- Gary was the caretaker for the wolf-dog Jed. He owned him, but Jed's trainer for Hollywood filming productions was Clint Rowe. The films that featured the wolf dog were shot in Alaska, British Columbia and Alberta.
- He is Henry Winkler's second cousin.
- While filming Eight Below (2006), Gary was at a gas station in Vancouver, British Columbia where he slipped on an oil slick and fell hard on his back and head. He dislocated his brain stem and nearly died. Paramedics airlifted him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He broke his lower back in addition to dislocating his brain stem, but eventually had a successful recovery from his severe accident.
- His Alaskan Malamute "Teddy Bear" appeared on the VHS/DVD cover title of White Fang (1991) and White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf (1994), though Jed performed the role in both films.
- Gary is a fan of high powered jet skis and rides the waves of the Victoria Clipper and Foss tugs in Puget Sound, Washington. His yard is strewn with jet ski parts which he repairs, tinkers and upgrades to fuel his passion.
- He was Cody's original owner. This Alaskan Malamute was subsequently given to Dennis Grisco.
- Many of his wolfdogs were permanently transferred to Gary Gero's cinematic and television animal sanctuary "Birds & Animals Unlimited". Their most notable film appearance was in Disney's direct-to-video film The Jungle Book: Mowgli's Story (1998).
