Michal Rataj composer, performer, radio producer.
Michal Rataj (born 1975) studied musicology at the Charles University in Prague and composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (with prof. Ivan Kurz and prof. Milan Slavicky), where he earned his Ph.D. in 2005 in the field of electro-acoustic music and radio art. Since 2006 he is assistant professor and runs electro.acoustic music theory and composition classes there.
Michal Rataj was awarded scholarships to study musicology and composition at Royal Holloway University of London, Egham, UK (1995), Humboldt Universitaet zu Berlin (1998) and Universitaet der Kuenste in Berlin (2002). In 2007 he was awarded a Fulbright Grant to guide a research in the field of electro-acoustic music and real-time sound applications at CNMAT, University of California Berkeley, CA.
Michal Rataj also works as radio art producer in the Czech Radio, Prague where he curates program slot Radioatelier and website rAdioCUSTICA for contemporary radio art activities. Since 2012 he has been vice-chair of the EBU Ars Acustica producers group.
Michal Rataj composes mainly electro-acoustic and chamber or orchestral instrumental music and receives performances throughout Europe and the USA and broadcasts worldwide. Recently he has been active as real-time performer of his acousmatic music and he gives sound performances alone or with different music partners. Since 2004 he has composed larger number of sound tracks for cinema productions and TV as well as considerable amount of music for radio art productions.
Rataj gives lectures on electro-acoustic and contemporary music and radio art. Since 2002 he has taught eventually at the NYU in Prague and in 2010 he co-organized new electro-acoustic music composition class within the Music Program there.
