Ben was raised by the pre-CGI fantasy movies of Ray Harryhausen;
Voyages of Sinbad, One Million Years BC, The Valley of the Gwangi...you
get the idea. Becoming a big dinosaur fan led the pursuit of stop
motion animation and CG compositing effects. After gaining a 1st class
Degree in animation he moved to the Mecca of animation - Bristol UK.
Here he met his future business partner, co director and good buddy
Chris Hopewell. Collision Films was born.
Collision leapt headfirst into the music promo's and 7 years of nonstop energy, hard graft and imagination. Kicking off with the world renown and MTV award winning promo "There,there" for Radiohead, a stream of high profile acts followed; including Elbow, Franz Ferdinand, Mark Lannegan, Scissor Sisters, The Bees, The Killers, McFly and many more. If you wanted something bold and out of the ordinary then Collision had a treatment for you.
The next chapter in our story takes Collision beyond the Bristol based studios, into the U.S. commercial world bringing new opportunities, bigger toys and a whole new area of production to flex their gung-ho approach to the moving image - shooting in L.A., New York, Las Vegas and Cairo. A good example of the Collision directors in their element is the co-directed Honda Acura "Wall Art" commercial in which the impossible became the ludicrous when Ben & Chris were called in to create an animated, hand painted cityscape frame by frame across a 100 ft wall. Weeks after completion the 30 second spot was broadcast during the Super-bowl and the sheer scale of in camera animation has yet to be bettered by any other commercial.
But alas it was only a matter of time until Collision had served its purpose for our the directors who were now fully inducted into the wacky world of film and video production.
Last year saw Ben supervising & directing visual effects for the BBC's children's adventure show "Andy's Wild Adventures". Ben also designed, directed and animated a set of silhouette paper puppet sequences for the multi award winning HBO feature documentary "Marathon Boy". Most recently Ben supervised the VFX for Universal's recent black comedy feature, "A Fantastic Fear of Everything" starring Simon Pegg.
When not solving crimes and protecting the innocent, Ben can be found working on scripts for TV and the big screen, and is available for directing & designing for cool, imaginative, spectacular, emotional, beautiful, fun, monstrous, difficult projects.
