Music is at the core of two new Specialty features making their theatrical bows this weekend, albeit from rather different ends of the spectrum. XLrator Media will open Jimi: All Is By My Side focusing on the artist’s life in London in nearly three dozen theaters, while Samuel Goldwyn Films will bow faith-centered The Song in over 300 theaters, the biggest number of runs for a limited release newcomer this week. Magnolia Pictures will take thriller The Two Faces Of January starring Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst and Oscar Isaac to an initial half-dozen locations in the wake of its VOD release late last month and CBS Films is targeting the same number of runs for its Cannes ’14 feature Pride. Factory 25 is opening its art meets goth-rap thriller Hellaware and Cinema Libre will debut a former Swiss foreign-language Oscar contender The Little Bedroom in exclusive New York runs. The weekend is...

It’s been a long time coming, but the big screen biopic of Jimi Hendrix is now just months away and we have the first trailer for you right here. The movie is directed by 12 Years a Slave writer John Ridley, and André Benjamin (best known for being one half of OutKast) plays the legendary musician.
How well All Is By My Side is able to tell Hendrix’s story when his estate wouldn’t actually allow the use of his music in the film remains to be seen, although the film was mostly well received by critics when it was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year.
In the trailer which can be viewed in the player below, Benjamin does seem to be doing a pretty solid job of playing Hendrix, although the focus is very much on manager Chas Changer and those around him as...

There are a number of films covering different periods in the life of guitar slinger Jimi Hendrix in development. After playing various festivals, Jimi: All Is By My Side is the first to actually take aim at cinemas.Written and directed by 12 Years A Slave scribe John Ridley, and featuring Outkast’s Andre 3000 (here credited as Andre Benjamin), it’s an account of his pre-fame days, of time spent in London, the people he meets and his tangles with the law. It’s also lacking any of his famous music, which seems odd for a film about a man who had such an impact on the art. But without the expensive, closely-held rights to his work, the pre-fame era is what Ridley focused on.With Imogen Poots and Hayley Atwell as two of the women who had an influence on his life at the time, All Is By My Side also features Burn Gorman,...

New Vampire Academy movie delivered pretty good action, drama & more. The Weinstein Company released their new action/science fiction flick, "Vampire Academy " into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and thought it was pretty entertaining. I really like Zoey Deutch as an actress. She's pretty funny and sexy as hell. The movie delivered plenty of comedy, drama, and some pretty good action scenes. However, i felt the plot as whole, to just be ok. It stars: Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danila Kozlovsky, Gabriel Byrne, Sarah Hyland, Joely Richardson, Cameron Monaghan, Sami Gayle, Claire Foy, and Ashley Charles. The movie revolves around characters, Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) and Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry). They are two 17-year-old girls who attend a hidden boarding school for Moroi (mortal, peaceful Vampires) and Dhampirs (half-vampire/half-human guardians). Rose is a rebellious Guardian-in-training and her best friend, Lissa, is a royal vampire Princess. They've...

In the upcoming film Vampire Academy (based upon the series of bestselling books by Richelle Mead), Zoey Deutch plays heroine Rose Hathaway. She’s a Dhampir, half human/half vampire, and a guardian of her Moroi best friend, Lissa (Lucy Fry).
Dread Central sat down with Zoey last week, and she told us all about the new movie.
Dread Central: What do you like about this character [Rose Hathaway]?
Zoey Deutch: Oh my gosh. How many times have I answered that question? What did I like about this character... I liked that Rose Hathaway is passionately curious, she's strong-willed, she's loyal to her best friend, she's a fighter - literally and physically - and to me, what I love most about her is her sense of humor and that she uses it as a means of survival and as a defense mechanism. I loved that about her.

Sh: It was so much fun! I loved it! I thought that because it's so different from anything that I've ever done. You know when you play someone like Hayley, her standards are a lot higher than Natalie's so I'm always worried like do I have dark circles? Is my hair okay? Do I look pale? not to mention a vampiric battle of the ages. Dread Central sat down with Dom last week, and he told us all about it.
Dread Central: Pretty much this whole film takes place on campus. So, we've gotta ask: What was your high school experience like?
Dominic Sherwood: We call it secondary school. It actually wasn't too bad, the only thing I really struggled with was, we didn't have an acting department, we didn't have a drama department so I couldn't study that from 11-16, it wasn't an option to us and it wasn't available. In fact, obviously because of that when I told people I wanted to be an actor, they were like, 'You should probably do something in,...

In the upcoming film Vampire Academy (based upon the series of bestselling books by Richelle Mead), Lucy Fry plays Lissa Dragomir. Lissa is a Moroi, which are peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world...
But not everyone wants to see Lissa’s life remain peaceful and discrete. Dread Central sat down with Lucy last week, and she told us all about the new movie.
Dread Central: How was working with Zoey? Did you guys become friends and did you do anything off set?
Lucy Fry: Yeah, we did. Actually, one of the really fun things is that Zoey's really into fashion and she took me shopping. It was the first time that I'd sort of gone shopping with a girl for fun! I know, it's weird; in America you kind of grow up and it's a thing that you do and I grew up not really doing that.

Check out the first clip from Mark Waters’ “Vampire Academy”, the latest stab at Ya book-to-movie glory. I dunno if this one will work, since these Ya movies seem to be a major crapshoot these days. Still, it looks pretty good, in a “Mean Girls”/”Heathers” sort of way. But is the target audience looking for something like that? I dunno. The fact that I find it to be kind of interesting probably speaks volumes, because I’m obviously not the moviegoers this movie is aimed at. Anyways, check out the first clip from “Vampire Academy”. Apparently the heroine is a tough chick. I dig it. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. Starring Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danila Kozlovsky, Gabriel Byrne, Sarah Hyland,...
