Five years after its finale, Game of Thrones is still considered the most groundbreaking fantasy series of our time, and only another brainchild of HBO, a series based on the Harry Potter universe, can compete with GoT for this title, but it is still in the early stages of development.
However, if you are tired of waiting for a new show, but want to feel something in the spirit of Hogwarts, then we have a suitable option for you. But a more explicit one.

Adam Driver doesn’t totally stand by his “Star Wars” character Kylo Ren’s dark side.
Appearing on an episode of “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” on Max, the actor revealed that he is reminded by “Star Wars” fans “every day” that he killed beloved character Han Solo. The fatal battle sequence took place in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with Kylo Ren committing patricide.
“Somebody reminds me about that every day,” Driver joked. “Not every day but yeah, it used to be more but now it’s probably once a month somewhere.”
Driver reflected on filming the “emotional” scene with co-star Ford, saying, “Obviously, John Williams’ [score] wasn’t playing in the background and it was very emotional actually, shooting it with Harrison. Harrison was so generous and contemplative and to me that was a great moment on set, even though it was his death.”

Fandom is multifaceted, and each of these 10 novels has a unique take on how pop culture shapes our lives. There’s a ’90s classic about digital D&d alongside a contemporary account of game designers from the Oregon Trail generation. Historical fiction set during comics’ Golden and Bronze Ages gives way to a cautionary tale about superheroes’ collateral damage. And while cons can be the setting for geeky romance meet-cutes, they can also be the site of Misery-inspired thrillers.

Another year, another “Groundhog Day” rip-off. Nearly three decades after Bill Murray got stuck in a time loop until he became a better man, the concept has spawned so many iterations that it basically exists as its own genre, mixed and mashed with other tropes to reanimate a familiar routine. Often, the deja vu of watching these movies mimics the predicaments of their characters, even when they’re halfway decent. The latest to take the rom-com approach, “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things,” offers an agreeable kind of breezy, soul-searching variation, but can’t break free of the overwhelming meta impression that we’ve seen this all before.
The movie plays like a hybrid of several recent variations: Like 2017’s drama “Before I Fall,” it’s a slick YA adaptation (sci-fi writer Lev Grossman wrote the screenplay off his short), it has some tonal similarities to the horror-comedy “Happy Death Day,...

It’s hard to find a new spin on a story that’s been told before. This week, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things seeks to traffic in material that we saw done to classic effect in Groundhog Day, not to mention brilliantly spun last year in Palm Springs. This movie could have easily been derivative and a total misfire. Luckily, the flick sidesteps nearly all of the pitfalls, finding a way to make this premise still feel unique. It may not reinvent the wheel, but if you’re looking for a solid new film to check out, this is one not to sleep on. The film is a romantic drama, with a fantasy/science fiction element thrown in for good measure. Early on, we meet teenager Mark (Kyle Allen), who is living the same day over and over again. Having mastered the day while in this endless time loop,...

Before we’re even out of the opening credits of “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things,” director Ian Samuels and screenwriter Lev Grossman waste no time clueing us into its premise revolving around a time loop that will teach its teen protagonists to accept life’s little gifts and major detours. This John Green-lite fantasy for the young-adult crowd holds many sequences that sparkle and shine, but a few that stumble and sag as well. Yet the feature’s genteel, sweet spirit and radiant lead performances rescue it from forgettable mediocrity and genre familiarity.
Seventeen-year-old budding artist Mark (Kyle Allen) begins all his mundane mornings the same way — not by choice, but because he’s trapped in a time loop. Every day he wakes up at the same exact time, sees his workaholic mom drive away, greets his dad Daniel (Josh Hamilton) and irascible younger sister Emma (Cleo Fraser) at the breakfast table,...

There’s a grammar-school-friendly version of the Sondheim musical called “Into the Woods, Jr.,” which erases all of Act Two (except “Children Will Listen”) so you can have the storybook charm without the sex or death. Amazon’s “A Map of Tiny Perfect Things” is essentially “Groundhog Day Jr.,” turning the idea of being stuck on the same day into a YA romance.
“Groundhog Day” was by no means the first story to use the idea of people in a temporal anomaly as a metaphor for being in a rut, but it launched its own sub-genre that includes Sundance hit “Palm Springs,” the Netflix series “Russian Doll,” the horror franchise “Happy Death Day,” and even the made-for-tv holiday film “12 Dates of Christmas.” All that’s left for “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things” to mine is a narrative that places teens in the center of the universe and allows...

US sci-fi Soulmates starring Succession‘s Sarah Snook (pictured) arrived on AMC last year and makes its UK debut on the 8th, while Rosamund Pike-starring con-artist thriller I Care a Lot, also starring Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, has been picking up some great reviews.

Disney’s Star Wars Sequel Trilogy started strong but ended badly, with the promising elements of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi squashed under a leaden, confusing plot that simply didn’t make much sense. That’s not to say there weren’t things worthy of praise across the movies though, with the most obvious example being Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. Here was a Dark Side Force user like nothing we’d seen before, powered by rage, nursing an inferiority complex and grappling with his conflicted feelings for Rey.
The Rise of Skywalker showed him (eventually) redeeming himself and turning to the Light Side, taking down the Knights of Ren and assisting Rey in fighting the implausibly resurrected Emperor Palpatine. Despite this arc though, we never got a full explanation of why and how Ben Solo turned to the Dark Side, other than him seeing Luke in a moment of weakness.

Kylo Ren turned to the dark side after waking up one night during his training to find mentor Luke Skywalker thinking of killing him. But what if his anger started developing long before that? “The Magicians” author Lev Grossman is finally sharing outtakes from his big 2019 Vanity Fair preview of “The Rise of Skywalker,” which was the first major feature written on the final entry of the Skywalker saga. Grossman spoke to the entire cast for the article and told Inverse this week that he left out something big: Adam Driver’s backstory for Kylo Ren.
“I think probably the thing that was missing for me, I wanted to see more about Kylo’s childhood,” Grossman said of the latest “Star Wars” trilogy. ”I thought they would go back to show us more about why he turned to the dark side. The failure of Disney’s adaptation of Artemis Fowl came from the movie’s decision to not trust the audience to handle the original premise.
“Making an adaptation of a popular book series is hard. Changes are necessary, and you can’t always do everything that was in the books. I get that. Yet, when a company spends money on the rights for a book series, you would assume that they believe in the premise of the book—that they want to adapt at least 75-80% of the book, not ‘Let’s just make an entirely new movie and just slap a familiar title on it.’ Sadly, that is exactly what Disney did in their adaptation of Artemis Fowl.”

When The Magicians came to an end on Wednesday night, it did so in a very meta fashion. The show has always set itself apart from its sci-fi/fantasy kin by embracing a postmodern, quirky, self-referential tone, but the finale takes that to a whole new level by, symbolically, breaking the fourth wall and allowing the characters to act in ways that mirror the actions of devoted fans. It's a fitting ending to a show that's meant a lot to so many viewers - me included - even when we've disagreed with some of the choices it's made.
By the end of the final episode, the majority of the central cast have allowed the destruction of their magical land of Fillory, but not before rescuing all the living beings on the planet, then literally creating a new world from scratch. But there's a catch: as they work to "rebuild" a...

As one of the longer-running shows on Syfy, The Magicians has delivered plenty of entertainment with its humor, its universal themes, and its spellbinding goddamn magic. Although it has not been renewed for a sixth season, cancellation feels like a harsh term for the end of this show, especially since part of its story overlaps with the final book of Lev Grossman’s trilogy from which the series is adapted. With that in mind, we spoke to all three of the showrunners from the past seasons to get a sense of the conclusion and look back on the accomplishments of this great series.

A magical era of television has come to a close as Syfy has decided that The Magicians season 5, which is currently in progress, will mark the end of the series. Although the show commanded the network’s largest audience for years, it recently fell in the ratings in a season that was missing the story’s main character, Quentin Coldwater.
That controversial decision may not be solely to blame for the cancelation, and five years is a respectable run for any show. However, fans will most certainly wonder if Jason Ralph’s departure played a key role in the series’ demise. The Magicians season 5 has enjoyed stellar reviews here at Den of Geek, and there are high hopes that the season will be able to wrap up the story in a satisfying way.
“The Magicians has been a part of our Syfy family for five fantastic seasons,” Syfy shared in a statement to THR.

The Magicians is officially coming to an end. On Tuesday, Syfy announced that the show's current fifth season will be its last. "As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers and directors for their beautiful creation. The end is just around the corner for The Magicians. The current fifth season of the fantasy drama series will be its last; the April 1 Season 3 finale will serve as series finale.
Created by John McNamara and Sera Gamble based on Lev Grossman’s novels, The Magicians for years was Syfy’s top series. Creators/executive producers McNamara and Gamble have served as showrunners of The Magicians since Day one; at the start of Season 5, fellow exec producer Henry Alonso Myers was named co-showrunner alongside them.
While they did not go into Season 5 knowing that it would definitely will be the show’s final chapter, I hear they wrote the Season 5 finale so it could also work as a series finale.

And for its final trick, “The Magicians” is bidding farewell.
Syfy has announced that the current fifth season of the fantasy show will be its last. Season 5, which is scheduled to last 13 episodes, premiered in Jan. 2020, meaning that the series finale will air on April 1.
Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. The series first premiered on Syfy in January 2016, and has been one of its most consistent shows over the last four years.
News of the show’s end means that the NBCUniversal-owned cabler’s scripted roster has been whittled down to only a couple of returning series. However, Syfy is gearing up to premiere several new offerings in the near future, and recently ordered a pair of shows including one inspired...

The Magicians Season 5 Episode 8
Is everyone ready to roll back that smug conviction we had last week about the Dark King’s duplicity? We should know by now that The Magicians likes to play with our expectations, and the Fillory storyline not only gave us a great Freaky Friday sequence between Margo and Eliot; it also had us questioning whether assassinating Sebastian, impermanent though it was, was the right move. Plus plans are being laid for Alice and Quentin’s world-building seed, a glorious reference from the final entry in Lev Grossman’s book trilogy, The Magician’s Land, which builds enticingly on the nod to a character from that book in the form of Hamish Bax, who is quickly growing on us.

The Magicians Season 5 Episode 7
Penny brings up a good point in this week’s episode of The Magicians. He and his friends just saved our world; are they really on the hook for saving Fillory as well? We’ve certainly grown to love the world of Plover’s books, but it’s inarguably difficult to get audience buy-in to stop the Taker scourge, an enemy that pales in comparison to previous season villains and anything involving moving the Moon. The idea that the Dark King, a woefully underdeveloped character, is responsible for creating the very enemy he is lauded for vanquishing was predicted weeks ago by fans, making it even less impactful. So while “Acting Dean” was a fun episode,...

Holy Chatwin.
Even five seasons in, this show still finds ways to surprise me, and The Magicians Season 5 Episode 4 was no exception.
I'm going to offer you a little bit of warning here if you haven't seen the episode. Read forward at your own peril! a
Merritt was revealed to be Plum Merritt Chatwin.
Fans of Lev Grossman's trilogy will recognize the name. In the last book of the series, "The Magician's Land," a character named Plum Purchas is introduced.
Without getting too much into the details, Plum is revealed to be Rupert Chatwin's great-granddaughter.
Merritt: This happened … this is because of me. I didn’t see it coming, and I never thought it would get this bad.
Penny: Merritt what could you have done?
Merritt: I should have told you the truth. My name – my real name – is Plum, Plum Merritt Chatwin.
Penny: Wait.
Julia: You’re a Chatwin?...

The friends Quentin leaves behind might just have to do something crazy to get through their grief.
The following story contains spoilers for The Magicians Season 4 and Season 5 Episode 1.
The impact of a fictional character death doesn’t just play out on screen. Fans who make an investment in a TV show can find themselves grieving the loss of a favorite character in a way they never expected—through emotions that mirror how we mourn in real life. A recent Popular Science article notes that professional counselors consider this legitimate grief, and marketing studies found that people “not only form relationships with their favorite characters, but with the real-life humans they watched the series alongside or went to all the movies with.” This takes on new meaning in an age where people can find a home for whatever their fandom is in an instant online. It gives viewers a place to remember,...

Magic is no longer rationed in the world of The Magicians. And that’s not necessarily a good thing.
Magic is flowing freely once again at Brakebills, in Fillory, and beyond. To override the Library’s strict system of rationing, it took our heroes a full season of quests, popped-out fairy eyeballs, sidekicks rising to the occasion, a hedgewitch alliance, personal growth, fearless sacrifice, and Josh’s muffins. That only accounts for about an eighth of what happened during The Magicians season 4, the show’s fantastically sprawling, thematically ambitious, and most controversial season yet. For those compelled to recap the whole adventure, I’d advise swiping Dean Fogg’s emergency bottle of booze first. You’ll need it.
With The Magicians season 5 premiering on Jan 15th on Syfy, the full restoration of magic has some unintended consequences as the characters simultaneously begin a painful healing process after...

Ninth House, published October 8 by Flatiron Books, is Bardugo’s first novel for adults. It is set at an alternate Yale, Bardugo’s real-life alma mater, where the secret societies guard dangerous, magical secrets and ghosts haunt the campus.
A book of the month selection at Apple, Barnes & Noble and Amazon, Ninth House has an order for 350,000 copies for its first print run. It triggered a bidding war among premium and streaming outlets, with HBO and Hulu reportedly among those pursuing the title.
Bardugo will executive produce the project alongside her frequent collaborator Pouya Shahbazian (the Divergent series), head of film & TV at New Leaf.
