Jimmy Kimmel did a fantastic job with the 2024 Oscars opening monologue, touching briefly on politics but mostly focusing the jokes around this year’s nominees. Kimmel called out Greta Gerwig’s Oscar snub, this year’s Oppenheimer nomination being a new “high” in Robert Downey Jr’s career, and compared Emma Stone playing an adult woman with the brain of a child to the woman who gave the rebuttal to the State of the Union address. Kimmel’s monologue ended with a standing ovation as he brought Teamsters & IATSE members onto the stage, thanking them for standing with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA during last year’s strikes.

The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. Overall, it was the icing on the cake of a refreshingly entertaining edition of the Oscars – one of the best in years.
Right off the bat it was pretty amusing, Jimmy Kimmel made some pretty fun digs in his opening monologue, including some references to Robert Downey Jr’s checkered history (which he was happy to play along to) and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s genetic perfection (he ain’t wrong). Plus, there was a close-up of Anatomy of a Fall’s breakout dog star, Messi (who showed up despite earlier giving the award show the high hat...

Forget what that Christmas song says! Here at TV Fanatic, we think award season is the most wonderful time of the year.
And in terms of both television ratings and general global interest, award shows don't get any bigger than the Academy Awards.
The stakes are higher than usual this year, as some major blockbuster films with some very devoted fan bases appear to be neck-and-neck in some of the major categories.
The race between Barbie and Oppenheimer (two quite different films that hit theaters on the same day) might be getting the most attention, but there's always a chance that a dark horse could sneak up from behind and snatch Best Picture away from both front runners.
Meanwhile, several of the acting categories are anyone's game and certain to create controversy no matter the outcome.
So without further ado, here are this year's predictions and hot takes from two...

“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. That’s why some big-budgeted fare was deemed eligible or, in the parlance of the show, independent.

The official poster for American Fiction featuring Jeffrey Wright as Monk has just been released. The film, from writer/director Cord Jefferson, is based upon the novel Erasure by Percival Everett and stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Adam Brody, Keith David, with Issa Rae and Sterling K. Brown.
American Fiction is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

Jeffrey Wright is a frustrated author bent on making the publishing industry see its own racist hypocrisy in the first trailer for American Fiction.
In Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut, Jeffrey Wright plays Monk, a frustrated author who decides to take on the culture’s obsession with reducing people to stereotypes, particularly entertainment that profits and peddles in tired — and offensive — tropes about Black Americans.
“What really struck me was that too few books were about my people. Where’s our stories? Where’s our representation?” Issa Rae’s Sintara Golden, a rising Black author, is seen telling a crowd in the trailer, before she begins to read from her new book. “Yo, Sharonda! Girl, you be pregnant again?!’ ‘If I is, Ray Ray’s goin’ be a real father this time around.'”
The excerpt garners a standing ovation from the room and a deep pain for Monk, who...

Jeffery Wright is rewriting what it means to be a serious academic author in dark comedy “American Fiction,” winner of the TIFF People’s Choice Award this year.
Wright stars as Monk, a novelist whose high-brow books haven’t hit the bestseller list in years. Frustrated, a drunken Monk parodies himself for a mock memoir under a pseudonym, incorporating Black stereotypes…and becomes a hit author in anonymity.
Cord Jefferson wrote and directed the critically acclaimed film, which premiered at TIFF. Jefferson’s directorial debut is an adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure”; Everett served as an executive producer on the film, along with Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman.

On Friday night, the Toronto International Film Festival had one of its buzziest premieres of its lineup this year with “American Fiction,” an adaptation of Percival Everett’s 2001 novel “Erasure” that serves as Emmy-winning writer Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut.
Given the filmmaker’s pedigree, having worked on acclaimed series like “Watchmen,” “Succession,” “The Good Place,” and “Master of None,” plus the inclusion of Tony and Emmy winner Jeffrey Wright as the lead, the Orion Pictures release had been pegged as an under-the-radar awards contender.
However, the TIFF audience would soon find out that in the story of a Black American author fed up with the lack of recognition his cerebral work has gotten, writing a soulless, stereotypical book that becomes an accidental bestseller, Jefferson already had built-in commentary on what Black American stories, including his, are considered awardsworthy.
“It’s this revolving door of misery and tragedy,” said the...

Orion Pictures — the MGM label headed by Alana Mayo — has acquired the feature directorial debut of Watchmen writer Cord Jefferson. Jeffery Wright stars in the project from Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street and MRC.
Based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett, the movie centers on Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a writer and English professor whose writing career has stalled because his work isn’t deemed “Black enough.” The description for the project continues that Monk “writes a satirical novel under a pseudonym, aiming to lay bare the hypocrisies of the publishing world. The book’s immediate success forces Monk to get deeper enmeshed in his assumed identity and challenges his closely-held worldviews.”
Jefferson adapted the novel for the screen.

MGM’s Orion Pictures has acquired worldwide distribution rights to Emmy-winning writer Cord Jefferson’s untitled feature directorial debut, starring Emmy winner Jeffrey Wright.
Produced by MRC and Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street Productions, the film is based on the novel “Erasure” by Percival Everett. Jefferson also adapted the screenplay.
“As longtime fans of Cord, we are thrilled to be a part of his feature film debut and for the opportunity to share his vision with global audiences,” said Alana Mayo, president of Orion Pictures, in a statement announcing the acquisition. “His adaptation of Everett’s biting novel and Jeffrey’s brilliant take on the character, along with this incredibly talented cast, create a wonderful alchemy to tell this story.”
Wright stars in the film as Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, an English professor and author who writes a satirical novel under a pseudonym, aiming to lay bare the hypocrisies of the publishing world.

Exclusive: Jeffrey Wright is set to star in the untitled film from MRC and T-Street based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett. Cord Jefferson wrote the adaptation and is making his feature directorial debut.
Wright plays Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, an English professor and author who writes a satirical novel under a pseudonym, aiming to lay bare the hypocrisies of the publishing world. The book’s immediate success forces Monk to get deeper enmeshed in his assumed identity and challenges his closely-held worldviews.
“Cord has masterfully captured the sharpness and irreverence of Percival’s writing and brought the characters to life with such humanity and accessibility. There is no one more well-suited than Jeffrey Wright to embody Monk’s wit and exasperation. We are honored to partner with them and T-Street to make this fresh and original film,” said MRC Film Co-Presidents Brye Adler and Jonathan Golfman.
