quentin’s guilt are all unveiled.
There were a lot of moving parts that fell into this larger theme of the reveal this week, and it left me feeling quite satisfied just one episode out of the season’s halfway point. I will say that it felt like there was a lot more than usual happening.
As we saw at the end of The Magicians Season 3 Episode 5, Alice “figured out” how to transfer magic between her and Julia. And as I had hoped, we learn that the easy solution is incredibly dangerous thanks to Penny.
As a result of Alice and Julia almost catching themselves on fire, Julia is finally forced to reveal that she has magic. I thought the Dean’s response was appropriate (albeit...

The world of magic grows bigger even as there’s little magic in it during The Magicians Season 3 Episode 4.
“Be The Penny” is probably one of the most interesting episodes to date. In a matter of 42 minutes, the show crammed in an admirable amount of plot development without overwhelming the audience. At the same time, it also took steps to ensure viewers understood the mechanics of what was happening.
That is often a tricky balance for storytellers, especially for series featuring casts as large as that on The Magicians. And yet the writers managed to feature every character, address a shift in their plot or character development, expand the universe, and explain how the heck aspects of the universe work near effortlessly.
The episode begins at almost the exact spot where The Magicians Season 3 Episode 3 ended: with Penny on his deathbed. Thus begins Penny’s journey into an astral projection...
