Two recent Netflix true-crime titles have explored a form of domestic abuse that many people don’t know about: coercive control, which, according to Laura Richards, a criminal behavioral analyst formerly of New Scotland Yard who also trained with the FBI and created and hosts the Crime Analyst and Real Crime Profile podcasts, means “a set of behaviors that’s designed to isolate, to entrap and to exploit — but most of all, to dominate another person.”

TV creators are constantly searching for inspiration for their next projects, and in the past, books, comics and movies provided the source material for many series. In the past few years, podcasts have become a fertile source of ideas for documentary series and dramatic shows as well as comedies and talkshows. The episodic nature of podcasts lends itself perfectly to TV, where six to 10 episodes lets the viewer really dive into complicated stories like “Dirty John” or “The Shrink Next Door.”
For faithful podcast listeners, it’s fun to see which actors were cast to bring the real people to life and which elements of the story are emphasized. If you started out by watching the TV series, you’ll get a deeper understanding of the story by going back to the podcast to listen to all the supporting details. Anaheim investigator Julissa Trapp’s co-workers call her “the cape” — a small woman, she once flapped around a suspect’s shoulders like the garment as he tried to shake her off. She’s tough, resourceful and fiercely dedicated to her job — and she’s also the subject of a new five-part podcast from Christopher Goffard, the writer and host of Dirty John. It’s simply titled Detective Trapp.
Unlike true-crime podcasts that focus in on the killer, Detective Trapp homes in on a cop — and draws an intensely human portrait of its titular subject.

Here's everything we know about the next installment in the ongoing Dirty John anthology series.
Another limited series that just couldn't stay limited, Dirty John is coming back for a second season in 2020. We'll be moving on from the story of charismatic Con Man John Meehan, which was first spun into a successful podcast by Christopher Goffard. The first season was a surprise hit for Bravo and co-producer Netflix, and the network and streaming service will likely be hoping that season 2 claims just as many viewers, if not more.
Season 2, Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story, will lay out an "epic true tale of love gone wrong — a story that spans the 1960s to the ’80s, through the breakdown of a marriage that Oprah deemed one of 'America’s messiest divorces' even before it ended in double homicide," according to the official logline.
Here's what we know so far.

True crime has been embraced by the television academy in recent years, especially in the Best Limited Series category. Both installments of FX’s “American Crime Story,” “The People vs. O.J. Simpson” (2016) and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” (2018), went home with Emmy statuettes. And while the show isn’t in the running this time around — its third season has not begun production — the limited series race is not one bereft of true crime contenders. One hopeful is Bravo’s “Dirty John,” which premiered on Nov. 25 and debuted internationally on Netflix on Feb. 14.

NBCUniversal is moving “Dirty John” from Bravo over to USA Network for its second season.
The series, which starred Connie Britton and Eric Bana, was initially given a two-season order. The anthology series will feature a completely new storyline in the new season.
The move puts “Dirty John” alongside USA Network’s scripted dramas “Mr. Robot,” “The Sinner” and the upcoming “Briarpatch” with Rosario Dawson. The network also aired reruns of “Law & Order: Svu.” Bravo, meanwhile, is more known for its unscripted fare.

Breakout true-crime anthology series Dirty John will be moving from Bravo to sister NBCUniversal network USA for its second season, expected to premiere in 2020.
Dirty John received a two-season straight-to-series order by Bravo in January 2018. With its first season, starring Connie Britton and Eric Bana, Dirty John became the highest-rated scripted series ever on the network, with ratings growing throughout its run.
A move to a bigger network with established scripted footprint is expected to help the series expand its reach similarly to the ratings bump RuPaul’s Drug Race got on the unscripted side when it moved from Logo to VH1.
At USA, Dirty John joins another crime anthology series, The Sinner, as well as off-network staple Law & Order: Svu. USA’s scripted slate also includes Mr. Robot, Queen of the South, Briarpatch, Treadstone, Dare Me, Brave New World, The Purge, Suits and spinoff Pearson.

TV's latest binge-able show is based on a fascinating true story, so why does it feel vaguely underwhelming?
This article contains spoilers for Dirty John, the TV series and the podcast. It originally ran on Den of Geek UK.
A series of articles in the La Times, a podcast that was downloaded over 10 million times in its first six weeks of release and now an eight-part TV drama that debuted on Bravo and has just landed on Netflix in international markets, Dirty John is the latest insane true life story to come to the small screen.
It tells the story of John Meehan, a con artist and general scumbag who seduced and insinuated himself into the life of successful business owner Debra Newell. A whirlwind romance built on lies quickly turns nasty as Debra and her family begin to uncover the truth about John’s past, ending in violence.

Welcome to “Remote Controlled,” a podcast from Variety featuring the best and brightest in television, both in front of and behind the camera.
In this week’s episode, “Dirty John” showrunner Alexandra Cunningham sits down with Variety‘s senior features editor of TV, Danielle Turchiano, to talk about working with Connie Britton to develop a scripted version of Debra Newell and the importance of offering not only Newell’s perspective in the storytelling but that of the others in her life, including John Meehan (Eric Bana).
One of the things Cunningham notes she specifically wanted to do when setting out to write a scripted series inspired by Christopher Goffard’s podcast of the same name was play with perspective.
“That was a thing that I could do, that Chris couldn’t do, was hear from John, as opposed to about John,” she explains.

“Dirty John,” Bravo’s new limited series adapted from the podcast of the same name, does the unthinkable: It makes you not care about Connie Britton. Seriously. Other middling programs, privileged with the actor’s sharp sense of humor and warm ferocity, have tried to make audiences forget their deep-seeded attachment to the former Mrs. Coach from “Friday Night Lights”. But none have succeeded — none, until “Dirty John.”
Starring Britton as a wealthy designer looking for love in all the wrong places, the eight-part anthology series is inspired by the true and tragic events well-chronicled by Los Angeles Times reporter Christopher Goffard, first in print and later in his popular podcast, but the first three hours of this scripted iteration are cold and one-sided. As much mystery looms around the eponymous John, played by a steely-eyed Eric Bana, as there is distance bordering on apathy given to Britton’s Debra Newell.

There's Connie Britton and Eric Bana, intrigue, lies, sex and danger, but at the heart of Dirty John there's also real people. Bravo's new limited series is based on the podcast and Los Angeles Times articles of the same name by Christopher Goffard, and it tells the harrowing true story of Debra Newell's saga with the titular character, John Meehan, played by Bana. What started out as a date turned into a nightmare for Debra, who is played by Britton in the series, and her family, including daughters Jacquelyn and Terra Newell. "He was a doctor, so I thought, 'Ok, he's got a career.' His charm—I'm learning a lot about charming people though—his looks, his...

Connie Britton is no stranger to being a part of shows that make a mark on pop culture (Friday Night Lights, American Horror Story). But with her new series, Dirty John, she’s stepping into a story that’s already grabbed the public interest.

After her real-life romance gone wrong with John Meehan went viral thanks to journalist Christopher Goffard’s investigative podcast, Debra Newell felt like her story wasn’t accurately represented.
“It wasn’t really talking enough about what a bad guy John was or what he did,” she tells Variety. “And I’d never seen myself as desperate or insecure. I saw myself as an accomplished woman who really had it all except love.”
Neither Newell, nor her family was involved in the podcast’s production, but they did meet with various members of the team behind Bravo and Universal Cable Productions’ limited series adaptation of the same name.
“I was hoping this would reach a broader market and be able to help people through [experiences] with this type of man and realize what was out there,” Newell says of the scripted show.

Just about any crime story can find an audience if it’s told with enough drama and intrigue. Though the true crime genre has been exploding in recent years thanks to podcasts (“Serial”) and documentary series, the widespread fascination with what makes people turn on each other — and how to withstand it — has fueled shows like “Unsolved Mysteries” and “Law & Order: Svu” for decades. As much as anything else, true crime and the fiction inspired by it has something of a built-in audience, ready and waiting to see what the hell new twist reality can serve up.
In this respect, “Dirty John” is a no-brainer of a programming choice. Christopher Goffard’s story about a drug addict grifter marrying wealthy women until they were no longer of use to him was released in October of last year as both a written Los Angeles Times report and a podcast. The latter...

Bravo said Tuesday that it is canceling the planned red carpet ahead of tonight’s world premiere of its anthology series Dirty John in Hollywood out of respect for victims of the wildfires still burning in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
The screening at the NeueHouse Hollywood will go on as planned, but the 5:30 Pm red carpet that was to feature the series’ cast and crew was scrapped. It comes ahead of the series debut November 25 at 10 Pm on Bravo.
It comes as several events around Hollywood have been pared down as fires continue to burn northwest of Los Angeles. AFI Fest has canceled red carpets ahead of four of its gala screenings, the latest today with the Steve McQueen-directed Widows.

Baby, can’t you see? Connie Britton is falling! And that’s a really bad thing, because Eric Bana seems like a really bad dude in this newly-released trailer for Bravo’s upcoming limited series “Dirty John.”
In the almost two-minute teaser for the true-crime-podcast-turned-thriller-tv-show, Britton’s Debra Newell is smitten with Bana’s John Meehan. And, of course, we know this is all going to go to hell cause the trailer is set to a haunting cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic.”
The Newport Beach, California, interior designer’s daughters (Julia Garner and Juno Temple) are nervous their mom is so deeply in love (maybe lust?) with this mysterious doctor who is prone to some random outbursts and creepy tendencies.

When Bravo ordered an eight-episode limited scripted series based on the “Dirty John” podcast, the production team had a wealth of material on which to base the show. Beyond Christopher Goffard’s audio telling of the story were numerous La Times articles. But additionally, the real Debra Newell is still alive and has been a resource for her portrayer, Connie Britton.
