A documentary about Harry Belafonte’s “Tonight Show” stint and another executive produced by NFL player Malcolm Jenkins will be among the movies that will debut on Peacock as part of NBCUniversal’s original film slate in September.
The original films “Anthony,” “The Sit-In: Harry Belafonte Hosts The Tonight Show” and “Black Boys” will premiere early next month. Further, the documentary “A Most Beautiful Thing” and Emilio Esteveez’s “The Public” will stream exclusively on the service in September.
“The Sit-In,” which premieres Sept. 10, looks at the events surrounding the week in which Belafonte guest hosted “The Tonight Show” in place of Johnny Carson for a full week in February 1968, the first time a Black man ever got the opportunity. Belafonte’s guests that week included Aretha Franklin, Sidney Poitier, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, and the documentary includes behind-the-scenes footage of how the politics of the day shaped the show.

I am black ambition

If you want to fly take the leap
You gotta risk it all (Risk it all)
Or they'll be lots of things you'll never see

As previously explored in our 1991 pre-Smackdown ruminations, the 64th Academy Awards were marked by several first in the annals of Oscar history. The Silence of the Lambs became the first horror movie to conquer Best Picture, and it was also only the third flick to win the Oscars' Big Five after It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Among the other Best Picture contenders, Disney's Beauty and the Beast also made a splash, becoming the first animated feature to be nominated for that most important category. Still, more important even than that landmark for animation, we have the case of John Singleton who, in one fell swoop, became the first Black man to be in contention for the Best Director Oscar, as well as the youngest nominee in the category's history…...

Police brutality has gone from a niche concern – one most white people considered impolite to bring up at dinner parties – to a compulsory national conversation. It’s long overdue, which has left many playing catch-up, especially white folks and popular media. As David Dennis Jr. pointed out in his excellent Twitter thread superhero shows have an especially tall order, given that they rely on portraying lawlessness and a fictionalized criminality that the hero can then clamp down on. But that image is out of touch with reality and can send damaging messages.
We’ve long discussed this problematic aspect of the genre in our reviews and features, whether it’s Barry Allen’s personal private prison kept in the basement of Star Labs or Oliver Queen’s incredibly short-lived interest in reforming the prison industrial complex…before he went right back to adding more people to it. Comedian and “Saturday Night Live” alum Jay Pharoah revealed he was recently stopped by multiple LAPD officers with their guns drawn while he was walking in Los Angeles. One of the officers knelt down on his neck.
Pharoah shared security camera footage of the incident –which took place a week before the death of Ahmaud Arbery — in a longer video about racism in America posted to his Instagram. He also discussed what happened during an appearance on a June 12 episode of CBS’s “The Talk.”
“I was actually on Ventura, I was exercising, as I’m walking across the street…I see an officer to the left of me. I’m not thinking anything of it because I’m a law abiding citizen,” Pharoah describes in the Instagram video. “I see him coming with guns blazing, I see him say, ‘Get on the ground, put your hands up like you’re an airplane.

Half a decade ago, after the death of Eric Garner, the cast and crew of Ava DuVernay’s film, “Selma,” wore “I Can’t Breathe” shirts to show their support for the murdered Black man. The film would go on to earn a ton of acclaim from critics and enter into awards season as a favorite to receive a number of Oscar nominations. Unfortunately, the film only received two nominations, with lead actor David Oyelowo getting snubbed for his portrayal of Dr.

Black Lightning Season 3 Episode 14
Black Lightning is at its best when its heroes are in sync with one another, and operating from a place of complete trust. The Pierces have been fractured this season, but in this week's episode, they navigate their issues in an honest dialogue and come back together to protect Freeland, as a unit.
For the majority of the season, both the A.S.A. and the Markovians have been pulling their punches, waiting for the other to drop their guard, or looking for an opportunity to gain the upper hand. This gave off the impression that nothing was happening and called into question the legitimacy of the Markovian threat. But after Jefferson's semi-successful mission in Markovia to rescue Lynn and retrieve Tobias, the Markovians...

Doctor Who has increased its commitment to diversity, but the show needs to examine this on more than a surface level.
This article contains major spoilers for the Doctor Who Season 12 premiere.
By many measures, the current era of Doctor Who is more diverse than ever before. Not only does the central team feature two characters of color in the form of Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Yaz (Mandip Gill), but Head Writer Chris Chibnall has brought on the first writers of color in the more than 50-year history of Doctor Who to help shape this story behind-the-scenes. While these are steps in the right direction, Doctor Who is not immune to the current pattern of “progression” in mainstream media: From casting more diversely without thinking about how those diverse identities affect the character and story to killing off characters with marginalized identity in the service of white male character development,...

[Editor’s Note: This interview contains spoilers for “Watchmen” Episode 6, “This Extraordinary Being.”]
If there was trepidation about stepping into the spotlight of a high-profile television series and serving as the catalyst for the show’s whole universe, you’d never know it from talking to Jovan Adepo.
Episode 6 of HBO’s “Watchmen” series, titled “This Extraordinary Being,” featured the actor as the third iteration of Will Reeves, mysterious grandfather of protagonist Angela Abar (Regina King), previously seen as a young boy fleeing the Tulsa Race Massacre and, more prominently, as an old man in a wheelchair played by Louis Gossett Jr. After Angela overdoses on Will’s Nostalgia pills, both she and the audience are thrust into his memories, experiencing his life as a police officer in New York, an attempted lynching at the hands of fellow officers, and, ultimately, his decision to become Hooded Justice, the first superhero.

Sterling K. Brown is known for playing Randall Pearson, the loving father in This Is Us, but in Trey Edward Shults’ family drama Waves, he shows us a very different side. As Ronald, he’s the domineering parent of Tyler (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), a young man painfully striving to impress his pushy dad by becoming a great wrestler, and Emily (Taylor Russell), who is on her own difficult journey toward womanhood. The Emmy-winning Brown embraced this challenging role as a thoughtful framing of the father-son relationship, highlighting the importance of vulnerability within the masculine mindset.
Deadline: When you first read the script for Waves, what was your initial reaction, and what was it that spoke to you about this very unique story?
Sterling K. Brown: Reading the script was most unique reading of a script that I’ve ever had because the music cues were embedded in the Pdf,...
