Brainy political lightning rod Oliver Stone isn’t making feature films anymore. Sure, he’d love to add a 21st to his 20 films to date; he just can’t find backers. His alternate route, like many other directors today, from fellow Cannes entrant Ron Howard (“Jim Henson: Idea Man”) to Martin Scorsese, is documentaries.
Stone has churned out a career total of ten, including recent 2021 Cannes entry “JFK Revisited” (Showtime) and 2022 eco-doc “Nuclear” (Abramorama). His latest, “Lula,” marks a move to the left from his much-criticized recent portraits of dictators such as Cuba’s Fidel Castro (HBO’s “Comandante”) and Russia’s Vladimir Putin (Showtime’s four-part “The Putin Interviews”).
Since his start as a filmmaker in the 1970s, the Yale-grad-turned-Vietnam-vet, now 77, has leaned into political fiction, from “Salvador,” “Wall Street,” and “W.,” to Best Director Oscar-winners “Platoon” and “Born on the Fourth of July.” His last Oscar nomination came in 1996, for “Nixon,...

Warners Bros has screened their axed Coyote vs. Acme to around 12 buyers we hear with a rigid buy price of $70M+; which is how much the animated live-action hybrid movie cost.
Netflix and Paramount put forth bids, which we told you about, but they were lower than the $70M asking price (between $30M-$50M), therefore in Warner’s eyes, rivals didn’t want the feature for what it cost.
What Deadline has received clarity on is that Warner Bros took a $70M writedown on Q3 earnings, not the upcoming Q4. Nonetheless, the movie, which the Burbank, CA lot decided back in early November not to release — remains in purgatory. That said, we hear the door isn’t officially closed on Coyote vs. Acme‘s prospects yet — it’s just that the Coyote could wind up in the cave with Batgirl.
“No one is doing anything at Warners to push this film for a sale,...

In the wake of Jade Castro’s arrest last week, the family of the Filipino filmmaker has released a statement demanding a “transparent and fair investigation” and launched a fundraiser to cover mounting legal costs.
The statement, which Castro’s family signed alongside those of Noel Mariano, Ernesto Orcine and Dominic Ramos, who were also detained without warrant, was posted on the “Free Jade Castro” page on Facebook. Many Filipino filmmakers and industry professionals have shared it on social media.
Castro, Mariano, Orcine and Ramos are accused of arson after a modern jeepney (a minibus-like utility vehicle) was set on fire; they were arrested in Mulanay, Quezon in the Philippines. However, TV station Abs-cbn and two local officials have placed the group more than an hour away from the scene of the crime at the time it took place, according to local news site Rappler.

The Directors Guild of the Philippines (Dgpi) has called for the “immediate release” of filmmaker Jade Castro after he was arrested by police last week.
Castro and three of his friends were arrested on suspicion of arson in Mulanay, Quezon in the Philippines on Tuesday (February 1).
He is known for directing indie arthouse films such as comedy horror Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington (aka Remington and the Curse of the Zombadings) and TV series such as Beki Boxer and Lss (Last Song Syndrome). He is a producer on Some Nights I Feel Like Walking, which is in post and set for the festival circuit this year.
Castro tweeted about the situation and declared his innocence, stated he was on vacation and that the crime had occurred in Catanauan, which is about 25km away from Mulanay. He later shared that the arrest was warrantless and it appears he is still being held.

Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro announced on Monday that he has nominated 27 films for potential addition to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry, all of which feature Latino filmmakers, culture and history.
“Given the film industry’s continued exclusion of Latinos, we must make a special effort to ensure that Latino Americans’ contributions to American filmmaking are appropriately celebrated and included in the National Film Registry,” Rep. Castro wrote in his nomination letter. “The continued exclusion of Latinos in the film industry affects Latinos seeking opportunities in the industry and shapes how Latinos are perceived, stereotyped, and misunderstood in American life.”
Among the films nominated by Castro are “Frida” the 2002 biopic of legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo that earned Salma Hayek an Oscar nomination. Other Oscar nominated performances, such as Catalina Sandino Moreno and Demián Bichir in the immigration dramas “Maria Full of Grace” and “A Better Life,” were also included.

‘Bless up for the Ted Heads!’: Emmy nominee Alex Szabo celebrates ‘Ted Lasso’ fans at Emmy FYC event
There was nothing but love for “Ted Lasso” during the joint Apple TV+/Gold Derby FYC event held August 16 at the American Society of Cinematographers Clubhouse in Hollywood. In celebration of the comedy’s 21 Emmy nominations, top artisans from the program joined TV academy voters for a festive night with dinner, drinks and trivia. Editor Alex Szabo, who is nominated with A.J. Catoline for his work on the episode “Mom City,” sat down with Gold Derby associate editor Latasha Ford to spread that love back to fans. Watch the video interview above.
“Bless up for the Ted Heads!” he exclaims at the top of the interview. “Without them we wouldn’t be here. I remember season one, I was like, ‘I just hope people watch it.’ And here we are a few years later and everyone’s like, ‘We need more! We need more!’ I appreciate it. I don’t take it for granted.

Believe! The historic American Society of Cinematographers headquarters in Hollywood that sits a stone’s throw from the legendary Magic Castle was the setting Wednesday night for a standing room only event celebrating the Apple TV+ comedy sensation “Ted Lasso” and its 21 Emmy nominations (easily the most of any comedy series) that again included Best Comedy Series, with attendees indulging in dinner, drink, trivia, a screening of the series finale and all things “Lasso” at an FYC gathering co-sponsored by Apple TV Plus and Gold Derby.
While nine “Lasso” performers (including five guest actors/actresses) are among this year’s Emmy-nominated crop from the series, none were permitted to attend due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Those nine actors to receive bids this year include Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso), Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), Juno Temple (Keeley Jones), Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton), Sam Richardson (Edwin Akufo), Becky Ann Baker...

What was supposed to be a day of mourning turned out to be a day of rejoicing for a family in Ecuador.
Bella Yolanda Montoya Castro, 76, knocked on the inside of her coffin door in the middle of her wake, shocking friends and family in the process.
Castro, a retired nurse, was declared dead at the hospital after not responding to resuscitation attempts. She had suffered from a possible stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest earlier.
Castro’s son, Gilberto Barbera, said his mother was unconscious when she was brought to the hospital. Soon after, he was handed her death certificate.
After about five hours of the wake, Barbera said, they heard sounds coming from the coffin.
Castro was wrapped in a sheet and began hitting the coffin. When guests looked more closely at her body, they could see she was breathing.
Despite the amazing news, Castro is still in critical condition,...

He was one of the biggest screen icons and one of the most colorful real-life characters in Hollywood history. Still considered the king of swashbucklers more than 60 years after his death, Errol Flynn’s success was a combination of happenstance, luck and his ability to charm.
Errol Leslie Flynn was born on June 20, 1909, in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia to an affluent family. A natural born rascal, he was thrown out of several private schools, and eventually wandered, working odd jobs. He fell into acting quite by chance when he won the role of Fletcher Christian in the Australian film “In the Wake of the Bounty” (1933). There are conflicting stories of how he landed this part, but it is the film that piqued his interest in acting, and eventually caught the attention of Warner Bros. executives.

For those who haven’t visited Havana and traversed seafront promenade Avenida de Maceo from old Havana to the central business district of Vedado and then on to upscale Miramar, taking in the myriad stories of grandeur, genteel decay, resignation, resilience, and optimism, while hearing strains of rumba, jazz, and nueva trova, and seeing the murals of ‘Commandante’ (Fidel Castro) or ‘Che’, there is an alternative.
Books.
There is a wide array of books, both fiction and non-fiction, by authors new and old, known and unknown, that bring Havana, and Cuba, to life from the times of soldier-turned-dictator Fulgencio Batista to Castro and further.
The focus, though, is more on the days of Mafia dominance, Castro and his revolution, and the Cuban Missile Crisis – the first time the world was on the brink of a nuclear war.
And they span genres from gritty stories of life to crime noir and police procedurals,...

"Patria y Vida." Homeland and life. Those are the words Cuban protesters chanted as they took to the streets on July 11, 2021, in what became one of the biggest antigovernment demonstrations against the Cuban regime in decades. The slogan came from a hip-hop song released the same year by Yotuel Romero, the Afro-Cuban leader of the rap group Orishas, singer Descemer Bueno, the reggaeton group Gente de Zona, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Maykel Osorbo, and DJ El Funky.
The song has become the sound of liberty in Cuba. It also won two Latin Grammy Awards for song of the year and best urban song, becoming a song of both victory and empowerment for the Cuban people. Romero, Gente de Zone, Descemer Bueno, and El Funky even performed the song at the 22nd annual Latin Grammys on Nov. 18, 2021.

A second season of the Brazilian series “Invisible City” just dropped, with only five episodes to cover some massive new characters and half-baked storylines. While season 1 follows Eric’s story of figuring out the mystery of his wife’s death, this one takes place in a different city with different mythological creatures and a new ‘gold’ problem in town. A lot goes down in the five short episodes, leaving us slightly confused and losing interest in the unique ideas that the show set out to present to us. Let’s try and break down “Invisible City” Season 2.
Spoilers Ahead
Recap: What Happens In ‘Invisible City’ Season 2?
At the end of season 1, Eric is seen stabbing himself to save everybody from “Dry Body.” Luna finds herself alone as the entities take Eric away into the forest to try and heal him. Now, it’s been two years since Eric saved the forest,...

Invisible City (Cidade Invisível) is a series directed by Júlia Pacheco Jordão and Luis Carone. It stars Marco Pigossi, Alessandra Negrini and Jéssica Córes.
The Invisible City is a very original fantasy and thriller series that knows how to swim wonderfully between the waters of the spiritual and criminal worlds, between the supernatural and the detective genre, and it also has an original aesthetic proposal.
About the Series
A murder thriller that gets lost in local legends, in the world of spirits and magic, and then presents us with a message of environmental conservation.
Very entertaining, well handled and accomplished visual effects (CGI), achieving an attractive series on several levels and one that knows how to continue the successes of the first season in these five new episodes.
It handles the photography very well, and – without losing the fantastic “touch” – knows how to give us a good, entertaining thriller so...

A Washington state software engineer stole more than 300,000 from the company he worked for in a scheme inspired by the film “Office Space.”
Ermenildo “Ernie” Castro was charged last week with first-degree theft and first-degree identity theft for manipulating programming code, allowing him to change prices and steal shipping fees charged to customers of the e-commerce company Zulily.
Police discovered a file on his work computer titled “Office Space Project” that laid out the scheme. According to court documents, he later admitted to drawing inspiration from the film.
Castro launched the scheme in February 2022 by installing “three types of malicious code in the checkout process,” police detectives stated. He made further modifications in March and April once other employees picked up on discrepancies between the amount customers were billed and charges to their credit cards. Over a five-month period, Castro interfered with more than 30,000 transactions.
