The International Documentary Association is beginning 2024 with a new executive director, and now a new executive committee of the IDA board.
The nonprofit, which provides grants in support of documentary filmmakers, advocates for the field and mounts fall and spring screening series and the bi-annual Getting Real conference, announced the election of Ina Fichman and Michael Turner as board co-presidents. They succeed Grace Lee and Chris Perez, who remain on the board.
Fichman earned an Academy Award nomination last year for producing Fire of Love. She has also earned Emmy, BAFTA, and Cinema Eye Honors nominations for her work, and won awards from the Jerusalem Film Festival, the Gémeaux Awards in Montreal, the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association, among many others.
Turner oversees business and legal affairs for Netflix’s slate of documentary films. He previously served as SVP and head of business and legal affairs at Discovery’s production studio.

At documentary festival IDFA this week, National Geographic’s exec VP of marketing and communications Chris Albert – whose slate includes IDFA entry “The Mission,” about the death of American evangelical missionary John Chau on the remote Indian island of North Sentinel – was asked during an onstage interview with the festival’s artistic director Orwa Nyrabia: “How would you market a film with a budget of $20,000?”
The executive, who has worked at National Geographic for over 20 years, was quick to respond: “Whether you’ve got $20,000 or $2 million, marketing can’t make a bad movie good. You can throw as much money as you want into a bad movie and it’s not going to make it better.”
Albert said he could spend his entire marketing budget for a low-budget film by placing it on the viewing portal for Oscar voters, but that is not the way he would proceed. “I...

Exclusive: Dr. Amani Ballour, the courageous subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary The Cave, has been granted a visa to enter the United States in time for the Academy Awards, Deadline has learned.
Amani, whose efforts to run a subterranean hospital in the besieged Syrian city of Eastern Ghouta are documented in the film by Feras Fayyad, is expected to arrive in New York on Sunday, capping an extensive effort by distributor National Geographic to get her here.
“I have seen the visa with my own eyes. It was texted to me this morning,” Chris Albert, Evp Marketing Strategy and Communications at National Geographic, told Deadline exclusively. “For Dr. Amani — who is just, in our eyes, such a hero — to be able to come [here] … in person means a lot to us.”
Nat Geo previously went to bat for Fayyad, who had been denied a visa to come back to the U.

Los Angeles has four seasons, just like any other place: Spring, Emmys Fyc, Summer, and Oscars Fyc. As the city finally begins to transition to summer, Television Academy voters can breathe a sigh of relief as nomination voting kicks off on June 10 and the churn of For Your Consideration events begins to slow.
There was something different about 2019’s crop of Emmys events, a departure from the full-scale assault launched by Netflix with more than month spent in residency at Raleigh Studios with a massive Fysee space. This year, a network took the Fyc show on the road.
To look at the schedule of Emmy-related events last month, a person could be forgiven for thinking there was a website error. After all, there were 10 events planned for NatGeo’s limited series “The Hot Zone,” for showings located all around the country.
But the mass bookings for the adaptation of Richard...

Nat Geo Wild has no plans to punish Cesar Millan. A spokesperson for the network told TheWrap that while Millan is under investigation for animal cruelty after a potbellied pig was bitten at his training center, he is cooperating fully with authorities and the investigation is not expected to take long. “Why would we punish him? He didn’t do anything wrong,” Svp, Communications & Talent Relations for National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild Chris Albert told TheWrap. He also emphasized that this is a routine investigation and that the dog, its owner, and the pig are all healthy and doing fine.
