Close on the heels of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving came another holiday-themed slasher movie, as director Erik Bloomquist‘s slasher movie Founders Day received a limited theatrical release in the United States, courtesy of Dark Sky Films, back in January. If you didn’t catch the movie during its run on the big screen, we have a positive update to share with you today: Coming Soon reports that Founders Day has a digital release date of May 7th.

I am of that age that still thinks the 80s was 30 years ago and that the 90s just happened. Strange as that logic is, there’s nothing like movie anniversaries to pull me back into reality. Last episode we looked at In the Mouth of Madness and its impact now going strong 30 years later. That flick though, like most of John Carpenter’s catalogue, was something that was already out when I started my movie journey. I had already seen it on VHS and on TV from time to time which puts it in another category altogether. Move ahead just 5 short years to 1999, one of the greatest years in cinema history, and we start getting that 25 years of existence that puts that nice existential crisis right into my gut. Today we are going to look at one of those movies that probably isn’t considered a traditional horror movie but is absolutely horrific in nature.

Welcome to the digital den of dread, where horror meets headsets in a mind-melting mashup! In the realm of horror movies set in virtual reality, the bizarre becomes the baseline, and the uncanny is commonplace. Imagine strapping on a VR headset, only to find yourself in a world where every turn brings a new terror, and every pixel could be your doom. That’s the twisted reality of VR horror films, a genre that blends the eerie with the electronic in ways you’ve got to see to disbelieve.
From the cybernetic showdowns of Virtuosity to the cerebral labyrinths of eXistenZ, these films are not just about scares; they’re about making you second-guess every digital decision you’ve ever made. Picture this: one minute, you’re a sofa-bound spectator; the next, you’re lost in a labyrinthine VR game fighting for your virtual life, and maybe your real one too.

Earlier this week, we learned that director Erik Bloomquist‘s slasher movie Founders Day has secured a North American distribution deal with Dark Sky Films, and the company is planning to give it a theatrical release sometime in the first quarter of 2024. In preparation for that release, the movie has also now secured a rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Founders Day has been rated R for “strong bloody violence, language, and some sexual references.” So it delivers pretty much what you expect to see from a slasher movie.

Brainscan is one of those movies you would stumble on as a ’90s kid watching HBO, Cinemax or whatever other programming you weren’t supposed to be watching after your parents went to bed. The kind that you could tell right away was something darker than society would deem appropriate for someone of your age. The kind you knew would keep you up that night.
All of which made it impossible to turn off, of course.
But there’s a certain quality to Brainscan that felt still even more under the surface sinister than the other horror flicks I was used to at the time. This might sound silly considering the plot is about a misfit teenager who plays the hottest new horror video game advertised in Fangoria and ends up dealing with an almost cartoonish, mohawked, coulda been a guitar tech for Twisted Sister, Little Monsters type villain who...

After a genre-defining golden age from 1978 to 1984, slashers continued to proliferate cinemas throughout the rest of the ’80s. By the time the ’90s rolled around, however, diminishing returns for franchises and newcomers alike made it seem as though the slasher well had run dry. But, like its bottomless repository of knife-wielding villains, the genre has proven that it can never be stopped. During the dry period before Scream revitalized slashers in 1996, savvy filmmakers began leaning into the campy elements as a response to dwindling audiences rooting for the villains rather than fearing them. Dr. Giggles was just what the doctor ordered.
The 1992 film was a collaboration between Largo Entertainment, who produced the film, and Dark Horse Comics, who developed a short-lived comic book series based on the character. It may not have had the draw of Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, or Freddy Krueger, but its comedic approach to the subgenre...

The longer Scream Factory has been in business, the more high profile and “classic” titles they have released, the more they have begun to dig a little deeper for the kinds of catalogue titles and semi-obscurities for which devoted horror fans have been clamoring for years. New licensing deals have made new titles possible, including three new releases that have been among the most highly requested movies in Scream Factory’s history. As if there was any doubt, the fact that these three films now have special edition Blu-rays are proof positive that we are living in a golden age of home video.
