Exclusive: Kat Taylor & Tom Steyer’s TomKat MeDiA has unveiled its slate of social justice-themed projects for 2022. The multi-platform media company has secured rights to Duff Wilson’s eco-thriller Fateful Harvest and Aaron Bobrow-Strain’s award-winning work of narrative non-fiction, The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez, with plans to develop both as feature films.
Based on a Seattle Times investigative series reported by Wilson that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Fateful Harvest is the riveting account of an alarming environmental scandal. Published in 2001, the book tells the story of Patty Martin — the mayor of a small Washington town called Quincy — who discovers American industries are dumping toxic waste into farmers’ fields and home gardens by labeling it “fertilizer.” She becomes outraged at the contaminated soil, failed crops, dead horses, and fatal, rare diseases in her town, as well as the direct threat to her own children’s health.

Conceived well before Slate’s Forrest Wickman would argue against subtlety, The 33 could be a poster child for his essay: here’s a film that doesn’t beat around the bush, even when the leader of the trapped miners, Mario “Super Mario” Sepulveda (Antonio Banderas), tells his men, “that’s the heart of the mountain boys, she finally broke.” The 33 is an English-language reeling of the 2010 mining incident that trapped 33 miners 2,300 feet underground, below a rock the size the Empire State Building. However, sanitized for Hollywood, a harrowing, real-life story does not always make a good film.

The inevitable cinematic adaptation of the remarkable 2010 Chilean miners rescue has made its way to the big screen, and if you were expecting an uplifting tale that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit in the way only Hollywood can, that’s exactly what you’re going to get. “The 33,” stuffed to the gills with Latin American actors (and some non-Latin American actors, excuse the accents) tells this tale with all the textbook markers of a disaster film. What makes this one different is Patricia Riggen is at the helm, a rare occurrence of a woman behind the camera for a picture of this genre and budget. Her assured direction of the rote script makes “The 33” an affecting endeavor, if not entirely innovative. “The 33” is the perfect day-after-Thanksgiving movie: a true life tale, rendered in easy, broad strokes with enough humor to lighten the proceedings and plenty...

From Alcon Entertainment and Phoenix Pictures comes the unforgettable true story of The 33.
In 2010, the eyes of the world turned to Chile, where 33 miners had been buried alive by the catastrophic explosion and collapse of a 100-year-old gold and copper mine. Over the next 69 days, an international team worked night and day in a desperate attempt to rescue the trapped men as their families and friends, as well as millions of people globally, waited and watched anxiously for any sign of hope. But 200 stories beneath the surface, in the suffocating heat and with tensions rising, provisions—and time—were quickly running out.
A story of resilience, personal transformation and triumph of the human spirit, the film takes us to the Earth’s darkest depths, revealing the psyches of the men trapped in the mine, and depicting the courage of both the miners and their families who refused to give up.
