July Jung made one of the best recent debuts of recent times in Korean cinema back in 2014 with her “A Girl at My Door”, a gritty and superbly acted social drama which screened in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes Film Festival. It went on to receive much critical acclaim and multiple awards at film festivals, with both the director and lead actress Bae Doona receiving praise and accolades for their work. Jung instantly became a director to watch out for but little did we know that it would take eight years before she would step behind the camera again for “Next Sohee”, which closed the International Critics' Week at Cannes this year.

Good things come to those who wait, and so it is with Next Sohee, the blunt and powerful new film from director July Jung, which bowed at the Cannes Film Festival this spring, following eight years after her sensational debut, A Girl at My Door. Teaming up once more with actress Bae Doona, Jung sets her sights on the systems and circumstances that contribute to workplace abuse, specifically young students who are taken advantage of by shady 'externship' programs. Bad things, meanwhile, come in threes. High school student Sohee -- a splendid Kim Si-eun in her first major role -- is initially thrilled to be drafted into her school's 'externship' program, which places her in a job in a call center where she can earn...

The closing film of the festival, it’s a blistering exploration of the exploitation of school children through work experience programmes, presented as a drama in two parts. Since seeing the film, I have spoken to people in several countries who have told me that the same kind of exploitation happens where they are, so I ask her how she first came across the issue.

Jung instantly became a director to watch out for but little did we know that it would take eight years before she would step behind the camera again for “Next Sohee”, which closed the International Critics’ Week at Cannes this year.

It was a good day to be bad at Fantasia, as the Cheval Noir Award went to Karim Ouelhaj’s “Megalomaniac,” loosely inspired by the horrifying true story of the “Butcher of Mons.” The Belgian serial killer is believed to have murdered at least five women in the 1990s. He was never captured and his identity was never revealed.
The jury of the event’s 26th edition, including Charles Bramesco, Elza Kephart, Maitland McDonagh and Heather O’Neill, presided over by C. Robert Cargill, fell for its unapologetic darkness, calling “Megalomaniac” “the very sort of film that festivals exist to share.”
“[It’s] an astonishing, brutal piece of art that challenges the audience while simultaneously saying something deeply profound. It is a lush piece of cinema whose intent is to disturb and it succeeds at every turn,” they stated, also awarding Eline Schumacher for her committed performance as the killer’s daughter Martha,...

It is "an astonishing, brutal piece of art that challenges the audience while simultaneously saying something deeply profound," said the jury in presenting this year's Cheval Noir Best Feature award to Karim Ouelhaj's troubling tale about the offspring of a serial killer, Megalomaniac. The film, also described as "the very sort of film that festivals exist to share," took a second award in the for of an Outstanding Performance nod for star Eline Schumacher, who plays a brutalised young woman who doubts her own capacity for change as she stumbles down a very dark path.

Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival will close its 26th edition with a screening of July Jung’s “Next Sohee,” an interesting take on exploitation starring the Wachowski siblings’ regular collaborator, South Korean actress Bae Doona.
The film, which premiered at Cannes Critics’ Week, won’t be the only title to discover on the closing night, however, with a special screening of A24’s horror comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies” also planned. Directed by Halina Reijn and featuring Amandla Stenberg, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” breakout Maria Bakalova and Pete Davidson, the film shows a party game that leads to murder, all the while maintaining “a taut balance of uneasy tension and wicked humor,” teased the festival organizers.
The announcement came alongside Fantasia’s third wave of titles, finally rounding up this year’s varied selection. Among the world premieres, Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez will bring “The Elderly,” Shuichi Okita “The Fish Tale,...

Filmmakers seeking to denounce the crushing effects of capitalism often seem to rely on the excuse that if their films aren’t subtle, it’s because capitalism itself isn’t either. But such systems of exploitation probably wouldn’t still be around if, on top of having power on their side, the powers that be didn’t perniciously plant their hooks into the minds and hearts of their victims, making them do most of the work for them.

July Jung’s first feature movie revolves around Young-Nam (Bae Doo-na), a policewoman, who is temporally transferred from Seoul to the police station of a small seaside village, habitable mostly by elderly citizens. As soon as she arrives, she confronts schoolgirl Do-hee (Kim Sae-ron), who not only is bullied by her classmates but also she is a victim of abuse by her alcoholic stepfather Yong-ha (Song Sae-byeok). One night, Do-hee runs to Young-nam’s door, searching for protection from her abusive stepfather. Young-Nam, feeling sympathy for the young girl, takes her under her protection until the new school year, despite the demands of Do-hee’s stepfather to return home. Things get complicated when Yong-ha sees Young-Nam kissing her ex-girlfriend and he uses her homosexuality against her.

Key festival programmers quit last month over the succession issue.
South Korea’s Jeonju International Film Festival (Jiff) organizing committee and its chairman Kim Seung-su have appointed producer Lee Joondong the new festival director today (December 11).
Lee’s appointment will last for three editions starting with next year’s event, which runs April 30-May 9.
The country’s film industry was shaken last month when executive programmer Kim Young-jin, who had previously been the successor apparent to former festival director Lee Choong-jik, walked out with his two other core programming colleagues Lee Sangyong and Jang Byungwon over the issue of who would take the director role.

The Un Certain Regard section was where the debut feature, A Girl at My Door (2014) from South Korean director July Jung unspooled to insidious acclaim by those who saw it. Following this auspicious beginning it played London Film Festival twelve months ago and now finally returns to cinemas as the always inventive Peccadillo Pictures release it in cinemas on 18 September. Choice is an imperative that drives the narrative of A Girl at My Door, Young-Nam (played by Doona Bae) is a Seoul Police Commissioner transferred a small provincial backwater (Yeosu) for the dual crimes of being gay and overindulging in alcohol. There she makes a connection with an abused teenager girl (Do-Hee) who is constantly seeking escape from her father.

★★★★☆ July Jung's A Girl at My Door (2014) offers a South Korean domestic abuse psychodrama marked by its slow pace, minimalist framing and unsettling sexual overtones. The link between bigotry and victimhood is quickly established on Young-Nam's (Doona Bae) first day as the police chief of an isolated seaside village: her all-male colleagues casually refer to her as "sexy girl" and she encounters a raggedy girl named Do-Hee (Sae-ron Kim), mud-splattered by passing vehicles as she plays alone on the side of the road. Young-Nam is repeatedly forced to intervene when Do-Hee's irascible drunk of a stepfather Yong-Ha (Sae-byok Sung) and sadistic grandmother beat her and call her a "bitch".

Having been nominated in three separate categories at Cannes Film Festival last year, it’s easy to see why July Jung’s directorial debut has been so well-received, as a nuanced, socially perceptive drama that won’t fail to move and compel its audience, while a breathtaking lead performance from Cloud Atlas’ Doona Bae will ensure you

Following its launch last year, the Wildflower Film Awards Korea revealed the nominees of its upcoming 2nd edition last week. Leading the pack with seven nominees is July Jung's A Girl at My Door, while Han Gong-ju and The King of Jokgu following at five a piece and 10 Minutes, Gyeongju and Hill of Freedom each picking up four. Set up by Korean film critic and festival consultant Darcy Paquet, the Wildflower Film Awards have been praised by industry professionals as a means to recognize the achievements of Korea's thriving independent scene. Despite critical acclaim and success on the international festival circuit, low-budget films have had a tough time at local theaters, due in part to the vertically integrated nature of Korea's studio system. ★★★★☆In July Jung’s impressive directorial debut, produced by critically acclaimed film-maker Lee Chang-dong, a city cop relocated to the sticks befriends a moppet with a crummy home life. Starring Bae Doo-na and Kim Sae-ron, A Girl at My Door (2014) is at once a plangent character study and transgressive drama. For the child at the centre of the narrative exhibits manipulative tendencies of a sociopathic leaning. There’s been a scandal. Only, we don’t quite know what’s gone on. Some might well accuse the writer-director of obfuscation or lacking clarity in the storytelling. However, seen as a bold creative choice, it has thematic weight and a significant bearing on how you read the ending.
