After collaborating on Patrik-Ian Polk's Blackbird, Isaiah Washington and Mo’Nique will pair up again, to star in another indie drama by another black filmmaker, Choice Skinner, titled We Are Family. You have to appreciate Washington's motivations over the last couple of years or so, attaching himself to smaller, what would be deemed *riskier* independent movies, written and directed by black filmmakers (mostly) who, otherwise, may not have access to an actor of his abilities and name recognition - from Russ Parr to Tony Abulu, to Matthew Cherry, Patrik-Ian Polk, and now Choice Skinner. I saw the film at the African Diaspora International Film Festival in November, where it was the opening night film; and while I didn't love it, I appreciated the effort. Read my thoughts Here. In what is said to be an unprecendented theatrical release for a Nollywood film, Doctor Bello will open in for a 1-week run, (February 22 - 27) at AMC theaters in NYC, NJ, Philly, B-more, DC, Atl, Charlotte, Houston, Dallas, Miami, Jacksonville, Columbus (Ohio), Chi-town, Detroit and La. Of course, as is often the case, if the film performs well during that first week, it'll continue to play for another week, and so on... Directed by Tony Abulu's, the...

Nigerian filmmaker Tony Abulu's Doctor Bello, which stars Isaiah Washington, Vivica A. Fox, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Bern Cohen, Genevieve Nnaji, and Stephanie Okereke, is the first movie project financed in part by the recently established Nigerian Intervention Fund for the arts and entertainment industry, administered by Nexim Bank. The money is part of the N200 billion (or about $1.2 billion) intervention fund set up by the Nigerian Federal Government to bail out the manufacturing sector from crisis. Thus far, a reported 7 projects have received money from the fun, which some say is too low, given how much of a boost...

If you can get past the occasional sound issues, and side chatter from the panelists, it's an otherwise worth-listening-to conversation, if you're interested in continuing to educate yourselves about Nollywood - Nigeria's film industry - especially from those who are on the frontlines. Skip over the first 5 minutes or so; they spend those initial early minutes getting situated. Watch the hour-long conversation below, which includes contributions from notable Nollywood director/producer Tony Abulu & one of Nollywood's star actresses, Stephanie Okereke Linus.
