Director Tim Ewalts captures the twisted competitiveness of brotherhood in his latest short Undergrowth (Kreupelhout), a tale of two brothers and their father who live amongst the trees of a foreboding forest. What’s so gripping about Undergrowth is how Ewalts depicts the scaling intensity of the power relations between the two brothers. He often showcases them interacting through slow, creeping frames that display the small gestures and behaviours that build towards their inevitable confrontation. If you’re looking for a tonal comparison, there are definitely similarities with the early work of Robert Eggers in how the atmospheric dread of the surroundings feels like it is gradually encompassing the characters. Dn is excited to present the online premiere of Undergrowth in company with a conversation with Ewalts where he talks through the challenge of balancing his loose, improvisational directorial style with the formal restrictions of shooting 16mm.

Sumerian has acquired the North American rights to brutal coming-of-age story “Mascot,” which had its world premiere in January at Slamdance, and its international premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam the same month.
Sumerian is planning a limited theatrical release this year under the English title “Fortunate Son.” The pickup marks the second acquisition for Sumerian’s new film and streaming division, which launched this year.
Sumerian founder Ash Avildsen said the film is “a dark, brutally authentic and beautifully shot independent film centered around troubled youth in unorthodox households. It will undoubtedly strike a nerve with audiences who appreciate gritty arthouse drama, as it did with me.”
With his radical behavior, teenager Jerry endangers not only himself but his entire family. At first glance, Jerry seems like a normal teenager. He lives with his single mother Abbey and younger sister in a quiet coastal town and helps out...

As sharply engineered as a reel of razor wire, Shariff Korver’s “Do Not Hesitate” is not the first film to expose the sheer lunacy of sending callow, heavily armed young men, versed in a machismo that sees sensitivity as weakness, into hostile territory and expecting everything to work out fine. But Korver sets his film, which is the Dutch international Oscar selection, apart from the “Jarheads” and the “Full Metal Jackets” of the world with the precision of its craft and the narrowness of its focus. This time, the story is told as though through the sights of a sniper rifle.
Directly in the crosshairs, there’s Erik (major breakout Joes Brauers), a personable, level-headed young soldier and avid amateur drummer, who has been deployed to the Middle East on a peacekeeping mission. When their tricked-out transport vehicle stalls on a remote mountain path, Erik and a small squad...

The director’s feature debut, the thriller The Intruder, world-premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014 and starred Nasrdin Dchar in the lead role. That flick revolved around the vicissitudes of a Dutch police officer called Sam, the son of a Moroccan family who is tasked with infiltrating a drug cartel. Korver’s new endeavour, penned in its entirety by Jolein Laarman, stars Joes Brauers, Spencer Bogaert and Tobias Kersloot in the lead roles. In detail, the plot follows three young soldiers who are left to guard a military vehicle by themselves after the sudden disappearance of their superior. As their situation...
