Although The Djinn beat it to release in the US by a few months, The Boy Behind the Door is writer/director David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s first feature. Unlike that film, this has a plot rooted in the all too real horrors of child abductions and human trafficking. And it’s all the more shocking and disturbing for it.
The film opens with Bobby and Kevin (Ezra Dewey; The Djinn) in the trunk of a car. A brief flashback shows their violent abduction from a park. Back in the present Kevin is taken from the trunk by the unseen and unnamed Creep. Left alone Bobby manages to escape the car’s trunk, only to find himself in the middle of nowhere.
Before he can make an escape he hears Kevin screaming inside the house.

‘The Boy Behind the Door’: Exclusive Clip Offers Levity in Intense, Boundary Pushing Horror-Thriller
One of last year’s best horror movies is Justin Powell and David Charbonier’s thrilling indie horror The Boy Behind the Door, an unrelentingly intense boundary-pushing thriller (our review). Writer/directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell follow up their tale of the all too real horrors of human trafficking, The Boy Behind the Door, with another tale of a young boy forced to fight for his life. In The Djinn the threat is a supernatural one.
After the death of his mother (Tevy Poe; Redwood Massacre: Annihilation) Dylan a mute twelve year old and his radio DJ father Michael relocate to a new home. One that, in true horror movie fashion, the previous occupant died in.
While looking around his new home he, again in keeping with genre traditions, finds a copy of The Book of Shadows which contains a spell to conjure a Djinn (John Erickson) that will grant him his fondest wish, to be able to speak. The...

David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s horror about a mute boy who wishes for a voice is let down by its weak script and CGI
David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s debut The Boy Behind the Door was a well-executed abduction horror scored through with both tenderness and an uncommon cruel streak. Their follow-up, The Djinn, stars one of that film’s lead actors, Ezra Dewey, and locks him once again into the same kids-in-confinement genre. Despite light 80s stylings on the soundtrack, this is unfortunately a much weaker effort that both lacks internal logic and struggles for inspiration.
Dewey plays Dylan, a mute boy living with single father Michael (Rob Brownstein), who believes his disability has caused his mother’s absence from their life. So one night, when Michael is out doing his radio DJ gig, Dylan – who earlier found occultist tome the Book of Shadows at the back...

You can’t fault the writing-directing duo of David Charbonier and Justin Powell for reckless overreaching: Their first feature, “The Djinn”, stirred terror around just one boy in an apartment. Their second, which premiered at Fantastic Fest last fall, cautiously ups the ante to two boys and one whole house. “The Boy Behind the Door” is a more polished affair than its predecessor, with no supernatural aspect to the child endangerment this time. But . Shudder is adding the film to its streaming service July 29.
After a brief, alarming prologue, we properly meet our protagonists in a moment of calm beforehand — two 12-year-old lads playing catch in a field en route to a Little League game. When their ball rolls down an embankment, Kevin goes to retrieve it but does not return. Bobby (Lonnie Chavis from “This Is Us”) eventually goes looking for him, which doesn’t end well for him either.

After tweens Bobby and Kevin are kidnapped on their way back from baseball practice, what follows is just about on the right side of palatable
Here is an example of a rare phenomenon: a film in which children are the heroes that is not a children’s film on any level. In fact, David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s tightly confined and well-marshalled slasher-thriller walks a fine line: not only does it subject its two tween leads to multiple “scenes of threat”, but – and this is genuinely unusual – it shows tangible bodily harm being inflicted on them with enough frequency to make this a rather dismaying watch. Its best-friends-for-ever message is barely enough to keep the film on the right side of palatable.

Have you ever watched those television programmes in which adults try to solve puzzles and obstacle courses and wonder what the inept contestants did in childhood? For a lot of kids, such activities are part of a normal day's activities. They're constantly learning so they have to stay sharp and keep making an effort when something seems impossible. They keep encountering unfamiliar situations so they have to be brave. Running, jumping, climbing, crawling, sneaking - all these things are part of games. Adult predators see children as easy targets because they're small and naïve, but sometimes, David Charbonier and Justin Powell's film suggests, they're going to get a surprise.
We meet Bobby (Lonnie Chavis) and Kevin (Ezra Dewey) in one of those golden-lit meadows that are a mainstay of cinematic childhood memories. They run and laugh, playing with a cricket ball, and sit together, swinging their feet, vowing to be.

Young Bobby and his best friend, Kevin, are abducted on their way to their baseball game. When Bobby breaks out of the trunk of the car he's trapped in he sees that they've been taken to a home in the middle of nowhere, just rolling hills and pumpjacks as far as the eye can see. Unwilling to leave his best friend behind Bobby enters the house and tries to find Kevin without being caught by their kidnapper. The arrival of a second stranger only adds to the urgency of the moment. The Boy Behind the Door is all about the primarily silent tension and the game of cat-and-mouse that happens between Bobby and the strangers. Directors and writers, David Charbonier and Justin Powell, go...

Shudder released the trailer for this horror flick yesterday and while we're a day late it's still worth checking out. In The Boy Behind the Door, a night of unimaginable terror awaits twelve-year-old Bobby (Lonnie Chavis) and his best friend, Kevin (Ezra Dewey), when they are abducted on their way home from school. Managing to escape his confines, Bobby navigates the dark halls, praying his presence goes unnoticed as he avoids his captor at every turn. "I'm scared, Bobby." "Me too, okay, but I'm not going to leave you." Shudder has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Boy Behind the Door, which first premiered at both Fantastic Fest and AFI Fest last year in the fall. This is the second film from horror filmmakers David Charbonier & Justin Powell – they actually made this before making The Djinn, but The Djinn ended up being released before this one. In The Boy Behind the Door, a night of unimaginable terror awaits twelve-year-old Bobby and his best friend, Kevin, when they are abducted on their way home from school. They eventually manage to escape their confines, and embark upon a rescue mission to find save other and get the hell out of there. Hey everyone! As I mentioned the other day, I’ve been playing catch-up on a handful of indie horror reviews recently, and today, I’m back with two more reviews—The Djinn from directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell and the hilarious mockumentary 15 Things You Didn’t Know About Bigfoot (#1 Will Blow Your Mind!) by Zach Lamplugh, which are both currently streaming everywhere.
The Djinn: As someone who very much enjoyed their efforts on The Boy Behind the Door (which played at Fantastic Fest last September), I was excited to see what the filmmaking duo of Justin Powell and David Charbonier was going to do for their disturbing modern fairytale, The Djinn, and they did not disappoint. What they have managed to create doesn’t quite hit the same storytelling highs as The Boy Behind the Door, but I love how they manage to make the most of their...

Though the country might be inching towards normalcy, the specialty box office has yet to make steps towards a total recovery. This weekend we failed to see a single film break a 100K gross.
Opening at 41 screens this week was IFC Midnight horror flick The Djinn. Co-directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell, the film follows a mute twelve-year-old, Dylan Jacobs, as he discovers a mysterious book of spells inside his new apartment. Grieving the loss of his mother, and feeling isolated from everyone except for his father, Dylan performs a ritual that promises to deliver his heart’s desire: to have a voice.
Garnering an 88% on Rt, Djinn’s premiere saw a promising $1004 per screen average and brought home over 40 grand. Few films have been able to break this mark in the limited-release space during the pandemic.
Neon debuted marriage drama The Killing of Two Lovers this week.

Woe betide the grade-school-age lad who finds himself in a movie by writing-directing duo David Charbonier and Justin Powell: He may survive their plotlines, but it won’t be pretty. Their official first feature, “The Boy Behind the Door” (which will debut on streaming platform Shudder July 29) found two such kids fighting for their lives after being abducted by a stranger. In the new, more supernaturally tilted “The Djinn,” they’ve crafted another effective suspense exercise from the same basic premise, trapping a juvenile protagonist in a home with a malevolent nemesis.

What is done cannot be undone.
In the most famous text on djinn, al-Tabasi's Shamil, there are two ways to approach their invocation in sorcery. One is with pure intent, in the path of God. The other is with self-interest, contrary to God's plan. It's not always as easy to distinguish the two as you might think. That's why it's vital for anyone engaging with magic to have a good understanding of themselves - and if they don't have that when they begin, they'd better figure it out quickly.
David Charbonier and Justin Powell's film doesn't do much explaining of matters like this. There is only one scene involving heavy exposition, and that's simply a discovery of rules, intended to startle and (at least briefly) overwhelm. As directors, they're more interested in showing than in telling. What they do show requires a bit of education if it is to be fully.

There’s a reason young, mute Dylan Jacobs (Ezra Dewey) longs for a voice and it’s not simply an ableist fantasy striving for some misguided ideal of “normalcy.” A bit of that is present, but the reality is that he sees his silence as the reason why his mother (Tevy Poe) left. He’s starting over in a new apartment with his radio DJ father (Rob Brownstein’s Michael) and yet he still can’t forget the night he awoke to find her crying in their kitchen. His dreams are haunted by her depression and his waking hours are spent wondering about his contribution to its formation. The discovery of an occult book promising him a wish is therefore too intriguing to ignore.
In familiar “Monkey’s Paw” fashion, however, writers/directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell aren’t seeking to grant it without a price. So rather than a genie,...

In The Boy Behind the Door, a gripping twist on the home-invasion thriller, first-time feature directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell plunge two tween boys into escalating peril, relentlessly intensifying a cascading series of lethal threats over the film’s excruciating runtime.
By subjecting their two young protagonists to increasingly horrifying hazards that include random abduction and violent sexual assault, the filmmakers induce a very specific type of tension that’s both alarming and profoundly unsettling. It’s a delicate and memorably successful balancing act that effectively contextualizes some deliberately challenging material.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, an estimated 460,000 children go missing every year in the United States. Kids can disappear in the blink of an eye and are sometimes never found. This past weekend, filmmakers David Charbonier and Justin Powell celebrated the world premiere of their first feature, The Boy Behind the Door, which debuted online as part of the 2020 Fantastic Fest celebration (you can read my review Here). Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Powell and Charbonier about the project, and they discussed the inspiration behind their story for the film, their experiences collaborating with their cast on The Boy Behind the Door, and more.
I would love to hear a little bit about what the initial inspiration was behind this story, in terms of these kids and the things that they have to endure and the friendship that they share. Because obviously, their friendship is really the heart of the story, and a lot of it is hard to watch, but I think ultimately there's a sense of hope because of their connection to each other.

With the virtual edition of Fantastic Fest 2020 still underway, here’s a look at two more films from this year’s programming slate: The Stylist from Jill Gevargizian and The Boy Behind the Door, which was co-written and co-directed by Justin Powell and David Charbonier.
The Stylist: I was a fan of Jill Gevargizian’s short film The Stylist when it was making the rounds a few years back, so to see her finally have the opportunity to expand upon the initial concept from the short for her feature-length film debut, also entitled The Stylist, is pretty damn great, and I was left absolutely floored by the results. When people talk in the future about filmmakers who took the world by storm with their first movie during this era in horror, I guarantee that Gevargizian and The Stylist will undoubtedly be a part of that conversation for years to come.

Nicholas Verso (l) and Samuel Ireland on the ‘Itch’ set (Photo credit: David Dare Parker).
Nicholas Verso has worked with children so often since his 2016 debut feature Boys in the Trees the writer-director says it’s a blessing whenever an adult appears on set.
Not that he is complaining: Verso has relished nurturing young talent in Matchbox Pictures’ Nowhere Boys, Magpie Pictures’ Grace Beside Me, Aquarius Films’ The Unlisted and the ABC Me-commissioned action-adventure Itch.
However he looks forward to getting into adult territory with horror movie The Ice Cream Man, The Lairdbalor adapted from Kathleen Kaufman’s dark fantasy novel, and psychological thriller Sleep to Dream.
